I'm not going to refund this because I want to support the dev but this game really isn't very good. I'm a HUGE fan of the original trilogy, I have a weird obsession with it after having beat it in the 90's as a kid, but this "remake" is just not it. It does use some similar themes with the haunted house, the creepy guy in the hood, etc, but everything else is awful. You can tell 90% of the assets are just store bought/flips, (not to mention the dreadful AI art for the Steam banner) the sound design is loud and obnoxious, the combat is atrocious and the puzzles are super vague and expect you to investigate every single element to find the one thing you can actually interact with. When the game expected me to do one of those annoying painting tile shuffle puzzles where you can only move one block at a time, is where I stopped.
TLDR; it's a great 5 hour romp with a psychological horror game with light combat mechanics. Definitely worth $15, especially if you played the 1989 original. A quick note about the game before the review: I played the original 1989 version in 1990 and fell in love with it. I had no idea this game was even coming. It came up in my discovery queue. This game will have you do a TON of backtracking. There is no hand holding, and also there is no map besides the outside area, which is also very basic. If these things are deal breakers for you, it's probably best to move on. If you don't mind these things, then onward we go! This little indie game can tax your machine. Even with a 4090, a 12700k and 32MB DDR5 RAM, running this on cinematic settings at 4K could eat the frames at times. Overall I was at 90-110 most of the time, occasionally capping at 120 and dropping all the way down to 50 in a place or two (not that you need high frames for this game). The game can be completed on the first playthrough in roughly 3-5 hours. It took me nearly 6.5 due to having my brightness down and completely missing a door that I spent almost 45 minutes looking for. The story is expanded upon with the original, with more lore, combat and extra puzzles. It's fairly relaxing with tense moments. Combat is quite basic, but that's all it needs to be for this game. The puzzles are all fairly simple, with an occasional moment where you might scratch your head for a minute or two. Some of the game can be completed in whatever order you choose but for the most part it will all lead you back to a linear path, so don't be afraid to go off and explore. Eventually you will find yourself where you need to be. This game doesn't hold your hand. There are hints in the form of coins that you can find in game. You can use these coins at a certain location to get hints about what you should do next if you really feel stuck. Bullets for your gun are plentiful (and ultimately infinite if you know where to look) and certain other consumables will respawn at certain locations if you need them. Death works similar to the Tomb Raider games where you will be put back to the start of the area the game last saved, but any inventory items you picked up will remain with you, or any ammo/consumables you used will remain gone. Speaking of saving, you can save any time by hitting escape and forcing the game to autosave. It also autosaves any time you enter an area. The only thing I was disappointed in was the final area. I loved the final fight and the actual ending. It was somewhat frustrating to get around though due to having no map of the area. The final part of the game could really stand to have a map. Other than that, I have no complaints. Overall I think this game was a steal for $15, especially if you loved the original game. It's a great way to spend 5 hours of your time. I highly recommend supporting the developer. If you're in the mood for a psychological horror game with a little bit of basic combat, you should look no further than this. Here's hoping we will see remakes of parts 2 and 3 as well. Very well done! 9/10.
Best game I have played in years! Numerous creepy, ghost filled buildings and biomes to explore! Great story, great puzzles, mostly intuitive, hint system. The developer is super hands on, responsive and involved with the discussions. Basically a haunted house mystery. If I had to compare it to another game, it would be to Layers of Fear 1. Normally I shy away from "creature" games where you have to avoid/hide/runaway from but this game is very forgiving and it was all very "manageable." I missed 3 achievements and I'm actually looking forward to replaying to try and get them. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS GAME! It's a 10+++++++.
Loving it so far! I've been a fan of this series since I downloaded it off of a BBS in the 90s! So glad the dev has been keeping it alive all these years. I've been looking for a great adventure game that takes place in a spooky old mansion for a long time now. I'm a big fan of the old MacVenture game Uninvited and was hoping, since Shadowgate was getting some love, maybe the other games in the series would get the same love. But I guess I don't need another Uninvited now! Last Half of Darkness has me covered! I'll update my review as I play more.
A new game from William R. Fisher III, a honoured veteran of B-games, is a reimagining of his game that started a long (seven games!) series: The Last Half of Darkness. It is, in fact, its fourth incarnation, for the first time in 3-D with free movement. The core gameplay is still exploration, looking for items and using them in proper places. It's not by any means a "walking simulator", unlike an average UE/Unity horror game, and it is certainly much more memorable than most of them, even if you've never played original game, and if you have, you might sometimes feel like you know for sure what items you need, but you don't know where they are this time. Pretty much everything from original is expanded and carefully brought to a more modern environment, while maintaining old-school B-movie feeling. There's some shooting action now, though, including one boss fight, but it's not that difficult even for me, and I'm bad at shooter games. The game is made with lots of love and attention to details, and while original game and its previous versions were very imperfect in every way, this reimagining feels much more mature and solid. I haven't noticed any bugs, and all the bugs other players encounter get fixed less than in a day. A must have for fans of classic horror adventure games and low-budget horror movies.
After my first fine impressions of the horrorsphere the pointless shooting, roaming around and repeating the same actions i´ve done exactly the same way before ruined it for me.
SUPERSUPER!!!
🔷INTRO🔷I bought Last Half of Darkness 2025 out of curiosity... and I liked it (I don't know the OG). I enjoyed this fairly classic horror story. It's a nice game. It's like an old kinda game with modern graphics. 🔷TAGS🔷Horror. Puzzles. Exploration. ✅PROS✅ -I liked having the freedom to move around a bit to explore the place and unlock doors/codes as I went, even though I did a lot of backtracking (you have to retrace your steps to look for things you'd forgotten or hadn't seen). -Graphics are beautiful (mansion, furniture and objects, garden, Victor, etc.), however, ❌Sarah's model looks very cheap. -Creepy atmosphere. -Puzzles are simple, except the "slider" but the ghost helped me :D (I know... skill issue), so I think it'll be fine for most of you. -A few well-placed jumpscares that did their job. I was scared. ❌CONS❌ -The ghosts are fcking fast. You have to react quickly to kill them. -It's a bit repetitive. -Combat mechanics are meh and clunchy. -Poor ending. ⏱️DURATION⏱️It took me 8 hours to complete the game (I took my time).
I have played Shadows of the Servants, Beyond the Spirit's Eye, Tomb of Zojir, Society of the Serpent Moon, and now this. At some point I'd also like to play the first games. The most popular review on this page is also the absolute worst. The guy who left the review barely played it and for anyone who is not familiar, he is a somewhat popular youtuber who mainly does reviews on old fps games. He shows utterly no aptitude for puzzle or adventure games. He claims to have quit basically at the first puzzle and complains about having to look for items. No duh. Have you ever played an adventure game before? Searching for items in every nook and cranny is one of the cornerstones of the genre. He also complains about the assets being subpar. I noticed that on the gun model in the game there are some inverted normals and it looks like a bad 3d scan, but bear in mind that this is basically made by one person. I hope that people can be forgiving on such shortcoming due to this crucial factor. Basically the popular reviewer just rushed through a small part of the game and seemingly was expecting a fps game. On top of this he claims to have "beaten" the original games when he was a kid yet as a grown man he doesn't even understand the basic tenants of this genre of game. So I seriously doubt his claim that he beat any games in this franchise. He left a terrible and careless review, don't listen to anything he says. These games are also quite obscure so I would imagine that the likelihood that an Australian child played the originals and beat them is exceedingly slim. This game is definitely not the hardest puzzle game around. There is a major glitch I encountered with coins so if you are collecting them and don't want to replay for all the coins really take your time when picking them up and do not rapidly pick up two in a row. Atmospheric, fun, short, and spooky. I liked how the other games were more challenging but it was also really fun to be in the exact same LHOD atmosphere from a first person perspective. If you truly were a fan of the other games, unlike the top reviewer, you will at least get something out of it and probably be compelled to finish it. These games are sort of known for their bizarre, low budget qualities. Do not go in expecting something else.
