About
Midnight Snack is a short and surreal first-person horror game where you wander through an eerie forest using the dials of a microwave.
Alternative and experimental control scheme.
Retro/Pixelart 3D visuals.
Short and sweet, the game takes about 30 minutes to complete.
The controls are integrated into the interface itself, modeled after the dials of a conventional microwave. The bottom dial controls the camera direction, while the top dial determines how long the player moves. Once the time has been set, the controls are locked until the top dial stops turning, so be careful.
To interact with the dials, only the mouse is required.
The player must use these unconventional controls to navigate a strange environment in search of a snack, avoiding various obstacles.
The game takes place in the protagonist's recurring nightmare.
In this nightmare, the protagonist wakes up hungry in the middle of the night, viewing the world from the perspective of a microwave.
Before reaching the kitchen, he must navigate through a dark and eerie setting, even being attacked within the dream manifestations of his guilt.
Finally, upon reaching the kitchen and opening the microwave on the table, he will find an unpleasant surprise.

positive critical· bar length = how often the theme comes up
a bit janky but it's definitely an interesting and original mechanic
Very unique controls. I am glad this is short as using the dials to walk for hours would begin to annoy me. I wouldn't mind if it was slightly longer though. Getting chased with these unique controls was interesting and stressful haha. Don't get stuck while trying to escape :) My Playthrough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvURxT6Z_uo&t=194s
Very short experience, but its a good experiment on alternative control styles. The dial controlling method made it feel very much like a game that was played in the early 2000s/late 90s, and it worked well for the encounter. The game does a good job of guiding you towards using the controls properly, and the short duration of the game prevents the mechanic from becoming tedious and allows it to retain its novelty. Really solid experience for a free game, honestly better made than a lot of games that are not free. The sounds of the dial turning combined with footsteps makes for good tension building, and as said prior the length of this game prevents certain aspects, this included, from becoming annoying. This could make for an interesting mechanic in a longer game, but as an experimentation piece this is very good. The atmosphere is very reminiscent of Halloween specials that would run on certain channels like Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon. Its nostalgic and cozy while still retaining its spookiness.
2/10 - When i charged full time and hit a tree and something is chasing me is not cool
Midnight Snack is a really strange little horror game, and I liked how quickly it made me question what was actually happening. I wake up hungry in the middle of the night, but instead of seeing the world normally, I experience everything from the perspective of a microwave. The idea sounds ridiculous at first, but the surreal presentation makes it surprisingly unsettling. The most interesting part is the control system. Rather than using normal keyboard movement, I control the microwave dials with my mouse. One dial controls which direction I look, while the other determines how long I move before the controls lock again. I found this awkward at first, but that awkwardness is clearly intentional. Having to plan my movement before committing to it creates a strange sense of tension. The forest exploration is fairly simple, with obstacles and unsettling events getting in the way of my search for a snack. I enjoyed how the unusual controls make even basic movement feel like something I have to think about. I cannot just spin around and react instantly, so I have to consider where I want to go and how long I want to keep moving. That makes the journey more memorable than a normal walking simulator would be. The atmosphere is easily the strongest part of the game. The dark forest, retro pixel art and strange dream logic create an uncomfortable feeling without needing complicated graphics. The story takes place inside a recurring nightmare, and the things attacking me are connected to the protagonist's guilt. I liked that the horror gradually becomes more surreal as I get closer to the kitchen, making the simple goal of finding food feel increasingly wrong. My biggest issue is the short length. Midnight Snack is designed as a quick experience, so there is not much room for deeper gameplay or a complicated story. Once I understand the control gimmick and see where the nightmare is going, most of the mystery disappears. The movement system can also be frustrating when I make a mistake, although that is partly what gives the game its unusual identity. Still, I think the experimental design works really well for such a small horror game. The microwave controls are not just a gimmick added on top of ordinary gameplay. They directly affect how I experience the environment, and they make the protagonist's bizarre perspective feel much more convincing. I also liked how the game mixes humor and discomfort without completely ruining the atmosphere. Overall, Midnight Snack is a clever and memorable short horror experience with a genuinely unusual control system. I enjoyed the surreal story, unsettling forest and retro presentation, while the microwave interface gives the game a personality of its own. It is too short to offer much depth, but I think its strange central idea and atmosphere make it well worth playing. Rating: 7.3/10
