I enjoyed my time with Leyline Chronicles. It contains some very nice battles, interesting characters, and a fun world to explore. There are a lot of QoL features like resource conversion, quest locations on the compass, and teleporting that keep the gameplay smooth and exciting, making me want to play more. The art style of the game is very appealing to me. It's colorful, bright, and vibrant, with different aesthetic enhancements to the weather, like snow, wind, leaves, and clouds, which was nice to see. The maps were well done and the Low sprites worked well for the battlers and human enemies. Animations for the skills are also nicely done and have a good flow to them. There might seem to be a lot going on at first, but once you get into the game, it fits together nicely. The battles were fun, and I enjoyed the bosses. Each had a unique strategy, which I appreciated, since it made me change up my strategy in order to win. The combo system takes a bit to get used to, and because there are so many characters, I still didn't know many of them by the end of the game. Fortunately, the QoL feature of letting us see each full combo with its costs made battles a lot easier, so I was very grateful for that. The economy in the game is also well done. Curative items aren't too expensive, and gold is given enough, but not too excessively that you have too much by the end. Items are vital in battle; especially those that cure conditions. I enjoyed the crafting feature. Upgrading weapons was always exciting, and I looked forward to see what new skills each character would get. It was also nice being able to convert essences in order to get extra ones, in order to upgrade. The music chosen was good. My favourite song is the boss theme when a Titan is fought. The final boss' song is also exceptionally epic. The characters are interesting. My favourites story-wise are Maiev, Jaskya, Leon, and Devan, and my favourites battle-wise are Maiev, Yun, and Devan. It was nice to see their stories more fleshed out as things went on, giving us more time to get to know them and how they interact with each other. A story like this, with such a focus on its characters, absolutely requires time invested in them, and it was nice to see this take place. The voice actors all did a great job, with Yun/Soraya's VA being my favourite. I had no idea one person played both characters, so that was a nice surprise, and proof of her talent. I also appreciate the game having a beast-race character in the party, since I like when games have characters that aren't just humans. The only thing I didn't really like about the game were the boulder puzzles. Some of the later ones are so outlandish and require a walkthrough to beat, which is unfair, especially when you've gotten so far on your own. An option to skip the puzzle after a number of resets would be nice, with perhaps the loss of a reward later in the dungeon as a compromise for doing so. I hope these puzzles are left out of the sequel, or at least relegated to optional areas that aren't necessary to the main plot. To conclude, Leyline Chronicles is a great first game from developer Dekaytainment, and I look forward to seeing the next adventure in the world of LLC.

TL;DR: Yes, recommended for those who fondly remember the golden age of SNES-era RPGs. Update: A Change of Heart At first, I was hard on this game. My initial frustrations with the mechanics and story led to a critical review, but after seeking feedback from my review community (there's not many of us) and hearing directly from the developer, Dekaytainment, my perspective shifted. Dekaytainment shared insights into the development process, revealing that this ambitious project was largely his solo endeavor (with support from a coder and artists). Seeing the heart, passion, and sheer dedication behind Leyline Chronicles—knowing it was built by one person—left me impressed. I also realized some of my critiques were shaped by my own playstyle and inexperience with JRPGs. Dekaytainment’s thoughtful response has inspired me to revisit the game and give it another shot with a fresh mindset. Leyline Chronicles: A Nostalgic Journey with Room to Grow If you're someone who fondly remembers the golden age of SNES-era JRPGs, Leyline Chronicles might just strike a chord with you. With its detail-oriented crafted pixel art and ambitious multi-perspective storytelling, it offers a throwback to simpler times while daring to incorporate modern twists. Though not without its rough edges, the heart and effort behind this game are clear, and that alone deserves recognition. A Nod to Classic JRPGs From the moment you boot up Leyline Chronicles, it’s evident that the developer poured their love for the genre into every corner of the game. The pixel art is charming, evoking a warm sense of nostalgia for fans of retro gaming. The combat system, with its a simplistic combo-based mechanics, adds a fresh layer of strategy to the traditional turn-based formula. The harp-laden soundtrack, while repetitive at times, sets a serene mood that complements the game’s retro aesthetic. Bold Storytelling with Potential The game ambitiously weaves a story through the perspectives of multiple protagonists. While the execution occasionally falters, the intention to craft a layered narrative of power, loss, and redemption is admirable. This is no small feat for a small team of one, and the effort to deliver an emotionally resonant tale is apparent. Players who enjoy piecing together lore and uncovering hidden threads will find satisfaction in the game’s subtler storytelling moments. Creative Systems with a Learning Curve Crafting, skill upgrades, and even a card mini-game ("Trouble Quad") shows Dekantainments creative ambition. While these systems could benefit from further refinement, they hint at the developer’s potential to innovate within the genre. For patient players willing to dive into the mechanics, there’s a rewarding depth waiting to be discovered. A Showcase of Determination Possibly built with RPGMaker, Leyline Chronicles proves that great ideas can shine regardless of the tools used. The detailed maps and thoughtful design elements demonstrate what a dedicated single developer can achieve on a smaller scale. This foundation shows incredible promise for future projects, where lessons learned from this title can pave the way for even greater success. Areas for Growth Of course, no game is perfect. The controls and menus could use streamlining to enhance the user experience, and some elements of the story feel disconnected. Yet, these are not insurmountable obstacles. They represent opportunities for Dekaytainment to refine their craft and deliver an even stronger product and story next step in their gaming venture. Final Thoughts While Leyline Chronicles may not resonate with every player, its charm and ambition are undeniable. For die-hard JRPG fans who appreciate the classics and have a soft spot for indie efforts, this game is worth adding to your collection. It’s a testament to what a single person can accomplish and a promising first step toward even greater projects. With feedback and refinement, there’s no doubt this team of one can create something truly special. Gem in the Making? Leyline Chronicles is a nod to the genre and a stepping stone for its creators. With heart, creativity, and a willingness to go further and develop more games like it (maybe with more members added to the team), this Dekaytainment has laid the groundwork for a bright future. After all, every great journey begins with a single step. Updated Score: When I first reviewed Leyline Chronicles, I gave it a 4.2/10. At the time, I focused on the game’s rough edges and didn’t fully appreciate the heart and ambition behind it. After learning that this was largely a solo project and hearing directly from Dekaytainment about the development process, I realized how much passion went into creating this game. Revisiting it with a fresh perspective, I can now see its charm and potential, and I’m happy to revise my score to 7/10. Recommended to all fans of this genre.
I like it great animations during battles I also like how the system is somewhat reminiscent of legend of legaia good job guys
A tightly constructed experience. Minimal need to grind, adequate amount of exploration in relation to the length of the main story. Game-play wise, Leyline Chronicles made great use of its central mechanics, keeping each battle interactive and dynamic. A small cast of characters with converging goals kept the pacing of the story steady without any meandering side plots. In my play-through testing the pre-release version, I had a lot of fun minmaxing the characters to crush the end bosses and also solving various puzzles. They provide ample challenge and also reward players for keeping a keen eye on the details of the mechanics.
It's a nice classic RPG like the ones that appeared on the SNES back in the day. You have to give the combat system a little time to figure it out, but once that's mastered, it's fun to put together the attacks. I really like the music and the general sound design, the voice actors seem motivated and do a good job. What I'm looking forward to, as I was a fan of the Triple Triad game, is the Trouble Quad inspired by it, but unfortunately I haven't gotten there yet. All in all, this solo project makes a very good impression in the first hour of the game.
Leyline Chronicles has an interesting stories with some unique characters. The combat is this one is different. It uses a combo type input to do the attacks you wish. You unlock new attacks and skills along the way which turn into some epic animations. After a while I suggest going to fast animations to speed battles up but enjoy them first :) Overall you are going to get 14+ hours of adventure out of this game. I believe you will enjoy it, so give it a try!
I personally do not like these kind of games simply because I like other genres but even I have to admit that this game is really fun but also quite challenging (this might be only the case for me because I generally do not play such games). The story is interesting and I like the fighting style of building your own attackchain by changing the order of buttons. All together it is fun and interesting and I enjoyed palying it. I can only recommend it.
Nice RPG. I tested the game before it was released. Had lots of fun with various versions. I feel like the developer managed to create a fun battle system and a story that makes you want to know what comes next.
