I was intrigued at first but spent 6 dizzying hours trying to figure out the build story mechanic. Most of the time I had no idea who I should be talking to or what I should be doing. I was stumbling around making meaningless small talk and trying not to flirt with every character that appeared before me. The days goin way too fast and I found the daily dinner "chat" pointless and a waste of time that distracted from the main
"murder mystery"
plot. I wanted to like this game but It I cannot fathom replaying this again just to get the different endings or trying and figure out the build story mechanic. Also having to dress up for every single interaction seemed like a fun gimmick until it became tedious task before every interaction. There are a few things I liked in the game, the setting and exposition were neat and I like how my character was able to be "customized" to an extent. But the plot and main story building mechanic made me really dislike this game.
MIXED REVIEW Honestly, if I could give this game a score it would be like 5 out of 10. The setting is lovely, writing and characters have depth and appeal. The atmosphere and the audio are very immersive, but the game is really lacking somethiing about... being a game? The game looks more like a dating simulator at some point, rather than a spinoff on the Fallen London and Sunless sea story. There's too little you can do with only 2 actions per day. You really feel like you could do a lot more, but the game forces you to close every day after having the chance to make only 2 choices, and I think this is a poor game design decision. I lost interest quickly, finding myself repeating the same few actions with very little direct tangible consquences. It would be pretty ok to repeat the same things everyday when you finish your day, but the fact that you do really few more things makes it become a boring routine. There's too much mistery too, and so far in the game (half the game i suppose by the pacing) I feel like I've understood little-to nothing about the world around me. Too many cliffhangers that don't lead anywhere, and I feel it's disappointing. Teasing is good when you can gain something, but if you never know the consequences of your actions, not much is attractive anymore. That's it. Lovely setting and all, but I don't feel like giving a positive review. And really, I could avoid giving a review, but I really liked the others game by Failbetter, and if this can help improve the actual game or making better decisions later, I feel like it can be good to write this.
I regret having bought this so rashly. It is definitely not for me. It says its a "dating sim" but it has 0 romance, and what is there is, to me, not good writing...
peak fiction
Kinda mid, but if you are into both murder mystery and fallen london characters then definitely buy! It'll be worth it. Less worth it but not very regrettable if you don't like murder mystery but are VERY into a specific character to the point you're willing to spend real-life days grinding 10,000 proscribed materials just to get a piece of dialogue with it.
Text based with still drawings. Mind boggling mystery.
The worst Failbetter game imo, but still a solid addition to the Fallen London world.
I don't know why I bought this. Probably because I loved Sunless skies which was their previous game. This is just a text based novel game with some eldritch stuff thrown in and several romance options. You're supposed to play this over and over again to explore different stories but nothing really captivates here.
It is a nice little game in the weird and wonderful world of the Neath. I liked it.
Could maybe be fun if replaying wasn't such a chore.
