Militia 2 is a cool single player turn based abstract strategy game. It plays most like a kind of souped-up single player chess with a lot of extra mechanisms and unit types. Each turn you move your militia and try to knock out the bad guys; you have 3 "floors" you need to clear of captain units (marked with a star but otherwise much the same as regular units) within a turn limit in order to win a match. The monsters and assorted creeps you're up against either have to delay you enough so you run out of time, or eat all of your 3 brave militia men to defeat you. If you win, you rank up, and the game gets harder! Lose a couple of matches in a row and you rank down. There are two "worlds" with their own rankings and sets of pieces, an unranked practice mode for your rank anxiety, a weekly challenge where the goal is to clear as many floors as you can, and a timed mode which prevents you cogitating for hours on one move. All of this is tracked in high score lists so you can despair at how stupid you are. There's a wide variety of different pieces, all of which interact in interesting ways, leaving a lot of room for creativity. You've got spiked balls you can shove across the board, wiping everything in their path; you have the knights from Chess; you can nudge enemies off the board or onto pools of water; you've got units that wrap around, that can swap piece positions, shoot beams and teleport across the board - there's a lot going on here! One of the game's greatest strengths is how it consistently manages to produce surprising and fun interactions from these components. There's also a marked puzzle game feel, especially as the difficulty increases; as the number of foes go up, so the number of safe solutions go down, and the more you'll have to come up with some creative combo to escape intact. At low levels you can basically play the game on autopilot, but as the difficulty increases you start having to look at the board and think a lot more. Like chess, there's a significant element of looking a few moves ahead here. Boards are randomised each match, so no two games are alike - you will have different units on your side, different units on the enemy side, and all the positions on the board are randomised. This leads to some variation in how challenging the matches are, regardless of the rank you are at. It may be the case that at high ranks some boards will be unwinnable. Most importantly though, the game is fun. If you like puzzle, tactics or strategy games (particularly abstract ones) you should definitely pick this up!

Just like Militia 1, no control over difficulty. Make a few mistakes and you have to replay levels to get back to where you were. Waste of time.
I just started getting into this second Militia and already enjoy it as much as the first. it seems to add a little more variety in how you can clear a level and progress. Like the first one it's a journey of discovery finding out to best use your units, and that's an aspect I enjoy. I'm looking forward to experiencing this more!
9/10 as it makes me guilty in not completing the first game... Here it goes!
A very chill puzzle game, no brain melting and has open solutions. The UI could be improved a lot, by being able to see friendly movement by hoovering the units. Also clicking another friendly unit should cancel the previous one. Considering that I wont get much more than two hours of fun from the game, the price is a bit high.
Like playing chess with a crack team of commandos.
This is a highly polished and interesting puzzle/tactics game. I recommend anyone who enjoys Chess, Into The Breach, or Hoplite to give this one a try. I very much doubt you will be disappointed. The graphics are clean and easy to understand and the UI is nice too. I've played a lot of these kinds of games and this is one of the best.
