Why, oh why, did we get stuck with the iOS port?
LIT is an okay puzzler with well-established mechanics. Each room gradually ramps up the difficulty to the point when trial-and-error is the best way to solve everything. The 8-button control scheme keeps things simple, yet is better suited to a controller than a keyboard. Unfortunately, that's all the good I could glean. The background music is loud and the story is barebones. For those of you unaware, LIT originally debuted as a WiiWare game. I, sadly, didn't get to play it before the Wii store was closed for good, but my old Nintendo mags and YouTube have been great aids. Instead of a 2D puzzler with a cutesy art style, it was in 3D with more realistic visuals. And that's what it has over the iOS version: better visuals and a better horror atmosphere. Instead of grey tiles, there were writhing masses of shadow with things scuttling about in them that wouldn't hesitate to drag you in if you took one wrong step. The monsters were a lot more unique than the same generic sprite, showing what would happen if the shadows consume you like they did the staff and other students. It also had more intriguing mechanics: a flashlight to illuminate parts of the room to see what's hidden in the shadows. An electricity meter to ensure you don't abuse the TVs and computers, along with motion-sensing cameras which punish heavy electricity use. There were boss battles. What's more, you would occasionally get phone calls from Rachael as she struggles to survive as a nice atmospheric bonus. In short, we're stuck with the inferior version of the game. If anyone has a WiiU, then you may have a chance to (re)download the original.
I like it, it's pretty much what the trailer shows, a pure puzzle game which also give you optional targets/goals as far as steps taken and time spent with the challenge. The puzzle's been fairly logical, I did get a little stuck on one as I missed how a couple of TV's were connected as far as their lights went.... You don't need to aim with the slingshot, if you play with a controller the D-pad is a better option as it's grid based movement and the items are always in the same place, lightbulb's always A on a Microsoft style controller for instance. I do like this quite a lot, not sure if I'll ever go for a speedrun of the level to try to beat the target, but I may....I'll have to see what I do with that, this far I have no complaints at all... (had I used the KBD I prob. would have had something to say about not giving the option to rebind keys as it doesn't allow that so if that's what you'll be using check the trailer it shows the keybinding, is a major kudos to the dev. for showing that)
The game may not be worth it's $6 base price tag but if you like puzzle games it is worth getting. This is based on the iOS/Mobile ver. and the conversion to PC was well done IMO. The visuals look clean and while there aren't many animations, the color palette used is good too. Puzzles mainly utilize you creating paths using items to shine light on squares to move on. Completing all stages below the stated par limit will result in earning the true ending. Def. grab it should it ever go for cheap or appear in a bundle in the future.
Story
LIT is one of those "short and sweet" variety of games. Its slew of levels is somewhat limited, considering how reasonably adept players can surpass all 16 levels with LITtle (lol pun) trouble, and especially with the $6 price tag in regard. With hardly an iota of doubt, it is short. But that's when the 'sweet' comes in. The playable characters, menus, entities, and hazards are all fluidly animated to the high standards of WayForward. And not surprisingly, the small cast of characters are young and adorable, in spite of the game's dark and eerie tone. The sound design is also worth noting. Windows, lamps, and other interactable instruments of puzzle solving sound as expected. The music, while not as memorable as the catchy soundtracks featured in the iconic Shantae franchise, fits the general mood of despair and darkness like a glove. Conclusion: Fairly small for the proportionally high price tag, but manages to be consistently beautiful without compromise. Interested users who are on a budget may want to consider waiting for a sale.
Gameplay Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uq8RZJLm8PA If I remember correctly this game started off on the Wii. Then it was remastered for iOS and Android. Then, thanks to GamePump, brought to the PC. If what I remember is correct then this is a port. However, this is a well-made port of the remastered version. The premise is simple: get to the exit by lighting your path and avoiding the darkness and the baddies along the way. Your tools are baseballs, lightbulbs, remote controls, and fire. Fire is used as a trap for the baddies(Of course you can walk into it if you want to experiment starting the room over.) When I played this I had no problem with the controls. You also have the option to use a controller or your keyboard. I used the keyboard and it certainly works well. I do, however, have a pet peeve. No. Windowed. Option. There isn't even any options, either. If you want to change the volume you will have to do it from your sound mixer. But that's my problem. And it isn't a big one either. This game is good and I certainly had fun playing it. tl;dr: Game plays great for a port(iirc). Has the option of using a controller or a keyboard. No other configuration options. I recommend it!
This is very obviously a nearly exact rip from an IOS game and put on steam. Controller did NOT work for me no matter what I did, but the keyboard controls were fine. It's really weird that it doesn't have mouse controls, considering it's a very simple mobile game control wise. What really kills this game(besides a six dollar price point!) is that the main character is absolutely, infuriatingly slow and takes forever to get anywhere
Lit is cute but very short puzzle game based around using light to create pathways. It's fun for how long it lasts, but its short length left me in want for more.
Got this for "free" as an apology from gamepump for cancelling their service. Took me 63 minutes to 100% it (16 puzzles, par-time and steps), very short. Outside the length, this is a nice quick puzzle game, very atmospheric music that sets up a "horror" vibe. The game revolves lighting up parts of the room using TVs and lightbulbs and using them to reach the other door in the room. Not worth the current asking price. Use your own judgment, I already told you the contents of the game, 16 puzzles and 63 minutes to 100% it. Thumbs up just cause it was a quality 63 minutes. I know it says I spent more than 63 minutes, I had to idle to get the last trading card. I know, right? Game is so short I had to idle to get all the card drops. This should just be a free game and try to get as much money on steam backgrounds since Matt Bozon has nice art
