Feels like Wii Play Tanks! Great fun with friends!
Was offered a copy through Curator Connect and just had to give it a go. Hard to go wrong for $3.40 Canadian but it has some issues. Still, for the tiny price and what it tries to do, I can't help but give it a thumbs-up, however hesitant that may be. Deliberately aims to be a Wii Play Tank fangame, with a wholesome art style and lots of levels, which is great. Fake depth-of-field effect makes everything look tiny, like toys, fitting the theme. Bare-bones-äss Unity Engine game. Can't even set/change/view your controls. Features co-op and competitive multiplayer but only online -- no local at all, which was the entire point of the Wii original. (Yes, people would play Wii games online. The Dr. Mario RX and Mario Kart Wii crowds were particularly feisty, and I enjoyed taking down bosses with random players in co-op in The Last Story, a game too good to re-release, apparently.) Bullets bounce off walls. Not sure if that was in the original, but it means that the single player (or, at very least, the first tenth of the co-op levels) essentially consist of trying to get just the perfect angle to bounce a tank shell into an immobile enemy. Not particularly engaging. Ironically enough, for a game about tanks, there are only relative controls. W doesn't make your tank accelerate, with A and D for turning as S as brake. Nope, WASD makes your tank go up, left, down, and right, accordingly. Expecting to be able to turn and reverse (you know, like a game in which you drive a vehicle), I nearly got killed a few times in the first ten levels simply because these controls just don't feel good, and instead of turning a bit like I'd expected, the tank would just move in the direction pressed, straight into the line of fire. Single-player is just a private game you haven't invited anyone to, but at least you can pause that way. There are 100 levels to play through, with achievements every 10 levels. I didn't touch the battle mode, and I don't expect there to be anyone playing online. Not sure if there is bot support but I have my doubts. Powerups seem to be hidden under... cubes of solid paper? Not sure how that fits the fabric-based art style. Powerups do not persist until the next level and take multiple shells to blow up a cube and collect, so I don't have much incentive to get them. The yellow dart ammo type is a rapid-fire full-auto weapon but projectiles do not bounce. Enemies that use it can cancel your tank shells with their projectiles, meaning you just have to find a place to camp and bounce your rounds into those tanks to blow them up. It's cute, and if you have a fondness for the time you spent playing Wii Tanks with friends and family, this MIGHT deliver on that, I guess, but you're playing alone with no one on the couch with you, which kind of defeats the purpose. There IS online support, if your old Wii friends want to co-op, I guess. For what this does and what I'd want out of it, it's probably better to just seek out a composite-to-HDMI adaptor for the Wii itself, or to fire up an emulator.
Great little game! At least 300 co-op levels. Can't wait to try battle mode with some friends.
Handmade Battles: A Cozy Journey in Felt
There’s something almost magical about this little felt game. It reminds me of those childhood afternoons when, after school, my sister and I would lose ourselves in endless hours of crafting. The sound of scissors snipping, the scent of glue, the soft texture of fabric in our hands. Surrounded by threads, needles, pieces of colourful felt, and handmade gifts—each one with its own story. It’s a vivid, intimate little space, one that feels close, familiar. The felt universe, with its soft tones and its board filled with little tanks, wraps us in a homely atmosphere. Every moment, every whimsical vibe of the stage, breathes the dedication and care, as though everything was made by hand, with love. We listen to melodies that accompany this sanctuary, like a tune playing on the radio while assembling a puzzle with family. Here, we find our friend: this teddy bear who takes care of us, but also plays with us in these quiet moments, full of smiles and joy. We cherish them, these sweet moments—like a taste of eternity—where we create and invent our own stories, giving them the decorations that make them unique in our eyes. Like playing with strollers, these tanks—being their drivers—look at the felt battlefield with serenity in their hearts. They sip tea and nibble biscuits, while we position our toys to play together, cornering the tank on the other side. There’s a constant invitation to try, to not give up, to keep moving forward despite failures. The heart system gives us space to learn, to take risks without fear. Just as we still have our scissors and glue, we can adorn our little toys. Our teddy bear is always there, helping us. With delicate hands in a world like this, a tank doesn’t break walls. Instead, it finds its own melody and cadence in this soft, nurturing place. Satisfied, we step away, gathering all our things. We declare that it’s still the weekend, and the games must go on. In these small games—with my sister by my side—we always ask: What story shall we create together? Where shall we go next? Hoping that this sacred time will not end too soon. We step out, take tea with our teddy bear, and watch as this little game—where we were the drivers of small tanks—shows us what really matters: the warmth of companionship. Thanks to the developer for gifting us this little piece of handmade happiness, and to all those who seek a different way of playing, connecting, and enjoying. From Red Lagoon Company, always on the lookout for cooperative gems, I encourage you to immerse yourself in this felt universe and let its quiet magic carry you away. At home, the warmth of family sings a tale.
Lack of local co-op is a major dealbreaker here. I can emulate the original Wii Play version of this for free.
