---see where this game landed on my Metroidvania tier list beneath this review!--- This is a serviceable little metroidvania. (Though a bit light on the metroidvania aspects) It's short, I took a little under 5 hours to complete it. It's a little rough around the edges with the character movement, it takes some getting used too. You'll experience a number of deaths due to the movement not being as smooth as most other games. The game also feels quite retro, so if you are easily turned off by awkward deaths, or traversing a few screens carefully, it might not be for you. I found exploring to be fun, though I had to be quite careful at all times because it is very easy to die. You can wall jump infinitely from the start, and as you progress you'll find arrows that act as your abilities, though they are in reality little more than glorified door keys. I did like that you could run out of arrows, and occasionally I would want to try and either avoid an enemy, or melee it in order to conserve them. Arrows refill at checkpoints, which is great. I wish more games did this with consumables while giving you a limited amount of them. There is some jank. One thing I noticed was I could not change arrows while doing anything else like jumping, the game couldn't handle both inputs at the same time. Luna's Light is very.. "Light" on the metroidvania elements. There were some forks in the roads and interconnected rooms, but I wasn't doing a lot of backtracking with my special abilities outside of opening the occasional door. The map doesn't show quest NPCS, missing items or anything like that, but it is quite short so I managed. I think I missed one health pickup somewhere, but with no indication as to where that is, I won't be scouring every single screen finding it. The Music loops, while fitting/fun in some sense, are far too short and repetitive. I rarely turn the music off in my games, and I was close to doing that with this one. The colourful graphics/areas of the game were a highlight for me. Dialogue was pretty basic/amateur. While I have been quite critical, I didn't mind this game. It managed to be sufficiently challenging and interesting enough in the short time it lasted. ===================== My Metroidvania Tier List (PC) (excluding Metroid & Castlevania titles) ===================== -Not an objective list, purely how much I enjoyed the games- S+ Aeterna Noctis | S Tier (Truly Special) Astalon: Tears of the Earth | Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom | Hollow Knight | S- Blasphemous 2 | Cathedral | A+ Afterimage | The Last Faith | A Tier (Amazing) Elderand | Ori and the Will of the Wisps | Doomblade^ | BioGun | Ender Magnolia | A- Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights | Depths of Sanity | F.I.S.T. | Pampas & Selene | B+ Blast Brigade | Haak | Turbo Kid | Nine Sols | Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus | Biomorph | B Tier (Really Enjoyed) Animal Well | Alwa’s Legacy | Steamworld Dig 2 | Islets | Blasphemous | After Death | Pronty^ | Mortal Manor* | Escape From Tethys | Outbuddies DX* | Monster Sanctuary | Elliot Quest | Rebel Transmute | Moonlight Pulse | Environmental Station Alpha | B- Haiku, the Robot | The Mobius Machine | Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown | Ultros | Voidwrought | C+ (Fun) Lone Fungus | Ghost Song | Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night | Kunai | Kingdom Shell | Axiom Verge | Treasure Adventure Game | Infernax | Flipwitch# | Momodora 4 | Momodora 5 | HunterX | HunterX: code name T | Curse of the Sea Rats | Gestalt | Alruna and the Necro-Industrialists | Super Roboy | Blade Chimera | C Tier (More or Less Enjoyed) The Throne | Plague of Yamorn* | Column on the Sea | 9 Years of Shadows | Jrago* | Laika: Aged through Blood | MF-01 Aerostrike^ | Xanthiom Zero | Carrion^ | Chasm | Wuppo | The Mummy Demastered | Catmaze | Death’s Gambit: Afterlife | Castle In The Clouds# | Omega Strike | Aggelos | Midnight Castle Succubus# | Overbowed | Rabi-Ribi | TEVI | Far Star | Sheepo | Elephantasy | Mars 2120 | Skelethrone: The CoE* | Unworthy | Hijiri in the Succubus Castle# | Somber Echoes | C- (Meh) Ato | Momibosu | Axiom Verge 2 | EldritchVania | Beholgar* | Astronite | Cookie Cutter | Rusted Moss^ | Grime | Moonscars | The Messenger | Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth | Iconoclasts | MindSeize | Ebenezer and the Invisible World | Luna’s Light* | Tales of Kenzera: Zau | Gato Roboto | Itorah* | Dystobel* | LoL: Convergence | Janosik 2: Prologue | The Knight Witch | Kong: Survivor Instinct | Stardust Demon | Vyanka’s Memories* | Arzette | D Tier (Liked some things but ultimately did not enjoy) Castle In The Darkness | Alwa’s Awakening | Nitrojet* | RIN: The Last Child* | Pharaoh Rebirth | Yoku’s Island Express | Vigil: Longest Night | Guacamelee! 2 | Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse | Phoenotopia: Awakening | Insect Adventure* | Clunky Hero* | Goo Keeper* | Headlander | Strider | Minoria* | Souldiers | Bone Appetit | The Witch & the 66 Mushrooms | Transiruby | Destroy Space Aliens | La-Mulana | Rex Rocket | Guacamelee! | 8Doors | Timespinner | Super Panda Adventures | Omega Mouse Zero* | Ataraxie* | You are Peter Shorts | Unepic | The Ramsey | Batbarian | Imp of the Sun | Awaken: Astral Blade* | Redo! | Goodboy Galaxy | E-Tier (Really disliked) Worldless | Garm Ruins^ | Venture to the Vile | Aestik* | Windmills* | Sheba: A New Dawn* | Ex Vitro | Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap | Dandara | The Weird Dream | Mystik Belle | Noreya: The Gold Project* | Vernal Edge | The Devil Within: Satgat | Ginsha | Iron Diamond* | Blaster Master Zero | Medusa* | Lost Ruins | Sundered | Salt & Sanctuary | Valdis Story | Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet | Touhou Luna Nights | Chronicles of Teddy | B.I.O.T.A. | Chronicles of 2 Heroes | Anima Flux | Shadow Complex | Aquaria | Traps N’ Gemstones | Nyaruru Fishy Fight | Ghost 1.0 | WarriOrb | Feudal Alloy | Apotheon | Gungirl 2 | Bad Pad* | Chakana* | Lootbox Lyfe | Slavania* | Angel’s Gear* | Fearmonium | Magicians & Looters* | Tres-Bashers* | Arcane Assembly^ | Aeternum Vale* | Troupe* | Skautfold: Usurper | Silver Axe - The Honest Elf* | Song of the Deep | Unbound: Worlds Apart | Frontier Hunter: Erza’s* | Redshot* | 3000th Duel | Songbird Symphony | Faunamorph* | Joshua’s Legs | Dust: An Elysian Tale | =================== ^ = Mouse & Keyboard are STRONGLY advised. * = Very raw indie or contains some jank or lack of polish. ---------------------------------
This game has incredibly janky combat that makes the game artificially difficult. Your melee range is barely a few pixels further than your own hitbox which is absolute thrash for a game with contact damage. Add to that the fact that you have NO i-frames and only have 4 health (3 plus one potion to heal a single hitpoint), and you're left with pretty much no margin for error. I did not even make it to the first boss because the regular combat was already so frustrating that i can't imagine the bosses to fare much better. Other reviews have indicated that the bosses are quite tough so i'm not gonna trudge through all of this to be met with frustrating bosses. In fact the whole game is super basic and generally not worthwhile the effort. The pixel art is good looking but uninspired, the music is decent but not memorable and the writing/dialogue is very bad. Not only in terms of spelling and gramar but also just in how plainly edgy the characters are. This game really has nothing going for it except for the core bow mechanic, but that feels finicky to pull off since the hitbox is tiny and so are enemies. At least the game is cheap and short, so if you can deal with very wonky combat and are up for a challenge then this may be for you, otherwise you'd best look elsewhere. I'm requesting a refund on this one.
POSITIVE POINTS:
- The pixelated art style adds a nostalgic feel to the game. - The game combines exploration of diverse biomes with challenging combat against bosses and menacing creatures. - Luna uses a bow with different types of arrows, each suited to solve different tasks, which gives it a very good strategic touch.
NEGATIVE POINTS:
- Luna's animations are a bit clunky. - The melee attack can be difficult to execute without taking damage due to its short range. - Sometimes flying enemies come in before she has a proper chance to react to them.
CONCLUSIONS:
Luna's Light is a metroidvania that combines an intriguing story with a charming art style. Despite some aspects that could be improved, the game offers an exciting gameplay experience with its focus on exploration and combat.
EVALUATION:
7,5/10. It's a game that shines with its focus on adventure and challenge. If you're looking for a good pixel art adventure that immerses you in a world full of challenge and discovery, Luna's Light is a good choice.
Movement is terrible. Aiming is awkward. You can hold down the fire button to slow down time (for about half a second) but it's still too hard to tell where your arrows will go. Sometimes flying enemies will come in before I have a proper chance to react to them. Other times my arrows will pass right through them without hitting them. I tried 2 bosses. They were both designed like ♥♥♥♥. The jump button doesn't take you high or far enough to avoid them (no dodge button either from the looks of it), so before I know it I've already taken 3 hits and died. I'm done.
Much like an archer you need to be:

Patience
Be ok with failure (as there are a few times you will die and go all the way back to the savepoint and try again)
Have good eyesight (some enemies can really sneak up on you)
Be good at conserving your archer (sometimes it's a practical to just melee the enemies instead when you have the chance)
Being some or none of these then I doubt you will have fun with this game. It's pretty niche due to the gameplay you have to adapt. I found it is best to hold down your arrow and pre-shot so it pierces all the enemies if you know where the enemies are. And to bait out some attacks because some enemies can attack so quickly you might not respond on time. I'm only saying this because I know not everyone likes this type of playstyle, but if you think you're not one of them I say it wouldn't hurt to give this game a try.
