Definitely has potential! Was pleasantly surprised. Still some bugs, but dev is very active and responsive.
6/10 A TBS with card-based magic abilities. Good: - the basic combat system seems interesting - 3D gfx are nice overall. I was surprised that the game was made by just 2 ppl. The female mage character is kinky! - 2D elements of the UI are also quite nice. In general, the game has a nice polished look So-so: - the story seems to be generic fantasy. I see that they attempt to find a reason for the fighting but it's not very convincing or interesting. Though I just don't like fantasy, maybe other players will have a different view - the 3D presentation of troops doesn't work that well. You end up looking at your own troops from above and see basically gray circles. The 3D figures are done well but when they are just gray (like tin soldiers) it looks like a cheap board game. That's kinda in contrast with the otherwise colorful, interesting presentation of the rest of the game (backgrounds, table, the girl character, the images on the cards) - movement of the units: they jump between tiles as if they were chess pieces. This also doesn't fit the good overall quality of the 3D graphics - there are some 3D animations (like, when the girl throws everything up in the air and puts down a new board) which are probably too intense. It kinda feels silly to play on a table after seeing so much action going on elsewhere - I'm not even sure 3D was the right choice for this game. It adds nothing to the gameplay itself but makes most elements of the game skewed because of the 3D perspective. For example, mana counters: these could just be 2D and easily readable. But in 3D the number is viewed from an angle, and the opponent's mana is displayed at a much smaller scale - not sure (since I have only played 2 battles) but movement seems to be too restrictive. E.g. the archer can move just 1 tile horizontally/vertically, not even diagonally. In general, it seems the game is using chess-like movement patterns ("move only diagonally by 2 tiles") instead of generic "movement points" to which computer players are more used to. It's not bad, just unusual - a minor psychological thing: the mage girl is standing on the other side of the board which make her feel like an opponent. Instead, she is an advisory or an ally. To perceive her as such, she should be on the right or left side ("friend"), or next to you on your side ("ally). I guess the "friend" place is better because the player could then see both her and the board. Though frankly she'd just better work in 2D, in one of the bottom corners of the screen, as it's typically done in mobile games Bad: - the text on the cards is blurry. Maybe it's because my laptop is 5 years old, and the gfx settings defaulted to "low". Anyways, it was straining for the eyes to read the text, and I just gave up - the cards are hard to pick up. They move constantly when you are moving the mouse over them. This problem could easily be avoided if the card were just 2D, at the bottom of the screen. Having them in 3D really adds nothing gameplay-wise. It just makes the text show at an uncomfortable angle and also creates these animations in 3D which only make controls harder - English text is shaky. I guess the devs are Korean? E.g. "Option" is the typical way Japanese/Asian devs write "Options". The bad thing is that the tutorial instructions are hard to follow because of frequent mistranslations or weirdly formulated sentences. I'm actually not a native speaker myself, and weeding through broken English is quite difficult for me. For a strategy game that's critical because the rules are already hard enough to grasp, since they are unique. I'd recommend hiring an English native speaker to proofread the text. - the tutorial would need improvement. Some things are explained too late. E.g. counter-attacks. This would just need playtesting to get right, to see what players have trouble with. Overall, it's a promising project with a great artist on the team. Just really needs more polishing (playtesting and English proofreading). Maybe a re-design of the UI, with about half of stuff switched from 3D objects to simpler 2D overlays. Even in its current state, it may be worth a look for hardcore strategy/CCG fans.
