Cute game! Just like you!
Unironically one of the better indie fighters out there. Every single character feels unique, the game has a very unique mechanic (collecting bubbles for meter), the tutorial is robust and the training is full of features. Heck, this game teaches you how to punish every single characater with every single character, a feature I've never seen before. This game is truly a labor of love from someone who swims (lol) in the FGC culture. Con - The graphics are outdated. Counter con - the "2003" aesthetic is kinda nice ngl. If you are new to fighting games - buy this. It's cheap! If you are a FGC veteran, support our indies!
for its price it's hard to complain. there is clearly a lot of love and passion put into this game. it doesn't play quite like any other fighting game i've played. part of me wishes the characters looked as good in-game as they do in their 2d artworks, but they look fine enough in 3d. the netcode is good, although i wasn't able to find almost anyone online (par for the course with indie fighters). tldr: it's silly, it's cheap, it's fun
I don't know much about fighting games, so I can't give a strong opinion regarding the systems or make comparisons. What I can say about Merfight is that its aquatic theme is original, it has some lore to justify the story mode with its characters and unlockable skins. Also, graphically looks nice, and the gameplay is entertaining (I press buttons and things happen). It also has online play, but I did not try it. I imagine that someone interested in that could buy it with a friend or even use Remote Play. For my part thumbs up, but just in case you have the demo to try for free.
Solid fighting game with good netcode and many creative systems and features. Support your indies.
I played this game before it was on steam and really loved it. I know a community of people who are crazy about this game, and after playing it a bit more I can see why! The game is beautiful, funny, runs well, and has depth. What more could a FG lover ask for? There is also a thriving and bustling community for the game so finding people to fight with should be easy! Edit: just had the pleasure of playing more matches with a friend. The new balance patches feel great, and the graphical upgrades look wonderful. I totally get it now, this game rocks!
Disclaimer: I, the person using this account to write the review, have worked on this game, but in a contract role where I don't get any extra money if you buy the game. And I've also played this game since before it was on Steam so my actual total hour count has definitely surpassed 100 by now. The big thing gameplay wise that sets Merfight apart from other fighting games is its meter mechanics. Each bar of meter you gain gives you another resource that can be used to cancel out of any attack, and if you stay at full meter you won't earn any more. So you want to be constantly earning and spending meter. Meter gain is fairly quick, once the supers and cancels start flying the pace of the game accelerates. Merfight also has a simple vs motion input system, where you can use both freely, but your incentive for using motion inputs for specials is gaining meter for successfully doing the motion. In general the game is focused on universal systems over character specific mechanics, so it's not too tricky to play around with different characters. But each character still has their own distinct way of playing, and room for you to make your own style with them. Single player wise there's the usual offerings of arcade and combo trials, as well as block and punish trials. Each base game character has their own story mode where they get to be the main character and face off against each other character, so everyone is involved. Your main won't be sidelined to a three second meaningless cameo in a tie in movie disguised as a game mode, you will actually get to learn more about your favorite character and play as them. Also the DLC characters that have been released or are imminently upcoming are free. You were already paying about a dollar per fighter when the game isn't on sale, and now it's even less than that with the two free DLC fighters (one of which is not out yet but will be soon). Downside is the current lack of story for them, but that may be rectified in the future. Lastly, you should consider leaving reviews for indie games you enjoy to help them out, I'm working on that myself.
This game is a lot of fun. Pretty solid fighter. I like where it's headed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=om4PbiqlB8E&t=1219s
Great game that offers a lot of interesting takes on the fighting game formula while being incredibly charming.
Intuitive and fluid system with one of the best dash cancel mechanics available in any fighting game. Variety of playstyles among the cast, easy to pick up and engaging. Rollback netcode. You should be firing this game up at your locals.
