A game about boredom and self-pity. It's about myself mostly. You walk around and press the 'interact' button. Sorry for making this.

thank you dearly for sharing
Couldn't play the game myself because it won't load past the first loading screen, but I still managed to experience the game through a youtube video. 100% recommended
My current mood reminded me of this game.

"Life Tastes Like Cardboard" is more e-book than game, an autobiographical piece about a furry with emotional/mental health problems. Intended to be a "dark" and "edgy" teenager goth poetry piece designed for furries, instead this is "cringe" and "more cringe". What do you do in the game? Not much in the way of gameplay, it's mostly just clicking through incredibly cringey teenager goth poetry tier writing that, instead of improving your mental health, may worsen it (you deserve better than this kind of amateur garbage). Trying to address serious issues such as mental and emotional health through the medium of video games is misguided and can be harmful. While it's plausible to suggest the intention was noble, this can do more harm than good. The "developer" here is not a professional in areas of mental health and social problems, and when they use video games to pretend they are, this is not only utterly ineffective, it can be harmful. It's my opinion that it's improper to use video games to address mental health issues. Apart from the harm such hamfisted attempts at addressing social problems can cause, this offers zero benefit to PC gamers. People suffering from health issues or other social problems should seek out professional help rather than going to crap shovelware video games attempting to get attention/fame by exploiting such problems for their own benefit, as is the case here. So, it's hard to describe this as a game, the focus of the product is more like that of an e-book/visual novel, there's only minor, shallow and uninteresting gameplay elements. The crux of this is to push some very low quality, badly done fan-fiction tier writing, where we see once more a developer fail to understand the importance of "Show, don't tell", and for whatever reason, weren't able to convey their narrative through gameplay, giving us endless lines of badly written e-book text instead. My gaming rig is not a kindle. In terms of visuals, this features really godawful MS-Paint tier "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. The deplorably bad visuals here come across as an insult to gamers. This game is fairly dated at 6 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. This was made with the godawful "GameMaker Studio" construction kit/toolset, which is popular amongst amateur developers because it handholds you through making really crap 2D games that you can publish for $100 on Steam Direct. This lets you pat yourself on the back for pretending to be a real game developer, which explains why GameMaker Studio is responsible for so much ignored garbage on Steam. GameMaker Studio has never really been used to make a truly successful game, but that doesn't stop people from trying and failing. It's a particularly bad game engine that can only be used for making low quality 2D products. Like this. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, as the old saying goes. Another reason this particular game wasn't successful. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 7 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not on a bet. This might be "free", but I still feel like I got ripped off.
I'm not much into doing reviews, but... this seriously DESERVES at least a brief one. - The game narrative is just so well executed that you get immersed immediately. - The history is very emotional and feels real. - The use of effects is just outstanding. - The soundtrack is simply on another level (check it out on BC!). - The art is amazing and delivered in many flavors cohesively. - The level design and details in general are awesome. - It has A TON of content being a free game. I recommend it desperately. PS: If you're not feeling well emotionally tho, I'd recommend putting off the game until you feel better. And, if its themes resonate with you, it may hit you severely! I REALLY MEAN IT. Simply beautiful, I can't believe this was free dude.
