maybe more of the illusion of depth than actual depth but still a cool game for the price point
great game and ost

Generally the faux-retro aesthetic for indie games is more of turn-off for me than anything and was why I bounced off this game originally, but coming back to it now, looking at the mechanical design of the game, this is a deceptively clever and unique little deckbuilder/roguelike/autobattler... thing. One moment that made it click for me was as I was setting out on an expedition and began actually strategizing about which cards to choose. First, the game permits you to choose a range of card types, from 7 to 13, to draw during an expedition. I had been maxing that out to see more stuff in each run, but then I realized that in any other card game, I want as little variance as possible in order to build a strategy around. So I made the difficult pick of a mere 7 cards. As I did, I thought about one card in particular which spawns ranged enemies which I had found annoying to deal with. But -then- I realized that I could mitigate their ranged effect by more thoughtful placement (just don't place them around fights where they would attack from range), and still reap the same good loot from them. And I effectively made the same decision for another card that automatically adds one powerful enemy to any battles that happen within range of where it's placed. Once I strategized how to isolate the stronger enemies, I started getting much better loot and more experience which in turn made the boss fight a breeze. And yes, there's also a meta-progression system where you spend resources gained each run on permanent unlocks and buffs. There is also a manual in-game that tells you where different resources come from so you can plan runs to get the resources you want. In summary, it's a game that rewards careful attention to the strategic options it places at your disposal with a far faster and easier character progression than if you try to brute-force it, though brute force is also an option. Even if you flub an expedition, you still get -some- resources for the meta-progression.
The game is so engaging, but beyond that, the pixel art has perfect grimdark vibes!
