This is one of my favorite visual novels of all time. I have read both original and the remaster in Japanese several times so I would really want to recommend it for others, but I really cant because of the lazy localization. I wondered beforehand how they were going to do the translation of this because this visual novel has voice only lines in the Japanese version quite often and it seems they went with the lazy route and ignored them completely and left them untranslated. This is my biggest issue with it and the main reason I cant unconditionally recommend it. It prevents people who can't understand Japanese from fully understanding what is going on in it. There are other things that I don't like the text font is rather big and that causes that they have to shorten and even leave out some things that the characters say and think. Also this might be just my personal opinion but the nick names they give to characters in the localization are pretty bad. Nick names might not bother someone who has not read the Japanese version and shortening things because of big font does not prevent you from understanding what is going on so the biggest issue is still that they left the voice only lines completely untranslated. I do admit I wondered even beforehand why they chose this visual novel to translate because voice only lines would make it more difficult, but if they choose this visual novel to translate they should have made sure before that they can actually do it properly.
One of the most anticipated visual novels (for me at least) is finally here. 9nine series was one of the best visual novels I’ve ever read. It did not disappoint me at all with its amazing storytelling and visually appealing character design. This then led me to dive into Palette titles and looking for more peak content from them, Mashiro Iro Symphony being one of them. As there was no English localization for this title, I opted to watch the anime version instead. The anime was okay-ish, but the Sana scene hit me hard and I really wanted to know more about the story aside from what was being told in the anime version. In 2023, Palette announced that Mashiro Iro Symphony would be receiving a Remake FULL HD version. This news filled me with hope, as I prayed for an English translation by Sekai Project, the same company responsible for the 9nine series. However, it was Shiravune who picked up this title(though they were also responsible for Otome*Domain). Honestly, I am not a fan of moege as they tend to make me fall asleep without even realizing it (cough cough, Yuzusoft titles). However, with my prior knowledge from the anime version of Mashiro Iro Symphony, I still find myself highly interested. I was expecting an entire rework on character sprites, CGs and maybe a couple new CGs drawn by Izumi Tsubasu, but all they did was adding HD quality for old CGs, animation for H-scenes and some changes on UI. It was quite disappointing because Izumi Tsubasu’s art has been improved over the years and I had really grown into liking her breath-taking coloring techniques and art styles ever since reading 9nine. But here it is, everything is still the same and I’ll just have to suck it up because I am still going to spend my money on this regardless. Mashiro Iro Symphony is definitely a must-get if you are a moege lover to begin with or visual novel beginners. But if you are not a fan of Izumi Tsubasu’s older art, I still highly recommend you to try it out because this is definitely worth your time.

i love the vn but this translation is so stupid. if you understand even a little bit of japanese you will notice that some voice lines do not match the text. Some entire conversations are straight up changed. nuances that make certain scenes enjoyable such as usage of the variations of the characters' nicknames are all changed (homogenized) into just the character's plain name. This matters A LOT in this vn. some jp idioms are translated into something that is not even remotely related to the original conversation. voice-only lines are not translated which is actually a good thing that whoever translated this didnt get to vandalize those as well. Only recommended if you can understand spoken japanese and only occasionally use the shoddy english tl to check your general understanding and know to ignore it when it is inaccurate, otherwise what you will get from this is an incredibly inauthentic experience. In which case, go check the anime adaptation out for an authentic symphony.
No doubt that this is a great VN but thumbs down for not translating the voice-only scenes. Changing when you guys actually patch it later.

Painting the Color of Love
As someone who watched the 2011 anime adaptation of "Mashiroiro Symphony," my interest was piqued when an HD remake of Palette's 2009 cult classic was announced. So, with the Steam release coming out a year after the Japan release, how does it fare in comparison? Let's find out. Once again, I want to express my thanks to Shiravune for providing a review copy of this release.
Production Value

[th]Category[/th][th]Result[/th]

Resolution1080p (Native)

Frame RateUnlocked

Bugs / IssuesMinor

Playtime37 hours

R18 contentNone. R18 patch is available

"Mashiroiro Symphony HD -Love is Pure White-" falls under the category of a game remaster, a recreation of the original 2009 title. Therefore, let's begin by comparing some of the changes. The most notable change is the update from a 4:3 aspect ratio to a 16:9 aspect ratio, along with a bump to a native 1080p resolution. UI, backgrounds, and CGs are all redrawn to fit the new aspect ratio and resolution. However, character sprites remain mostly untouched, leaving them looking more blurred and compressed in comparison. Anyhow, putting aside the technical upgrades it receives, the game still holds up remarkably well even by today's standards. "Mashifoni's" art style heavily draws from early 2000s anime (not surprising), with a more muted, simpler color palette. One of the things that stood out to me is the sense of space it is able to convey to the readers. Unlike your traditional visual novel, the game has a heavy emphasis on the first-person perspective and takes into account the distance of each character within a person's field of view. Adjusting not just the zoom levels of each asset (which includes doors and windows), characters also receive a back sprite to convey the direction in which they are currently facing. The same attention to detail extends to the audio as well; for example, if a character is further away from the main character, their volume would be significantly softer, or if a character is behind a door, their voice would sound muffled. Combined with its pleasing soundtrack and excellent voice acting, it is an experience to behold. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3251973396 But we have to talk about the translation itself. There are options for English, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese, with Japanese available as audio only. As someone who understands all four languages, I found the English translation to be quite sub-par in comparison. There are several instances of "lost in translation" moments where the text shown does not match the original context. It creates a disorienting effect where the text I read doesn't align with what I hear. To add salt to injury, the English translation also changes the way certain characters address each other. For example, Sakuno addresses her brother as "兄さん (nii-san)," but the translation renders this as "Shingo," which is the protagonist's first name. While this might seem acceptable initially, it becomes problematic when other characters also refer to Shingo by his first name. This inconsistency clashes with the original naming scheme and fails to demonstrate the closeness between the siblings. Frankly, it feels rushed and unpolished in comparison to the other two Chinese options.
Story
Kagamidai is a blend of two towns, old and new, each painted in completely different colors. Shingo Uryu, a young man from the newer side of town, finds himself part of the provisional merger program at Yuihime Girls', a prestigious girls-only institution from the other side. With his current school, Kagamidai High, facing dire financial straits due to Japan's continuous birthrate decline, a combined class of both schools is created to test the upcoming merger's effects. Mashifoni fits the label of a charage (character-driven game), where emphasis is placed on developing relationships with the characters, delving into their personalities, interactions, and connections with the main protagonist. Each character has their own distinct set of quirks and personality traits, yet in Mashifoni's case, those traits are never overly exaggerated due to its more grounded approach in presenting its story (something that I sorely miss from most visual novels today). Arguably, the greatest strength that ties the experience together is its narrative. Mashifoni does a great job in ensuring each character is present throughout the story, from start to finish. Additionally, the dialogue relies less on info dumping and more on encouraging readers to read between the lines, just like a human would. Sure, some of the tropes can feel a bit dated, but they never feel one-dimensional. It's a testament to good writing rather than a reflection of its age. That being said, I do want to point out our main protagonist here. In my opinion, Shingo feels more akin to a blank slate protagonist, devoid of any personality other than the "good guy" stereotype found in many generic titles. Granted, you'll eventually learn his backstory and how he came to be the person he is today. Even then, it only scratches the surface at best. Ultimately, it gives me the impression that his character is designed to conveniently change according to the plot's needs. Speaking of plot, some may find Mashifoni's story to be boring or stale due to how often its storytelling takes a backseat to prioritize character interactions. Additionally, there are instances where conversations between characters are panned out into the background, as if the narrative itself is not following along with the topic at hand. This is, of course, done intentionally to convey its first-person perspective, simulating a person's thoughts drifting elsewhere. While I do find it to be a nice attention to detail, it can pose a problem for those who don't know Japanese, as they might miss out on some parts of the conversation. Last but not least, let's delve into the heroine routes! While everyone's preferences may vary, I personally find Airi and Miu to be the standouts among the four. Airi is the daughter of the school principal. Not only is she at the top of her academics, but she and Shingo also share the same role as class leaders of the combined class, making her the exemplary student everyone admires. However, Airi's stubbornness and strong sense of responsibility prevent her from changing her approach or opening up to others easily. Her route beautifully represents the theme of the story: love paints a new color, as she learns to lay bare her vulnerabilities and accept her shortcomings, making her growth evident throughout. On the other hand, Miu is the upperclassman and the president of the Kitty Club. She plays the big sister role in the group and has tremendous amount of affection and care towards animals. Miu's route offers the necessary drama to spice up the narrative (for spoiler reasons, I won't dive too deeply into it), which the game severely lacks. As such, making me feel more emotionally invested to the story.
Verdict
Mashifoni is undoubtedly a solid visual novel, especially appealing to romance seekers or fans of the anime. However, the asking price can be steep, even too steep for your average visual novel fan, as purchasing this and the "Sana Edition" could easily cost as much as a AAA game. The translation issues I mentioned earlier also hurt the final presentation. Therefore, my final recommendation is to buy it on sale.
7/10 that could have been a 9/10
My spoiler-free explanation echos many other reviews in that I wholeheartedly agree that the translation is lazy at best and AI-generated at worst. The translation quality distracts the reader from a beautiful visual novel, which offers a symphony of feelz amidst unforgettable characters and a delicate soundtrack. It is a shame that the studio chose an apathetic translator, however, I suspect and hope the game will be patched by either a passionate fan or a professional. I recommend Mashiroiro Symphony to those who are fans of the anime or have read the original visual novel.
Anime VN + 4 waifus + beautiful art/characters = Romcom school theme with a route for each girl. Interesting character development. Angelina for best waifu. Get the 18+ patch for juicy scenes.
