I wanted to like this, because it’s visually stunning, but I simply can’t recommend it, especially if you’ve a physical disability which affects your dexterity (as I do). I also have a problem with my sight caused by my thyroid and this, coupled with the fact that I’m playing on a MBP with a 16” screen means that I’m constantly following a video walkthrough because things are just too small. This is a sign of poor UI which, in turn, leads to a poor UX. I think I managed a grand total of THREE puzzles without being forced to resort to a walkthrough. Let’s start with the cube puzzle, as this was the first one for which I needed to use a walkthrough. I actually screen-recorded the relevant part of the video and played it back on my iPad frame-by-frame, and I STILL kept f**king up. It took me almost THREE HOURS to make it to the end of the 215-square path, several times I came close to giving up; my frustration could’ve been lessened somewhat by the inclusion of checkpoints so that, if I did make a mistake, I wasn’t forced to start from the beginning again. There are also eight puzzles on two columns which involve you having to recreate shapes on a 4x4 grid, because I’m playing on a laptop, the shapes were too small to see, so I had to copy them from the video - this is another example of poor UI, which the developer needs to address. Then there was the pedestals puzzle, where I found the pieces extremely hard to move, but the one which has made me give up completely is what the developer euphemistically describes as the “ring challenge” - it isn’t a “challenge”, it’s an exercise in frustration, especially if you have poor dexterity and are playing on a laptop. Attempting to guide the ring to the end of its undulating and winding path is IMPOSSIBLE when you’re holding down a trackpad and your hand keeps shaking. That was the breaking point for me, if ONLY there was a ‘skip’ button, or the developer had included a ‘would you like to skip this puzzle?’, dialogue which pops up after a certain number of failed attempts. The only disability the developer has catered to is colourblindness, there has been ZERO thought given to those people with physical disabilities. The frustrating thing is I’m now well beyond the time Steam allows for a refund, but at least it’s ‘only’ £8.50 down the drain, but that’s hardly Interested to hear what the developer has to say and whether they’ll think about implementing my recommendations, so that I can finish the game.
What a surprise! I had no idea that Leaves 3 was being developed after all these years. Did anyone even know about this? I don’t understand why the developers didn’t announce it anywhere these days, but hey, I found it anyway. What can I say to those who don’t know Leaves: It’s pure puzzle after puzzle, and it’s still pretty hard and doesn’t hold your hand, but there are always several things to solve at the same time, so you can easily switch things up if you get stuck. That’s partly necessary because the puzzles aren’t linear. Not for people with short attention spans and not always super user-friendly (autosaves!!), but lovingly made and I really like it! There was an issue with mouse controls at launch where you had to double- or triple-click everything, but seems that’s been fixed. There are still flickering shadows in some places, and please make it a bit clearer what’s clickable and what needs to be dragged with the mouse.
I've played Leaves 1 & 2, this is not like those. Some of the puzzles are so non-intuitive and some are stupid hard. The artwork is very good.
I rarely play games anymore, but when I do it's puzzle adventures. The kind that don't explain themselves and expect you to figure things out. Think old Myst era games and Big Fish classics. LEAVES 3 feels like that. You explore, you observe, you get stuck, something clicks. The world is weird and handcrafted and the soundtrack good. Some things took me a moment to figure out what to do and what was even clickable, but honestly that's part of it. If you miss puzzles that actually make you think, I'd say give it a shot.
Totally brilliant game. Beautiful, artistic, all the things I usually don't worry about. This is a must play. Puzzles are challenging me. I obviously don't think along the same lines as the developers! Cannot stop playing (good thing I'm retired}. Also, cannot wait for the next one. Bravo to the developers. You made a magnificent game!!!!
The graphics are gorgeous! The puzzles clever! The controls suck big time. The first two games just used the mouse. This game uses WASD and it's quite awkward. I spent 15 minutes trying to position a piece. I even resorted to a walkthrough. to make sure I was in the correct position. Still didn't work. Had to fumble around—one step left, one step right...over and over until it finally clicked into place. Really, really terrible controls and intensely frustrating.
My wife and I played Leaves 1 & 2 last weekend, really enjoyed them. We played through Leaves 3 this weekend and loved improvements from the previous games. A lot of really great mind-twisting puzzles. Was much more difficult than the previous games. Great use of the aesthetics of the first two games in this one - hope to see more of that in Leaves 4. Soundtrack/Score (yes even the bird noises) was flavorful and felt right for each zone that it was different in. Controls do need some work, however, considered the first two games were point-&-click, it's to be expected, as well as some polish on clipping through the map in some locations; nothing a patch couldn't fix. If you're solely a point-&-click puzzle gamer, you may find this one more difficult because of the controls, however, if you played through the first two games, this one is a must.
