A very adorably cute simple beat'em up. Just imagine a good SNES beat'em up and that's about all there is to it.
The worst beat em up I've played so far, it still has the same bugs it had in the demos, the only good thing is the art style, everything else is a disaster
Maki: Paw of Fury, developed by Bacord and published by RedDeer.Games, proudly wears its arcade inspirations on its sleeve. Built as a modern interpretation of the classic side-scrolling brawler, the game follows Maki, a fox martial artist whose peaceful life is disrupted when his best friend is kidnapped by the sinister Mapu. Armed with his martial arts training and an unlikely weapon in the form of a tuna fish, Maki sets out on a journey across the world of Pangea to restore peace. The story is intentionally uncomplicated, capturing the same straightforward charm that defined many of the beat 'em ups that once dominated arcades. Rather than focusing on intricate storytelling, the game prioritizes momentum, humor, and an adventurous spirit. Gameplay is immediately approachable, making it easy for players of all ages to jump in. Combat revolves around chaining attacks, managing enemy positioning, and utilizing Maki's arsenal of moves to clear waves of opponents. While the mechanics remain relatively simple, they are supported by fluid animations and satisfying feedback during encounters. The absurdity of using a giant fish as a weapon adds a memorable identity to the experience, ensuring that the game maintains a playful personality throughout its runtime. It is evident that Bacord aimed to create a title that feels welcoming instead of overly demanding, and that philosophy is reflected in every aspect of the combat design. The game's presentation is one of its strongest qualities. Every environment is colorful and filled with personality, from lush forests and icy landscapes to scorching deserts and other exotic locales spread across the adventure. Character animations are expressive, helping Maki and his allies stand out despite the relatively simple narrative framework. The soundtrack complements the action nicely, blending energetic themes with a nostalgic arcade atmosphere. Combined with its vibrant visual style, Maki: Paw of Fury successfully creates an experience that feels both modern and comfortably familiar, particularly for players who grew up with classic beat 'em-up games. Enemy encounters remain engaging thanks to a respectable assortment of adversaries and boss battles. More than a dozen enemy types populate the game's stages, requiring players to occasionally adjust their tactics instead of relying solely on repetitive button presses. Boss fights serve as highlights, introducing larger personalities and increasing the challenge at key moments. Additionally, the inclusion of a dojo mode gives players an opportunity to practice techniques and become more comfortable with the game's systems. Though veteran players may find the overall difficulty level modest, the accessible approach helps ensure that the title remains enjoyable for newcomers and younger audiences. Local cooperative play further enhances the package. Few genres benefit from couch co-op as much as beat 'em ups, and Maki: Paw of Fury embraces that tradition wholeheartedly. Sharing the adventure with another player transforms the experience into an enjoyable social activity, reminiscent of spending afternoons around an arcade cabinet. Additional playable characters and level-based mini-games also provide extra variety, encouraging repeat playthroughs after the credits roll. These additions may not drastically expand the game's scope, but they contribute to its replayability and reinforce its family-friendly appeal. Of course, the game's dedication to arcade simplicity comes with certain trade-offs. Players looking for extensive progression mechanics, deep customization options, or an especially lengthy campaign may find the experience somewhat limited. Combat, while entertaining, can become repetitive during longer sessions, and the narrative serves primarily as a backdrop for the action rather than a compelling centerpiece. Nevertheless, these shortcomings are largely in line with the genre conventions that inspired the project, making them easier to accept when viewed through that lens. Ultimately, Maki: Paw of Fury succeeds because it understands its audience. It does not attempt to compete with larger, more ambitious action titles, nor does it seek to reinvent the beat 'em up formula. Instead, it delivers a polished and charming homage to a genre that continues to resonate with players decades after its peak. With its appealing art direction, entertaining combat, cooperative gameplay, and lighthearted tone, it offers a delightful experience for anyone seeking a nostalgic adventure with modern presentation.
What if Final Fight and Double Dragon were cutesy family friendly furry? That's what you get with Maki: Paw of Fury. Similar premise of Final Fight where female damsel gets kidnapped and a trio of fighters come to save the day. Battletoads style floating and vehicle sessions save for where this game's equivalent to that infamous difficult classic's riding segments are 10 cajillion times easier! For the playable heroic trio you have your main in the titular character Maki an adorable fox boy, Tincho an American football jock built tank of a Capybara, and Maka a punk rock drummer girl of a cute otter. You come across Teddy Ruxpin like standard enemies, snakes with two different phases, adorable yet deadly penguins, and even ninja like counterparts to Maki himself. Bosses like twins in suits capybaras counterpart to the one Tincho, an animatronic Anubis like entity, as well as a tech wiz of a cat that's sometimes your enemy and sometimes your friend. For those of you adults who either have children of your own or have relatives, or close friends with kids and would like to introduce said children to something simple and cute with a not too overwhelming price look no further than Maki: Paw of Fury!
Maki is a fantastic classic beat 'em up with a unique family-friendly approach, no enemies are killed in the game; they all flee when defeated! It has gorgeous graphics and an amazing OST. The gameplay is easy to pick up, making it approachable for players of all ages. It's a game you can hand to your child, and they’ll enjoy it just as much as you will. Whether you're a retro beat 'em up fan or looking for something wholesome to play with the family, Maki is a great choice.
Cute game, love the graphic style, pretty short story
Really simple beat-em-up that is just two buttons for attacks like those SNES days. No Light or Heavy attacks, just the basics. Fighting is simple and the game is short enough to not drag on for too long. Bosses are pretty basic with the bloated HP and only two attacks they all have. Not too bad of a game and I did enjoy what I played, but not recommended if you wanted some complex combat mechanics.
Cute beat em up with the polishing you would expect from a Garfield game...really wanted to like it but lack of combos and the design of levels and bosses forces you to button mash while waiting for the next stage.
