Soft recommend for people like me who still find VR totally enchanting. I don't know that it would be worth playing as a flat screen game, but but as a short guided tour of some beautiful virtual locations, it has some magic. I could have done with it being a little shorter, and there's no way I'm going to go back through it to find all the whatsits to unlock the "secret ending." This may just be my own damage as a parent of 3 childre, but the central mechanic of waiting for a child to slowly do the thing you want them to do while they repeat the same sounds constantly was pretty grating by the end. Still, has moments of real beauty and mystery.
The Team Ico-esque ambience is nice, but in the end, I don't think it was worth slogging through the tedious gaze-based "gameplay" of waiting around for the girl to slowly jog to where you're looking at. I also don't feel like this game really benefited much from being in VR at all.
Mare is a short and simple game where you only have two actions possible: target things and turn around. While the gameplay is simple, there are still multiple possibilities with only targetting things as interaction like: moving your character, powering things on, etc... While I like the concept of moving your character to move your sidekick (the girl), it is a pretty slow gameplay and it can sometimes be frustrating because she randomly stops and waves at you while she moves. The puzzles to find the cat statues were good as you had to take a step back and think how you could make the girl move like you wanted to go to them. Also, I think it is a bad design choice to need to let the girl be "attacked" (no physical harm but still) sometimes, as it is not pleasant mentally. I would have preferred if it was more like you can't do anything because you are being blocked or something. While I leave a positive review, I do not recommend this game to everyone, because, as said before, the gameplay is slow and you do not have a lot of interactions possible. I recommend it for people who wants to play a relaxing game.
Ok, this is a hard one to review. First of all, I really like the art style and the ambient of this game. The world building is very similar to ICO, and I'm sure that's where the creators took the main inspiration from. The puzzles are weak and the focus is mainly on the adventure itself, which I personally do enjoy. The biggest and only issue I have is Child Endangerment! The first time I read that in the review, I was like: pff, it's a video game, of course the girl will go through some environmental hazards. But no, there is no environmental hazards, I AM the hazard. Unfortunately, the creators only took artistic inspirations from ICO, and completely forgot what team ICO said about how the handholding mechanism creates a bond between the player and the character. Because this game forced me to do all sorts of horrible things to the little girl, ranging from
intentionally lighting the tree on fire right next to her with the intent of scaring her way, to intentionally letting the girl be surrounded by monsters and watching her scream until fainted, and ultimately leading her to a dangerous ritualistic ground where you blow up everything into the air (including the girl)
. I don't know what I should feel right now going through all this.
Nice
