The game may be good, don't know, and after my initial first 2 tries to get it it run properly I don't care. It was quite literally unplayable. Frame rate of under 10 FPS consistently. UI also is horrific. No polish whatsoever. Standard windows style mouse cursor doesn't even disappear during the game. When it loads with made in Unity (i.e FREE version), that should have been a clue that this has little investment (despite being bloomin' kickstarted). Admittedly that was for the board game version, but if this is it's advertising pitch it's not a good one at all. It's ugly as sin also (apart from the character portraits to be fair, they are well done). Graphics aren't important to me usually but when it runs so poorly, I'd at least expect high quality anything to justify it. Maybe it will get better in the future ? I won't be expecting it. Nor waiting to find out.

Modeled estimate over time.
Hours played at review time, across 24 reviews with recorded playtime.
Not user friendly. There are no tooltips, no tutorial, nothing telling you what anything is.
Great game! Wish certain features they offered actually worked.
Average game runs about 15-20 minutes. Nice graphics, good ambient sounds and effects.

"LocoMotives" is what looks and plays like a mobile app, a boardgame-esque experience backed by cards where you lightweight tycoon against other players (there are none) and build out a railway, fight off outlaws, and uninstall fast because the quality here is through the floor. There's a notable lack of polish as it feels like this got mostly developed then rushed out, poor optimisation and a lot of work seems to be missing on the UI. It's also notable that the game intro is done as an asset flip as the developer stole a bunch of assets from Synty's Polygon Western asset pack and tried to pass that off as their own work. On the topic of visuals, the weak looking 2D retro assets seem like they'd be more at home in a browser game or a mobile app. 3D graphics accelerators hit the mainstream of PC gaming in the mid 1990's with cards like the ATI Rage and Voodoo3D, there's no excuse for such poor 2D graphics in 2026. That alone is enough to disqualify this for recommendation. This game is fairly dated at 7 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 130 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB shows this peaked at only 6 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? What's the verdict? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
You either reconcile yourself to it, or you light a shuck out of these parts and hope nothing follows.
