In a word: Exhilarating. That was an amazing way to spend 40 minutes. What a rush. ----------------
PROS
+ fast-paced parkour runner on training wheels. I have never really been a fan of first person runners but Matter is very forgiving and feels like it will nudge you onto platforms that you don't really think you should have made. + absolutely kicking soundtrack. The music is fantastic for the game with each level having its own unique sound and feel. + evolving. The game introduces a few different way to traverse the landscape and it doesn't ever feel stale. + surreal. The whole thing is a psychedelic trip through a land where gravity seems to be optional. ---------------
CONS
- pricey. I don't know how you put a price limit on games but I think 5 bucks for under an hour of content is a bit expensive......usually. For Matter I have to make an exception. It was basically like buying a ticket for a ride on a rollercoaster only I get to keep the rollercoaster and ride it whenever I want. ------------------ What a cool game. At some points I felt like something out of a Marvel movie, making insane leaps and crashing to the ground on one knee in the superhero pose. I couldn't help but think of SUPERHOT with the stylish blocks dripping with deep colours and that feeling again of being somewhere otherworldly where I had insane powers. Matter is an excellent joyride of a game.
What is Matter? I'm still not entirely sure. Suffice to say it's a platforming experience with an artistic twist, impossible parkour, evolving landscapes, and dynamic music. The experience will run you about 30 minutes, but it sticks with you when it's over - which in my mind, is the mark of a good game. Never worry about jumping off into the void + Reactive music makes you feel like you're controlling the mix tape + Fun, forgiving physics. You can basically moon jump, and even on fast moving platforms, you seem to have some insulation from their inertia. + Varies the gameplay by breaking up platforming sections with small, mario-galaxy style planets for you to find objects to progress. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1800222410
Cons
- Short. 30 minutes. But IMO, that's just the right length for these kinds of games. - The planet segments lack any particular compass or landmarks. You have to navigate solely by sound that the objects you need produce, and once you've found them, you need to hike back to the center, and it doesn't have an audio cue. - Because the world is so abstract, it's easy to get lost. If you happen to go back for any reason, platforms you've already touched remain colored which can make your return trip even harder (since white is your only visual cue where to go). Always keep an eye on the red line. - Two segments of the game require little brainpower. One has a series of bubbles you click to dash between, the other is a floating "asteroid belt" you similarly short dash through, except the path is lengthy and lacks any real obstacles. These devolve into button mashers. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1800222447 What makes Matter noteworthy, besides the obvious visuals, is the stage design and music. You'll marvel at the impossible geometry you need to traverse, make majestic leaps of faith, and bunny hop through segments at blazing speeds. Each of your actions has a musical complement, so you'll be shaping the soundtrack. If you like concept art games, grab it on sale. If you require a more structured, interactive experience, then it's probably not for you. This is my choice for the 2019 Outstanding Visual Style Award nominee. Matter focuses on creating an emotional tone rather than on obstructing progression. Success lies in enjoying the experience as you are careening inevitably to a conclusion. There is a definite epochal progression in atmosphere through three pairs of chapters and a denouement, which is reflected in the pacing and complexity of the gameplay challenges. While Matter has some anxious, frustrating and melancholy moments, the fun (positive reinforcement) to anxiety (negative reinforcement) ratio is solidly favorable.

People seem to get really immersed and say it's an experience, but it was nothing special for me. If they made it free, or if they added more to the game (such as a level editor, more varied and interesting gameplay, and maybe a story) then this would probably be perfect, sadly it's not. I'm only recommending this because there's not a neutral, or a medium option. TLDR: Get it if you have spare cash, and you want something a little interesting, that's a change of pace from traditional games.
I bought this just because it looked cool and it was on sale, but HOOOOLY COW does this game exceed expectations. Absolutely bizarre experience; glitchy, different, and even the music took me on a whole other journey. Definitely worth the money. Even the ending had me questioning what it all meant, if it even meant anything at all. Regardless. Awesome game!
Matter is kind of like a platforming walking simulator with weird physics...so basically, you jump around a surreal landscape with strange gravity and you respawn if you miss a jump, no stress, cool. https://youtu.be/O9p1Ooyag48
Its just so abstract and the noises give me the tingles, really enjoyed it
Your quote: 'Matter is a good representation of our wills and the way we think about gamedev : it's all about expressing ourselves as creators, to make you live different kind of experiences...' You most certainly nailed it. I loved every second of it. A great game if you need some distraction from everyday life. Please don't dissappear, dev....I for one would love more distractions in the matter....uhm..as a matter of fact (I did it again), I also like that its not all about dark matter...but to move towards the light! ok ok, I will stop now. HIGHLY Recommended if you like little distractions...as I said. Thank you Devs!
