Math Hero is yet another of literally hundreds of lazy amateur 2D retro top-down shooter/brawlers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. But, somehow, they found a way to make this worse. It's a somewhat family friendly educational type of 2D top down shooter... you see, every time you shoot, you're given an arithmetic question to answer. Then you can move and shoot again. This is not making education better, it's making gaming worse. The technical implementation for this game is really at the bottom of the barrel... it would be barely acceptable in the early 1990's, but this was released this decade.. it's just not okay for games to be this badly made. The game is very simplistic, small and limited in scope and ambition. This feels more like a tech demo, proof of concept or student homework assignment rather than a fully fledged product designed for PC gamers. As such it doesn't offer any real value as a serious PC game. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The implementation here is of such poor quality, the developer couldn't work out how to make the game display in fullscreen, it only runs in a window. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs. A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", Right Games has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Math Hero is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
overall alright for in between.
Super cool game! I love it! Gameplay is easy - player can move with WASD. Aiming is automatic. To shoot you need to enter the right answer. You can dodge from enemy bullets with your WASD. 6+4 / 10!

GOAT game
Math Hero, developed and published by Right Games, is an educational action game that attempts to make mathematics more entertaining by combining mental arithmetic with fast-paced arcade gameplay. Instead of relying on traditional quizzes or textbook-style exercises, the game places players in combat scenarios where solving mathematical problems becomes the primary weapon against waves of enemies. This creative premise gives the experience an identity that separates it from many educational titles, offering an engaging way to practice arithmetic while maintaining the excitement of a simple action game. Its accessible mechanics make it suitable for younger audiences, but anyone looking to sharpen their calculation speed can also find value in its straightforward design. The core gameplay revolves around answering math equations as quickly and accurately as possible. Each correct solution allows the player to eliminate enemies before they become overwhelming, creating a satisfying balance between puzzle-solving and survival. Rather than emphasizing complicated controls, the game focuses almost entirely on the player's ability to think quickly under pressure. This design keeps the learning process at the forefront while still delivering enough arcade tension to encourage repeated play sessions. The increasing pace naturally pushes players to improve both their accuracy and reaction time. One of the game's most practical features is its customization. Players are free to choose which arithmetic operations they want to practice, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The difficulty settings also allow adjustments to the size and complexity of the numbers involved, making the experience suitable for beginners as well as those who want a greater challenge. This flexibility gives the game educational value because it can adapt to different skill levels instead of forcing everyone through the same progression. Randomly generated stages further help keep each session from feeling identical, adding variety despite the relatively simple gameplay structure. The presentation is modest but functional. Bright visuals, readable text, and uncomplicated menus ensure that mathematical problems remain easy to recognize even when the screen becomes crowded with enemies. The graphics are not particularly detailed, but they serve their purpose without distracting from the educational focus. Likewise, the sound effects and background music complement the action without becoming intrusive, creating a pleasant atmosphere for shorter or longer practice sessions. Math Hero's greatest strength lies in how naturally it encourages repetition. Because higher scores depend on solving problems quickly and consistently, players are motivated to improve through practice rather than obligation. Online leaderboards add another layer of replay value by giving competitive players an incentive to refine their performance. Instead of feeling like homework, each session becomes an opportunity to beat previous records while reinforcing mental arithmetic skills. This combination of learning and competition makes the game effective as both an educational resource and a casual arcade experience. The game does have limitations that become more noticeable over time. While randomized maps provide some variety, the overall gameplay loop changes very little after several sessions. There are few additional mechanics or progression systems to introduce fresh challenges beyond increasing difficulty. More advanced mathematics or additional game modes could have extended the game's longevity and broadened its appeal. Players looking for a deep action title or a comprehensive educational platform may find the available content somewhat limited after mastering the basics. Despite these shortcomings, Math Hero succeeds at delivering exactly what it promises. It transforms arithmetic practice into an enjoyable activity through accessible gameplay, customizable difficulty, and rewarding score-chasing mechanics. Right Games has created an educational title that effectively balances learning and entertainment without overcomplicating either aspect. While its presentation and content remain relatively modest, the game fulfills its purpose well and stands as a worthwhile option for students, parents, teachers, or anyone interested in improving mental math through interactive play. Rating: 6/10
