I'm seven hours in and its unreal! Its like being in another world, actually being there, the descriptions and activities are so real and the options to choose reflect how i would, or could respond in the choices I make. None are outlandish. The plot is intriguing with twists and turns to keep the NCPs as well as your protagonist on their toes, and I love the descriptions of the fae, and the places they live in, also just as intriguing, and they certainly keep you on your toes! Another plus, while there are romantic interests, or you can choose to not have a romance, its not a case of meet them once then get all lovey dovey. You have plenty of time to get to know them and choose a lover if you want one, its not a romantic IF though the romance is there in the background if you want it. I am really enjoying this and I'm sure that I will be playing this for a while as I explore all the options. While there is a glossary, a codex and a dream diary that update as you go along, they mainly record what you find out after the event, making a replay or two to get more information recommended. It is suggested you play through three times to get everything, which makes this excellent value for money, and a superb way to pass the time! I hope there will be more games within this world that is so well designed it could be another country here on earth. There are plenty of options for that to happen, they do not have to be sequels as such, though I am already invested in the group of people I have met. An excellent IF, I look forward to more to come, pretty please!
This was a pleasant surprise. It started out slow, but the moment fae were introduced, I was hooked. The characters are likable and the male romance options seemed good. That said, I was more invested in the fate of the fae than in progressing the romance. The world building really shines in the game. Skill checks were easy enough. I don't think I failed a single one. Even though this is apparently the start of a series, the story had a satisfying ending. I look forward to reading more from the author.
Ignore the play time shown by Steam; I'm playing it on the publisher's website instead of using the Steam client. The world of Leas: City of the Sun is intriguing, the novel/game satisfyingly long without overstaying its welcome, and the characters engaging. Part of the story involving the fae is—intentionally, I'm certain—ambiguous, so if you're a reader who needs all mysteries to be clearly and definitively explained by the end, you may be disappointed; personally, I believe it worked very well, leaning into the fae being phantasmagoric. The quality of the games put out by Choice of Games varies wildly, but this one is excellent. In the one playthrough I've done so far, I've noticed no bugs (such as repeating text), only a few typos, and no plot inconsistencies. The choices for the reader to pick are well telegraphed as to which skill they'll use; and when the reader is asked to choose what the main character will say, there aren't instances where a choice is misleading (such as "Great!" turning out to be sarcastic instead of serious or vice versa). For enjoyment, Leas: City of the Sun is in the top 25% of the interactive fiction novel/games I've played, and I'm eagerly looking forward to the next two in this planned trilogy. Definitely worth full price.
Yes! I'd give it 9/10. The best: Great writing, excellent replay-value, interesting and heart tugging story and characters. And some mysteries left unsolved! Only minus is the question of sequel. Without it the story remains incomplete, even though the ending was built very nicely. To whom it may matter... If you look hard enough (like four replays), there are few steamy scenes to discover!
I think it's a decent read, but for now I only experienced it just with one playthrough, particularly pursuing a romance with K. The romance itself was quite slow for most of the story, only to feel rushed at the end. I would have loved to see certain events from K’s point of view, as it would add depth to her emotions and provide insight into how she perceives the situation regarding her race. One aspect that stood out to me was the lack of true enemies throughout the game. While I enjoy playing as a warrior, the story seemed to push me into a more diplomatic role, limiting combat-related choices.
That said, L’s story was compelling, and I found experiencing events from his perspective to be particularly engaging.
The world-building was excellent, leaving me eager to learn more about the history of the Fae and humanity. Understanding their past interactions and conflicts might have influenced some of my choices differently. Interestingly, the game didn’t present a clear villain. Even the supposed main antagonist had motivations that, from a certain perspective, could be seen as justified. This moral ambiguity added depth to the narrative, making it all the more intriguing. Overall, while some aspects felt underdeveloped, the rich lore and storytelling kept me invested, and I hope to see more of this world in the future.
This is quite a good story. It took me a while to get into it and I'm glad I stuck it out. First off, the author did two things that made it difficult to jump in and enjoy this. The story is written in the first person which isn't so much a problem as it is something that makes this different from a lot of interactive fiction. I can't recall offhand many IF titles that use first person ("I") rather than second person ("you"), but the only other I can think of is not very good. Leas is good, and worth adjusting to the linguistic choice. You don't notice it after a while. The second thing that made this difficult to get into was the opening. This opens on a dream sequence POV that has so little context that even now after finishing the story I really don't know what was going on in that dream sequence. Just a very weak start. But it's worth continuing past that point. This is a terrific story, one of the better titles from Hosted Games in the last few years. Be warned now; I learned about halfway through, while checking the Codex, that this is intended to be the first in a trilogy. Be assured, as I would have hoped to have been, that this is a complete and satisfying story. There is no cliffhanger ending, or a "To be continued" leaving you unsatisfied as a reader. If a sequel ever comes out, I am sure I'll read it. But this was a perfectly satisfying story with a perfectly satisfying ending. It is not incomplete. It's worth a buy.
Well this was one of the best Choice of Games I've read and I've read quite a lot of them. I'm also a big fan of fantasy novels and this was very worth it for me.
The author of Leas has done a fantastic job in balancing exposition, character interaction, and organic plot progression in a unique, yet familiar fantasy setting. I have to commend the story for being sufficiently lengthy and of quality without scenes being overly wordy. This does not feel like a 'mere' 400,000 word story, and it's a testament to the author's sincere care for the reader's experience.
