Lantern of Worlds - Layla's Quest

Alright. [i]Lantern of Worlds - Layla's Quest[/i] is done and dusted. It was a decently fun JRPG-ish style game that weighed in at under two hours. It also seems to heavily incorporate AI into the artwork AND the voice acting. Or so it seems to me. And if they actually aren't AI generated, they carry that appearance in pretty much every way, so that would be something to address. But let's talk about the parts of the game that don't seem to be AI generated (although they still very well might be). Which basically comes down to the story and the RPG mechanics. The story is pretty basic. You, Layla, are an assassin who refused to kill a target, and so she was exiled by her masters, to an island from which she is supposed to spend the rest of her life reflecting on her unwillingness to kill someone, lol. But as it turns out, the Goddess of the Seas needs her help in stopping the God of Fire from being summoned to this world. More or less. So, you are tasked with defeating the Fire Cultists and stopping this summoning, in return for which, the goddess will give you your very own pirate fleet. Seems like a pretty sweet deal. The RPG mechanics come in the form of basic JRPG combat, but with a nice twist where there are some timed actions which you will need to click on before they disappear, and then your standard selection of actions (attacks, spells, items). You do level up and can buff one of three stats each time. And you will earn a skill mastery at level 3 as well. Which is probably the level cap in this game best I can tell. And you have items of course. Weapons, armor, and actual items such as a sleeping bag and potions. One note here: it's not really advantageous to buy anything from the island's merchant other than healing potions and one bottle of rum. Don't waste your coins on other stuff. You'll find everything else you need during your adventure. Steam screenshots are not supported with this game, btw. So, there won't be any here. So yeah, that's pretty much the game in a nutshell. The AI stuff notwithstanding, it was still a decently fun time and depending on how you feel about AI generated content, this does probably earn that four-dollar price tag. But I would still recommend this on sale instead. And if you object to AI generated content, then this is almost definitely a skip instead. This is an update of an older game in the Lantern of Worlds series, although I believe it has most of the same content. If my memory serves me correctly, some (not all) of the bugs from the original have been addressed. Although these games tend to feel like they could use more fleshing out, I've personally enjoyed my time with each of them, and was happy to pick this one up as a standalone game. I'd recommend this as long as you're okay with a shorter experience with a little bit of clunkiness. I'm in agreement with the other reviewer that this takes ~2 hours to finish. In all honesty, I wish that was true of more games in my Steam library.
