I really would love to love this game, but I simply can't bring myself to in its current form. Despite that, I will provide some of the pros and cons of this game. Let's start first on a positive note: + Good concept and would be great for people who prefer an exploratory method of language learning. + Automatically saves words into a list in order of how they are learned. + Provides written and spoken pronunciation guides Now on to the bad news: - Tank controls: No game in the modern age needs tank controls and if they did, they had better run much more smoothly than this. Moving the character is like a slip and slide that no one asked for. - Spoken guides are extremely quiet and the sound quality is lacking. I would also appreciate an option to slow down the audio to better hear how new words are spoken. Also, when selecting a word in the dictionary, the spoken guide occasionally does not match what is written. - Clipping happens way too often. - fixed camera angles makes it hard to see where you are going and/or the camera clips through NPCs when engaged in a conversation. Overall, I would not recommend this game to anyone as it is now. I am hoping that the developers will continue to improve it as time goes one, because I do like the concept and it would be a fun and unique way to learn a language on ones own. Hopefully, we can see something a little more polished in the future.

Re-Review: I chose a language that I have really no clue of whatsoever, chinese. It is really a different approach than I am used to, I knew what I was getting into, but the scenario still left me feeling helpless at the beginning. I can't say that I feel the game to be boring or upsetting, it's actually rather enjoyable, especially when I come across some musicians and watch the character sway with the music. Character is now mobile and doesn't get stuck. Everywhere the guiding hare goes, the player character can go, too. Controls are now how I am used to them (and in relation to the camera). Dialogs don't have any bugs I notice anymore and after playing for some time I now realised, that the words aren't just asked for once each, but rather I am getting asked about words that I've already solved or not, too, which is great. Also I find it great that I learned enough to even realize this, I have a long way to go, but I notice progress. Speaking of progress, the city seems simple, but I do get the feeling of progress. The differences of a new area to what I have seen until then are clear and I see more of the town the further I follow the hare. I only play half an hour a day, and I think that's an okay amount for me. The game starts quickly and sets you where you left off, though I am unsure if there is a feature for multiple save files. It's just been some days, but many bugs, that I stumbled across initially, already have been fixed, it's just great seeing this game improve.
Допустим, мне персонаж говорит фразу "Never seen a talking bird?" Пример: предложение "How are you?"
It's seems like there are no updates/ fixes that are going to be happening in the future with this game (since there hasnt been any since 2018), which is sad cause I really do love the concept. I was just starting to get into it, but suddenly the dialog boxes started being blank in the english- japanese mode. Then that means I'm just clicking and guessing while getting no context :/ If this game were to ever get these bugs fixed I'd put so many more hours into it but now I'm just embarrassed I didn't look at reviews before puchasing.
First of all I've met bug which makes it unplayable. The audio and text for the chinese disappears, this has happened thrice and the only way to get it back that I've found is to start a new game file, which means starting all over again. Still without this bug I wouldn't reccommend this game for severeal reasons: 1. There is sooo much walking, without anything happening. You are just walking. This might have been okay if you could walk at a reasonable speed. 2. To find your way you have gotten a guide, which walks even slower than yourself. Give me map, please! Or have people arond town direct you throught the language you are learning. 3. You replay the same stuff over and over again to learn a couple new words per sentence the people you are talking to are saying. Which by my estimates (I haven't got chance to test because of the bugs) means I have to go through the same slow-walking "adventure" at least ten times to be able to find out what they are saying. 4. There is no way to mark words you already know as learned so this makes the progresss feel even slower. Some rounds I only get words I know. 5. There is little use of the environment to give context to what is being said. The true strength of immersion is that you hear and read something and can connect it to things around you. This is barely used from what I can see. Huge fruits placed around town which you can click on to get the word in your target langauge does not count. 6. Little interaction. Go pick up something from someone quests would be great to learn nouns instead of the humungous fruits and berries everywhere. Having to actually answer questions and in some way insulting someone or making a friend or getting a confused look would help. Just anything other than a flashcard-like walking simulator. The artwork is cute, the concept is OK, but isn't that well executed. The learning more and more to get the full context is a good idea and feels kind of like a mystery, but when you have to do the really slow walk through the entire town before you get anything more of the story it just gets annoying. Without the bugs I would have thought the game was oky-ish, but with them it just seems like rip-off and not worth it at all. I would not reccomend this game, it is not fun, it will not teach you much more than flashcards can do and it takes a really long time since you have to walk behind the slowest guide ever. I would have liked to get throught he story enough time to understand it, but I'm guessing I'm not missing much.
Lingotopia is Kickstarter backed language learning game, developed by the one-man development “team” of Tristan Dahl. You play a girl stranded on some island, where no-one speaks your native language. You need to pick up clues and learn words to decipher what everyone is saying to, presumably, get home, rather than the somewhat more obvious route of hacking down some trees and building a boat… There is no title screen as such, so when starting the game, you are presented with a screen asking for your native language and the language you would like to learn. There are 6 official languages for which dialogue for all characters and objects should be available, and many community languages where dialogue is limited. Once you have chosen the language you would like to learn, you start the game. Graphics are very polygon-looking with character and object detail varying wildly – there are many objects that are textured and many that aren’t. Camera control is limited – you can rotate it, but not adjust the height. Your character moves backwards and forwards fairly slowly, in the direction it is facing, which in tight spots can be bothersome. You can’t run or jump. There is little to tell you what to do (or where to go) – clicking on some items brings it to the fore and some speaker (apparently a native of the language you are learning) pronounces the name of the item. The quality of these recordings varies wildly – some are clear, and some are muddy. You will also come across people with squares over their heads. Clicking on these initiates a conversation. Initiating a conversation means either working out what words or a bunch of hieroglyphics mean. These conversations give clues to help you on your mission, and this is where problems start. First off, you are immediately thrown into the deep end with having to work out what words mean, so you either end up making educated guesses or just plain guessing, and working out what the hieroglyphics mean can sometimes be tricky. As you go around the town and click on objects, you add the word for that object to your dictionary, which you can view and listen to at any time, aiding in future conversations. Whilst the program hasn’t crashed, it isn’t bug free. You can walk into the sea, but only by doing so backwards, and your character has a tendency to lean to one side after talking to the first character you meet. Another problem is that at a certain place you can start a conversation, but can’t do anything, forcing you to exit the program and restart just before this conversation. Some speech bubble text formatting is dodgy at best, although probably depends on the chosen learning language. Music isn’t currently present, and aside from people speaking, there are no sound effects besides your character walking. Overall, it’s a nice idea, but let down by very poor execution. Currently it’s not worth getting, as there is just nothing to really help learn a language, and it’s not exciting enough to maintain interest for long.# Pros: + The graphics are nice-ish + An interesting idea – just let down by poor execution + A lot to see, if you really want to explore Cons: - Some native speakers are clearer than others - A fair few bugs that cause problems, even if they don’t crash the program - No music currently and sound effects are limit - Some languages exhibit poor layout in speech bubbles - It would have been far better to start from something simple and then work upwards from there - Other “unique” languages like Welsh, Irish, Cornish, Basque and Catalan are currently missing Gameplay: 3/5 Graphics: 3/5 Sound and music: 2/5 Controls: 2/5 Replay value: 2/5 Story: 3/5 Verdict: 2/5 No doubt a lot of time and effort has gone into this program, for which, if nothing else, the developer should be commended. However, it lacks both substance and use at the moment, which, in the current state makes it hard to recommend. Only if the developer seriously upgrades the program would it become something worth trying.
This game is amazing - from concept to actual gameplay, the language learning community lacks interactive and engaging methods of teaching such as what this game provides. As is to be expected with release day, there are some minor bugs as mentioned by other reviewers. However, I found that none of them truly affected my gameplay and I still learned tons and had tons of fun in my first hour. The developer is also very active and helpful, and has been pushing out daily updates to fix bugs, so it's only a matter of time before things are smooth. Many people complained about the steering and controls; theyre not normal by any means but theyre not really that bad. Turning does feel like you're driving a tank but you get used to it pretty quickly. Also, don't worry about the "required" graphics card. I bought and played the game on a toaster and had great fps the whole time. I highly recommend the game, it is a lovely experience and incredibly helpful for learning a language.
I paid $20 for this game. I cannot believe I did that. This is at most a $5 game. Absolutely rife with bugs. Gameplay is very boring and feels like an amateur high school project. Many flaws that hinder gameplay and enjoyment and unless you feel like joining the discord to pester a defensive dev to fix them, they will most likely not be fixed, since the dev has stated that he is not interested in updating the game any further. Having played the game in both a language I know and a language I don't, I feel like beginners would learn very little of their target language, and certainly not enough to 'supplement' their language learning journey. Clearly the dev did little research into language learning. Absolute scam.
I want to leave a review here because many people gave bad review because of the bugs in this game. I can definitely say that a lot of those bugs are fixed quickly by the devs and by version 1.02 it is playable for me. There are some more things I would like to be changed by the devs such as the movement controls which feel like driving a tank, but I'm sure the devs are working on it and I will update this review when the devs changed the movement system. As for learning the language? Yeah, it really feels like you are dumped in a strange environment with a strange language that you must learn to understand what the people are saying. Really helps with the immersion problem I've been having when learning a new language. I managed to learn extremely quickly using this game, so I say this game really achieves the goal of helping people learn a new language. It is rare seeing a language learning game like this in Steam, other than Influent as far as I know, but it's good that we're having more of these games. I am sure the devs will quickly fix the bugs and the controls in time, so if you're reading this devs, please don't get discouraged by the bad reviews, okay? Oh and thank you for making this game, it really helps my language learning!
