Cool soundtrack and interesting gameplay, but with major balancing flaws and cheap shots that come from low price. An elderly bearded rockstar with wings and a missing arm glides through space. But as he touches the guitar, his arms and power return, and he embarks on a tour of the galaxy. There’s no story; you simply go from planet to planet and destroy everything in front of you. The majority of the excitement comes from music and shooting. Metal music plays in the background, and you shred your guitar to match it by holding down the fire button. You can only shoot left or right, and if you hold it too long, your shot will lose range and power. The secret is to tap it while taking extremely short breaks. You should also keep an eye out for the pulse, which delivers additional damage and knocks foes back. This is visible in the line below. Additional mechanic are orbs that show up when you destroy enemies. When you collect them, they will begin to circle around you. This allows you to activate a shield that will also hurt everyone nearby. The number of orbs determines the shield's duration. Then you get a couple power-ups. A bomb destroys everything around you (including unbreakable asteroids), three doves provide temporary invincibility, extra guitar grants additional lives, and another guitar grants double attack. You lose the extra attack when you die, so it is best to play it safe because it appears rarely. While invincibility is desirable, you never know when it will stop working. The game is really difficult because you have to complete 14 stages in a single playthrough. You can train all unlocked stages from the level select menu, but you cannot advance in this manner. The most difficult challenge is managing speed. Moving your character forward increases your speed, while moving all the way to the left causes you to fly at normal speed. However, enemies from the left can easily kill you because you do not notice them coming. This frequently forces you forward and into an impending asteroid that you cannot avoid due to fast speed. The best option is to conserve your shield for such occasions. Boss fights are included, however they are poorly balanced and involve cheap shots. For example, the first one is constantly moving towards you, while enemies appear from behind. You cannot manage both, so you get cornered and lose one life after another. Lack of balance is a big problem. There are simply too many occasions where you take a cheap hit, whether it be from a mob of opponents approaching from behind, a demon shooting a fireball directly at you from close range, or something else. Problematic balance is clear from the number of additional lives available inside a stage, but even this is insufficient to compensate. Except for reaching the end, there is no other goal. There is one extra mission that includes whales. They can appear at various times, and your goal is to keep them on the screen by shooting at them from the left or right side. Doing this while also eliminating foes will probably result in your death. Whales are featured in the space aquarium, a supplementary idle mode in which whales swim around and consume orbs. There are also some collectible aliens, but I haven’t found a single one. The fact you have to complete all stage while dealing with unfair situations does not translate into fun gameplay. Fortunately, low price saves the game, so you might make it through a few stages, but you probably won’t return after the “game over” screen.
This is a fantastic side-scrolling shooter with all the vibes of Trapper Keeper/side of a custom van styled art. You play as an old winged metalhead who shreds a wide variety of alien baddies with the power of his rock. If you like shooters, or if you like metal, or if you like video games in general, this game is an absolute steal and highly recommended.
