About
Letters from the War is a modern reimagining of text adventure games with a new gameplay based on postal censorship during Second World War. You will take the role of a newly hired employ of the Censorship Authority, where your actions will impact on the future of your nation.
Censor letters coming from soldiers at the front trying to understand what you need to do not to be fired. Censoring critical information you will get commendations from your boss, but the citizens who youl receive the letters will not understand their content. Leaving the information readable you will risk to be fired in order to let the people know what is really happening. What will you do? Will you find the correct balance?
The game takes place in Vitulia, a fictional country involved in Second World War. An authoritarian regime rules in Vitualia, which controls the masses thanks to its supervision on public information. Will you change that?
Experience a well-finished pixel art and an original soundtrack that will immerse you in the atmosphere of those years. Newspaper, letters and country spots were created, along with the music pieces, taking inspiration from first half of last century sources, but redesigned to enhance player experience.

I want to make it clear that I am grateful for every piece of anti-war media, especially in these troubled times. And the game does have a clear intent going for it, which is nice. So here's some constructive feedback from a former professional game dev: [olist] [*] Feedback for the day: The game does tell me if I did good or not, but it's a simple binary yes/no feedback. It doesn't tell me what I did wrong, thus making it hard to improve my performance. Was I right to censor only parts of a sentence or do I need to censor complete sentences? One step ahead would be to tell me what I missed or shouldn't have censored. Even better would be to precision up the feedback without giving up the solution. [*] Feedback for the overall situation: So far I've found two endings:
Being fired at some point
and
the ending where the country is overrun by the enemy
. Which seems to just directly go into the credits. The GAMEPLAY section of the store page hints at a third option, and I would have liked to have some guidance on how to get there. Maybe a civil unrest counter or something like that, just to understand how I'm doing. Maybe something like "There's a [low/medium/high] chance of unrest" at the beginning of every day, or besides the letters, or something like that, if you think that a flat-out gauge would be immersion breaking. The game makes it overall hard to understand what impact my decisions have and relate cause and effect of said actions. [*] Unskippable cutscenes/titles: As you probably unavoidably do multiple play-throughs trying different combinations, you'll end up with too much time in unskippable titles, which is quickly annoying. Some way to skip those and directly get to the action would be nice. [*] Repeat days: Having to repeat the whole game up to the day you failed quickly gets cumbersome. An option to repeat the last day before getting fired would have been nice. [/olist] Spoiler containing a way to cheese the game:
You can just censor everything. Not sure if this was an intentional design decision or not.
So, tl;dr: More feedback, less time-consuming stuff that doesn't add to the gameplay experience. Again, thank you, developers, for putting this game out there. We need more anti-war voices, now more than ever. I'm looking forward to your next title. Keep it up.

Letter from the War* is a game that deeply impressed me. It's really interesting to play and immerse oneself in such a significant historical context like World War II. It has been developed with a unique sensitivity, managing to convey intense emotions through its narrative and art, allowing us to step into the mind of someone living through the war. Every word of the soldier's letters is filled with emotions of fear, hope, and solitude. The music and imagery create an atmosphere that is both dark and full of hope, guiding the player through the most critical moments. The game truly makes you reflect on the value of life, especially in difficult times like the one being depicted. I feel I must congratulate the creators for their commitment and dedication in making such an emotional and meaningful work. Excellent job!
fun concept for a game, like a little basic and and not hand holdy but once you figure out the system, i got three slightly different endings, not sure, there may be more. For a free proof of concept , you're not wasting your time, interested on things from this dev.
I can't recommend a game that has such a glaring flaw in the game play loop. There is no feedback, and no real instructions. I failed the first two days and lost the game, and I don't know how close I was to being right or what.
Cool short free game
Very short but intense game. I truly raccomende it
A prima vista sembra un gioco veramente interessante, mi piace particolarmente la soundtrack di sottofondo, cosi cupa. Anche se attualmente non si riesce a proseguire ho grande fiducia nel vostro lavoro !
Papers, Please vibes. Yup.
