I will admit, I didn't play this game for long before deciding to refund it. However, if your movement at its most basic, fundamental level drives me up the wall, then piling more things on top of that, however much it may MASK that problem, still doesn't fix the fact that the main mechanic, boiled down to its base, drives me up the wall. Judging from the achievements of the game, it prides itself on the fact that you will die a lot. But this is no Dark Souls 1, my friends, and I suffered 50 deaths in 26 minutes, and not one of those deaths made me laugh and say to myself 'yeah, that was just me being stupid.' Instead, 90% of them came from overshooting my target and falling straight into instant death water. The ball you play as simply doesn't seem to be able to change directions midair half the time, or... something else I can't make out. Whatever the issue might be (assuming it isn't just me being dumb and bad with my hands), the game seems to have been built without a desire to really accommodate for it, leading me to ultimately feel the basic run and jump of the game is equally too slow and too slippery. That being said, I did still find appreciation in the fact that you can't even jump or even move to begin with. I am the type of person who really enjoys starting out with little to nothing at my disposal and clawing my way up. Even if my limited understanding of the story tells me that it makes literally no sense for the character to start the game in the way that they do, but, again, I didn't exactly get far.

While there's no combat, the progression and feel of Lootbox Lyfe definitely puts it squarely in the genre.
Curator Review
Lootbox Lyfe is a treasure trove of platforming challenges, with plenty of options to accommodate players of all skill levels. It can be punishingly brutal, or you can just enjoy relaxing exploration. Click here for the Full Review
This was a good game. Completed the game in about 4hours and got 90% completion. It had and relaxing pace and great sense of discovery, great music too. SPOILERS BELOW The only issues i had was the end challenge some jumps had to be almost too perfect and the clones would some times cluster up that your next try was almost impossible. Maybe better with resetting everything like in Celeste when you die instead of having multiple clones in the way.. The other thing was the crystal mechanic, dont know if it was user error but it felt like it was hit or miss sometimes. Very little bugs, some clipping thru walls and getting stuck in the ground but this was easily fix with the reset area option. Hopefully there will be a sequel or that the developer makes a new platform/metroidvania :D
A violation of pixel graphics, feels bad to play, lacks basic options. First time I ever refunded a game on Steam. Don't want this in my library, lol.
Quick Score: 3/5 Notes: -Banger Soundtrack -Interesting world -Decent visuals -Movement is unique, though a bit clunky at times. -Level design isn't the best or all that interesting, but it is decent enough -Metroidvania, but you are given a very rough map, which makes navigation and looking for collectibles a bit annoying -Difficulty is on the lower end
Really fun, enjoyable game in the platforming-focused metroidvania subgenre which is pretty rare. The music is nice, the graphics are beautiful, and the story is really well integrated into the game world with tons of environmental storytelling plus cutscenes to find here and there. The difficulty is pretty tough at parts but always feels fair and balanced, which means my few moments of rage were well worth it. But most importantly for a game that focuses so heavily on platforming, this game has really strong controls that are relatively easy to get used to but hard to master and can be extremely precise. It really makes it feel like you can fly through the game world once you get all the upgrades. Add on the tons of customization options for the character, plus collectables to find throughout the world, and it never gets boring. All in all it's a really charming game, and for the price it should be a no-brainer IMO.
Okay for starters, i composed the music for this game so that is something i am putting aside for this review, erhm. To describe Lootbox Lyfe in one word imo is fun! It is curious, it is addicting and very platform heavy as the most of the reviewers here has mentioned. For me Lootbox Lyfe has a lot of the SNES-era feel to it overall. I died a bunch of times, and that is kind of meant to happen too. Nothing is more satisfying than when you feel overpowered because of skills after learning the gameplay and abilities that you pick up. That is one thing i like about metroidvanias, this is however different in that aspect, since it lacks enemies, and it lacks "weapons". This is a long metroidvania platforming trial of sorts! For me at least. The story is about making fun of the whole Lootbox thing and it has it's charm, it gave some depth to the story and makes the things you do more understandable. There are bugs, of course. But this did not take the joy out of the gameplay, heck sometimes it was even fun to discover some bugs, like in the old good days. Some of you know what i am talking about. With that said, i thank you for creating this game, and letting me be a part of it as a composer. //K
Very amazing game. Simple, addictive and fun. I've played for a few minutes before my two kids try to put me out of the keyboard. A nice one to have, for all ages at a very good launch price.
Fun and charming little metroidvania game with cool movement mechanics.
