Good game! With shooting and platforming puzzles. Should keep you entertained for an few hours.
This game tastes strange. Such an odd unrefined idea with some clarity and fun hidden within. After reading the developer's commentary, I agree that he achieved his initial goal of a hostile and foreign world. However, the game demands two play throughs to understand it. It is a short game, so can be done quickly. Spoilers The lore of the world just jumps out at the end. The idea of a superstructure holding the entirety of a solar system in place sounds interesting, yet seems to me to be off. A bleak dying portion of a generation of workers who long forgot what they were meant to do, and thus caused their own destruction is an interesting idea. Just that, seems so rather out of no where without extensive reading into the logs and the developer's commentary. I am rambling here, but that is also a point about this game. You should give this game a chance. Play through twice and decide how this idea stands.
Fun dive into a very compelling universe broken up into individual well thought out sections that all flow together in a way that felt very reminiscent of the Half-Life games. Each level/area is a hauntingly beautiful set-piece that has its own distinct artistic vision with its own story, while all still feeling like a cohesive adventure through a cold metal and concrete megastructure. Combat stays pretty minimalistic (very limited weapon selection and enemy variety) while still fun enough to keep you engaged throughout the entire experience. I particularly loved the choice to apply injuries instead of instantly dying when reaching 0 health, this was a very unique take on the health aspect of a shooter, because instead of dying and retrying a section over and over, you are then forced to change your approach to combat on-the-fly. For six bucks, you don't really have an excuse to miss out on this refreshingly unique short story. Here's to hoping we get to see more of this world in the future!
We need more similar games with a megastructure theme.
Just finished and 100 percented the Metal Garden and have a few things to say about the game. Will keep it short. Metal Garden is an atmospheric and cosy little game with a strong emphasis on mega structures, which I guess was inspired by works such as “Blame!” by Tsutomu Nihei. The game has a solid shooting mechanic and even a bit more - such as leaning, with i personally didn’t use a lot while playing. Really liked the ability to hide HUD elements and a weapon so that you can take mess-free screenshots of places you may find aesthetically pleasing. Also had some sweet time exploring out-of-bounds areas, which was made possible by double jumping via rocket boots. Will note that the game has some clipping issues with highlighted elements`s highlight disapring when layered over certain structures. In the end, I totally recommend playing the game at least once and hope that the devs will bless us with even more of liminal spaces - giant structures games.
I love this game. the combat feels good, and the mechanic of instead of dying, one of your limbs are injured, is such a cool idea. SPOILERS:
The ending with the reveal of Mars, hits hard. the music is also incredible, especially when used sparingly.
I would love for a sequel or another addition to this world.
