Magnus Failure is an isometric exploration and adventure game with logical elements. The protagonist of the game is a person who, for unknown reasons, finds himself in the isolation of other people and scans the radio in search of a signal.
Соскучился по старым изометрическим квестам? Попробуй Magnus Failure!
Довольно необычная версия сюжетной головоломки, где нам надо разбираться в технических проблемах в стиле киберпанка. Достижений к игре к сожалению нет, поэтому игра для любителей жанра.
Игровая аналитика от mkabatsky
magnus failure is the first in a series of short (about 1 hour) point & click adventures. language select on startup is like those scene demos, scrolling text, great music, all it's missing is the greetz section. one way to make a great first impression and one of the very few occasions where I didn't want the game to shut up after alt+tab. and to balance things, the main menu was already a disappointment. settings include a couple of languages. the end. well, you can delete your progress or check the credits, but no audio settings whatsoever, let alone separate volume sliders, no windowed mode either. alt+enter only makes a non-resizable window, have to edit the registry to change something. the story's about a guy who likes to listen to radio signals. one day a coded message arrives and he decides to find the sender. it's a pretty gloomy world out there, no people, just some bees and run-down buildings. puzzles are not too taxing, pick up items to use elsewhere, open doors, that sort of thing. there's a lockpicking puzzle, trial & error but not too bad, a bit of sliding action, and no satisfying ending, it's basically chapter 1, only involves getting out of your home. the ui is very mobiley, even though the game is not on mobile based on a quick search. everything's too big to the detriment of usability, especially the inventory, which only shows 3 items at a time, have to scroll up/down all the time, but mouse wheel does nothing, of course. zooming is possible but even setting it to 1x (and resetting it every time the game is started) to get rid of constant and annoying zooming in/out, you don't see much of your surroundings, which is further blocked by black borders around the screen. there's an orthographic camera setting too, no zooming there. seems like a frivolous addition anyway, if only they put half the effort into adding audio settings... at least manual saving is available anytime over a single slot. not great, could be worse, and in some ways it is because esc doesn't bring up the menu, why would it? the rest of the controls are also clunky because the devs decided to reinvent the wheel and turned it into a square. instead of simple point & click controls with a hotspot indicator and tooltips over interactable things, you move around with wasd/arrows (nothing wrong with that except movement is very slow) and if you happen to face an item of interest, it lights up and you have to press the big red action button to look at it or whatever. they managed to come up with something worse than pixel-hunting, congrats. it's supposed to be a game of exploration and adventure, but both aspects are a lot more tedious than they should be. 4 eur would be way too much for something this brief and unsatisfying even if it had all the basics, but as it is, it's not even something to recommend. yet another dev that puts style over functionality, but the music is excellent and I appreciated the c64 reference. the second game, magnus imago, can be played on its own because nothing happened in this one, and it works much better as a 1st-person point & click (not saying it's great, only better).
Really can't recommend. The puzzles are fine enough and the atmosphere is neat, but these seems like a demo that was put out as a full release. The game just kind of ends with no resolution or indication of what's to happen next. Was starting to get in to it and then it kicks me to the main menu! Had to look up a walkthrough to make sure I wasn't missing something. Nope, that's the ending! Aside from that the UI was clearly built for touch screens and I hate having those controls on my screen the whole time.
Sons of Welder / Magnus Series
Writing this after playing practically all the titles in this saga so far, up to Alice Mesmerizing Episodes of Neurosis. The games in this series are quite varied in gameplay, with the first, Magnus Failure, being an isometric exploration puzzle game, and the next two, Imago and Positive Phototaxis, being puzzle games similar to Rusty Lake ones. The ones that follow take a different turn. Lazarus is a visual novel set in a dystopian future, and the other two games, AMEN and NEUROZA, are not part of the main series but share elements of the universe. They are hidden object games where we search for keys amid related artwork. So, with all that said, are these games for you? It depends, because beyond the fact that the games last about an hour each and are not very difficult, you have to take into account that the story is cryptic, abstract, and strange. Don't expect a story with all the usual elements and an ending that ties up all the loose ends, because it's more about interpretation, with a lot of symbolism. If you're attracted to playing something original, handmade, and especially if you like the visual style, don't think twice. They're quite affordable if you take advantage of discounts and bundles.
This is a short (completed in about an hour) game but a pleasant experience nonetheless. The strange atmospheric graphics style, quirky soundtrack and walking-pace action are a perfect blend for me. The puzzles are not over complicated but still require a reasonable mix of logic, skill and guesswork. My only disappointment was the rather abrupt ending to the game. It feels like there is much more to do and to explore. I really hope Sons of Welder expand this game. I recommend it as a relaxing, short distraction.
Failure is the first in a series of 4 games, a point and click hour long adventure that is strange, familiar and also just has these incredible vibes to it. Tactile buttons and other worldly sounds combine with a distinct art style that makes this game wholly unique. I love this series of games. I wrote an essay analyzing them as a collection, speaking with one of the brothers behind them for the piece. Play these games, they are more than worth your time. http://www.pressplaygaming.net/articles/2024/1/19/unravelling-sons-of-welders-magnusnbspgame-series
For a relatively short game, it has fun puzzles and enticing atmosphere. Looking forward to what else the Sons of Welder got to offer in the future!
