✔️ Tested on Steam Deck, it works fine (26/10/2024). 'R2' button to advance text and touchscreen for the menu. This is the kind of game that makes me wish there was a neutral review button. Art and production are really nice but the story is quite dull and cliché, nothing to write home about.
I received a free copy of this game for my curator, Games for Hopeless Romantics. Melty Amethyst is a short indie otome game about a young woman, Hotaru, who works part-time at a convenience store along with her friend Hana. One day, they get a new coworker, a guy named Nao who doesn't speak much and comes off as a bit standoffish to most people. The story isn't groundbreaking, but it's not supposed to be. It's a fluffy story about two people falling in love with each other. Hotaru quickly learns that Nao isn't intentionally rude, he's just extremely shy, and they eventually become closer together. Partway through we learn that
Nao is a moderately famous streamer
and the duo have to deal with issues arising from that, but nothing ever too dramatic for the mood of the story. There's only a single choice in the game, near the end, and it's (imo) obvious in context which leads to the good ending and which leads to the bad ending. Overall it's cute and heartwarming, a nice way to spend an hour. It helps that I love shy guys in otome games lol, if you do too then this won't be a bad way to spend $3. The art is very cute, although unfortunately the store page spoils all but one of the CGs in the game, including the very last one. I know you want to show off the art but I think that's a bit much... There's full voice acting for every character except the MC, which is a nice touch for an indie VN. Nao and Hana's VAs both suit them really well! The biggest issue with the game is the English translation. I can't speak too well about accuracy, but the actual prose of the English script isn't very good. It's understandable (outside of a couple lines that don't really make sense), but that being the best thing I can say about it isn't great. The writing is consistently stiff, with semi-frequent grammar errors and occasional typos. The main cast are all young adults (Hotaru and Hana are 21, Nao is 19) but they don't talk like it at all—I'm not even talking about slang, their overall speaking styles are just too formal for the setting most of the time. There's some jarring word choices, like the script consistently referring to the cash register as the "cashier". Overall, a lot of stuff that makes it obvious that whoever translated the script isn't quite fluent in English. It makes me feel bad for the original developer that their game is being represented like this. If nothing else, I'm confident this game wasn't machine translated; the mistakes in the script are mostly mistakes that humans make, not mistakes that MTL services make. There was clearly effort put into this, and I want to be glad that there are people translating indie VNs into English. But it's hard to be enthusiastic about the final result when it's like this. If the EN publisher is reading this, I would suggest finding an editor who's fluent in idiomatic English (either as a native speaker or someone who lives in an English-speaking country). Indie devs deserve to have their games presented well in translation! Also, some minor technical issues: - The text preview in the options menu is still in Japanese - There are save files left in the game which should not have been included in the release ETA August 18: I have updated this review from positive to negative now that Steam has introduced language-specific review scores.
