As a futuristic racing games aficionado, i'd really want to like this game, the controls flow well, physics are nice and flowy except for the instant braking, but devs, you can't just slap a random floating noodle between sparse skyscrapers and call that a track. A track must be memorable, have its own identity and integrate well with the environment with defined landmarks and references, something like "This is the part where it goes inside the dark building, the corners are tighter in here". It gives you the idea i hope. i'd accept fewer racetracks if they at least had soul which is something that has been lost long ago in current futuristic racing games.
Probably the most comically poor rubberbanding I have seen in a racing game in a LONG time. Pros: Delivers on the wipeout controls. Cons: Idiotic rubberbanding and whatever the hell "Oto-pilot" is (IYKYK). Refunding.
This is one of the nicest AG racers out there, in a genre that's been dominated (and rightfully so) by games like Redout II, Pacer and Ballistic NG (this last one if you're into retro visuals). (and yes: this game is on team Wipeout, as opposed to team F-Zero, i.e. expect aircraft physics and don't expect the ship to feel stuck to the ground). These games live or die by their handling and physics, and this one sure delivers. Collisions with the scenery of with other ships are fair, too, even though there will moments a projectile or an aggressive opponent will have you ram against the wall, and you will curse, but that's part of the fun. Visually, the game looks fantastic through and through, each track is perfectly stylized. I could list a ton of details, but I'll just give one example that struck me as I was playing the Solar Avenue track and, when getting into the cave, discovering the neon lighting for the first time and going "woow this looks awesome". There's many effects, like reflections via mirror-like barriers, or water. Track design is great, with all the rollercoaster elements you can think of, you'll be going sideways and upside down more than once, and the scenery will make sure to remind you as it zooms by upside down. I also love that the tracks are long and allow you to catch up if you make a mistake (or lose any hope of winning if you're still not good enough - and you will have to get used to the controls, they are fair and easy to grasp, but hard to master - a staple of the best examples of the genre. Combat-wise you'll have the typical pickups but also original ones, like a computer virus which covers your ship in germs and heavily pixelates the whole screen for a few seconds - nice! The turbo system is "rhythm-based" in that the gauge depletes when you press the boost button, and fills up when you release it, so it's something you have to constantly keep in mind. On top of the basic principle, track elevation will add an extra layer of strategy for your boos, as your ship slows down in uphill slopes, and you'll be well advised to have boost handy at these points. I would compare Millennium Runners to Ballistic NG in terms of speed, handling, controls, combat and overall fun, but while BNG made a conscious decision to go for (updated) early Wipeout visuals, this one is just gorgeous and up there with top-tier AG racers, such as Wipeout Omega Collection or Redout. Something else I liked is that you have many unlockable tracks and ships, but you get a large enough selection from the get-go in order to experiment a little. Also, ships have 3 levels, and level 2 is unlocked, so you can experience higher speeds. In terms of performance, the game runs beautifully, and features graphical options that should guarantee a nice experience on most PCs. At this point, the game can only be great when fully released. It is already great. There is one thing I noticed that still need to be addressed: the sound cues for pickups sometimes don't play. There is currently no career mode, but I would bet this is something these guys are working on - updates are frequent and the last one updated so many things already, and added new tracks too. It seems pretty obvious there's a lot more to come. If it wasn't clear: if you're an AG racer fan: do NOT miss this one and support the developers. The amount of love put in deserves it.
I'm going to start this review off by saying that if you like AG racers, this game can definitely use your support. TL;DR Pros: Vibrant and pleasing graphics Sense of speed is great Ship handling is good Almost no bugs Cons: No real tutorial (that I can see) Below average sound design No difficulty settings, so you better be good Millennium Runners is like raw cookie dough. Its nice but I hope it gets more time to bake. It has a lot of potential that doesn't seem to be realized as of now. I'm hoping the developers don't get let down by the little attention this game is getting, because it is a very nice game. At a time where most games release in early access, having a game that is actually a full, even though small, release is very nice - the only bug I encountered in my half hour of play is the minimap not showing the track layout. The ships handle well and the graphics are pleasing and vibrant. The HUD is easy to follow and looks very nice without being too much. I think it fits into the game perfectly. The soundtrack is good, but sometimes feels like it could be faster/more full as sometimes it feels very basic. What bothers me most about the game in its current state is the sound design. I am hoping that the developers take a look at this because sounds design can make or break a game. The maps I've played on have no ambient sound. There is no sound for flying by objects insanely fast. The ship you drive has a whirring engine noise that gets a little annoying since you are almost always at full throttle. Again, the sound design is enough, but I've also been spoiled by other small developers giving me good sound design. Just a little bit of extra sound could make me feel so much more immersed in the world of the game. Also, the actual controller bindings do not match the image that tells you the controller bindings. I'm not sure why. Aside from that, I like this game and I hope it succeeds. It is a small game after all, and for $10 its well worth a shot.
You have to improve graphics settings: only 3 presets I can choose but PC is not a console. Everyone should be free to create his own experience
Love the game. It's closer to Redout than Wipeout, I would also like a cockpit view available. Career mode is very difficult, but arcade mode is more manageable. Some of the tracks take 3 to 5 minutes to go round, so total race time is sometimes 10 to 15 minutes, Which is great. Yes, I have had the issues with crashing, But I'm using an i5 14600, which is about 5% less powerful than the recommended minimum CPU. However, by changing the graphics preset to medium, this problem seems to be resolved, and the game still looks great. The game is very good value for money. I'm looking forward to more content in future updates. Grazie Mille, To everyone at Commodore for a fantastic game.
Horrendous performance on Ultra, High was better. Didnt like the control system, you have to hold down A and boost with X, and steer and shift left or right, auto throttle was an improvement. 2nd race was too long with over 6 minute laps, didnt see anyone and pointless power ups as there was no one to shoot. Game crashed during the live stream. Needs serious, serious work and I think I will stick with Wipeout.
Ottimo lavoro ragazzi!
