If nothing else convinces you to try this game and support them, this line should be enough. For a cheap price, you get a decent top down cyberpunk racing game with simple controls and is actually rather fun to play as well. The game is in Early Access currently but has a good amount of content. At its core, Light Rider is a single-player racing game where you take advantages of a special ability to shift between the red and blue spectra in order to achieve victory. Of course your goal is win each race, as with pretty much all racing games. The different spectra have accompanying track differences, and thus you can emerge victorious by using shortcuts between the two, avoiding obstacles, difficult corners, glitch patches, turrets that shoot homing missles at your vehicle, etc. The controls are simple, you play with the mouse and keyboard. Your mouse changes your direction based on the relative location of the mouse to your racing vehicle sprite. You accelerate with W key and you can change between spectra with the E or Spacebar key. These controls work well because the game is top down, and you can focus on the game and make sure you are managing your vehicle's inertia and momentum shifts as you try to turn. Of course changing the spectrum in unique locations on each map as well. The game features a decent number of races along with six vehicles total. Once you have completed a race, you unlock Battle Mode for that track, in which it is still the same race, but you and your opponents can pick up weapons to try to destroy each other, etc. Each vehicle has three basic stats: Top Speed, Acceleration, and Turning. You unlock everything but your starting vehicle by using credits that you earn through your previous races. These credits can also be used to purchase upgrades for the individual vehicles in the Garage as well. This is a pretty fun top down racer with simple controls and a decent amount of content. I would recommend it on its merits alone. But please also consider trying out the game to support these developers on the autistic spectrum and the non-profit organization as well. The planned price increase when it comes out of Early Access is clearly stated on the store page: “We plan to raise the price from a dollar to roughly the cost of a cup of coffee.”
I received the product for free.
Light Rider is a student project from the charity nonPareil Institute in Texas, specialising in education programs for developmentally inhibited adults. Certainly, a noble cause. It's an Unreal Engine minimalist/neon 2D top down racing game with a gimmick... you can "switch" between different tracks by hitting the space bar when you drive through special zones, providing a little more strategy than most racing games have. On pure technical basis this doesn't pass, it doesn't launch properly. The manifest isn't correct, the game searches for an executable which is missing. You can launch the game by browsing the game folder and finding the right executable, but this is a workaround that gamers should not have to deal with. If you do get the game to run, you'll find locked resolution and locked controls, which can't be customised. This may make the game inaccessible for some gamers with disabilities, and drops this below acceptable standards for a modern PC. As a student project, this is being given away freely, which is a noble gesture from a quality educational institution. While this specific game has some flaws which make it unrecommendable, I think the developers have done a great job here and they show tremendous promise as developers. I hope they go on to do bigger and better things.
Quite cool for a free game!
Simple, easy to use, and engaging enough controls, nice music, and good visuals. There are some bugs I noticed and personal thoughts about how the game can be improved. For bugs/what seem to be bugs: 3rd race has some strange sound effects when near the glitch/hazard spots and I'm not sure if they are intentional. After beating the 3rd race you can't move the map in any way to select the 4th race though you can see that it is unlocked. Second race's map doesn't match up with the course. One of the tutorial messages had a few letters cut off by the edge of the screen. For personal thoughts on improvement: Vehicles stats are shown as plain bars yet upgrades show an increase in the bar as well as a number associated with the upgrade, it'd be nice to see numbers for the stats in general though this is probably just personal preference. Seperating the upgrade parts into different menus or scrolling sections would be nice since once you get to the crossed out unavailable parts players may think that everything after that will be locked too. It does still show promise as a game premise though and I look forward to seeing how it comes along.
