7/10 nice game , pleasantly very surprised
The only good thing about this game is the power combinations. Game is old so I'm mostly on multiplayer now which is fun in itself. If people were better at the game, it would feel more satisfying which leads me to one issue. Power interactions are not clearly and sometimes not even accurately defined. Making you guess and find out builds slowly in a game that makes even the best builds feel much weaker than Mass Effect 3's best builds. The jump and dash movements are choppy. Menu UI and controls are terrible. There's tons of fluff content which is needed to keep incentives, but it's a little much. It takes forever to get good weapons and characters in the packs but on the plus side, you can get everything through gameplay. The single player is eh. Your character has no identity. You're literally just your father's child. You don't pick a starting class (well technically you do, but it makes no difference 5 hours into the game. The game allows you to upgrade every power in the game which seems cool at first but since you can potentially get similar perks for all three combat styles, the buffs you get from each is incredibly low which means your power grows incredibly slow. To feel powerful in any build, you have to level up a lot which means side quests. The side quests just feel like to-do list items. There's minimal world building, character development... the best story telling is when you're in the Nomad driving around when your companions banter and tell stories. Too bad driving the Nomad around is just as boring as it was in the first Mass Effect. Not sure why they came back to that. To make it even worse, the game is open world, but every world is a barren wasteland so instead of exploring dense linear town hubs like in Mass Effect 2 and 3, you're covering a whole lot of nothing in a very boring to use 6 wheeler that doesn't even have guns. This is about 65% of single player, more if you want to get skill points to make your character actually strong. Like I said earlier, the power interactions in this game are great, but you will scarcely encounter them in single player because of how slow and weak powers are. Your teammates are much stronger than you all the time, but the AI (enemy and friendly) is incredibly stupid so you feel like you are basically fighting alone. I choose my squad based on personality in this game as combat differences are minimal and the story interactions don't really change based on who's in your party. The research and development addition gives you the ability to make some cool variants to gear and weapons but most of your resources come from doing that barren wasteland exploring so I tend to not make much for the lack of materials and unwillingness to explore. There are no fun surprises or anything in this game. The whole thing is "go here, no here, and finally here, now you're done. Onto the next." It's awfully boring execution of some good ideas and additions. Hopefully the next game is better. I would only recommend this game if you want to do PvE multiplayer with friends. Not many people play anymore and I see the same people every time I login so I wouldn't suggest getting into it now if you don't have someone else to play with. Soloing isn't out of the question, but some of the multiplayer missions are nearly impossible with the entire map of enemies attacking you. The biggest culprit are the 'Hack' and 'Upload' objectives where you have to stay in a small circle for a set timer and if enemies get into that circle with you, timer stops. This is fine with multiple people as the more people in the circle, the faster the timer, and also, additional teammates can lure bullet sponge enemies away from the objective to keep the upload going, but if you're solo, you don't get the grace of the entire squad's upload speed. It goes as slow if 1 out of 4 squad members does the upload. This pigeon holes you incredibly for solo missions which makes this very annoying. The enemy variety could be great except for the fact that your MP characters are defensively weak. Low shields and health on most characters and even Krogan kinda suck. Your Krogan will stumple from getting punched by a human. If you are a human with a regular omni-blade, nothing stumbles to your hit. This game just doesn't feel coherent or immersive. Just an early 2000's arcade game with good graphics
Bought this game on sale. Played only single-player and more easy difficulty/story. ;). Before not playing other (older) parts of ME (1-3). Game is meanwhile 9 years old, but graphic for me is okay. I like the mixture of having some action and puzzles to solve. But ME:A has too many of them. This takes a lot of time and often distracts you from the actual task. You feel bored or lost often. The story itself is somewhat unspectacular and—apart from a few hints—is told independently of ME:1–3. I had a lot of DirectX related crashes and also often problems with the (stupid) EA mandatory account. However: If you buy on sale for just some € (like me) it is really fine and you can play many hours for this with a good scenery, action, puzzles and characters. If you know and like the ME:1-3 (I read meanwhile often) forget ME:A as it has (compared) a poor story and is not really a successor of this series.
5/10. It's just okay. I think I get why people disliked this game. In 2026, it definitely feels dated at times. The story is quite average, and while the combat is fun, the companions, exploration, side stories, and side quests are all just... okay. I got it for $3, and for that price, it's a great deal with a lot of content. But overall, it's just mediocre, and I expected more from BioWare. I ran into a few bugs, playing at 4K with HDR caused occasional flickering, but I only had one crash. Ultimately, I think the fact that it's just "okay" instead of amazing is why it gets so much hate. The writing feels dated and the characters don't really fit.
I love this game. I played it once years ago, now getting the itch to install it again and replay it. I loved the planets, the environment, the combat. It's a bit different from the other mass effects in term of vibe and scope, but man i love this game. I may love Andromeda more than the rest of the franchise
