About

1-Bit Explorer is an adventure game focused on exploration where you do NOT save the world and the world does NOT need saving.
The point is to explore to your heart's content and uncover mysteries and secrets (or don't, it's up to you, really).
You are the son of Frank, regular citizen of Moneta Village, which is trying to complete his collection of Ancient Coins. Due to a disease, your father needs your help with this apparently mundane task of gathering 3 Ancient Coins. Each one requires you to explore a bit of the village and its habitants. What you might discover is that there are secrets, ghosts, other dimensions, demons and ancient Kings hiding in the corners. It is up to you to discover this mysteries.

The gameplay consists mostly of various puzzles, either being:
Conversational Puzzles:
Talk your way into making some people do as you want. Saying the right things might turn them into useful people for your quests.
Push & Pull Puzzles:
Rocks can be moved around the environment to either unblock a path or to press buttons and special locations, revealing secrets and opening new pathways.
Lever Puzzles:
Levers can be used to unblock paths, either by activating them in a certain order, activating them in a time limit or simply finding your way into them to uncover new shorcuts.
Timing Puzzles:
Some puzzles require you to do tasks in a certain time limit. Be careful with the timer, because it might be the difference between just failing or straight up dying!
Positional Puzzles:
Puzzles might require you to stand on different places in different orders. Be aware of sounds that can indicate a success or failure!
Environmental Sound Puzzles:
Some times you just need to follow your ears. Be aware of your surroundings and seek out the sounds!
Active Combat:
If you are willing to explore, you might fight your way into a battle or two. Make sure to learn the ropes with a helpful weaponsmith!
Explore, explore and explore:
The game is focused on exploration, so make sure to check every corner and talk to everyone! The world is there for you to experience and discover!

Some people say that a game is "good for a free game". So wait, the price you paid for the experience changes how the experience itself feels? Actually, I'm pretty sure I saw a study that implies this to be the case... but I think we can agree that this is complete nonsense from a rational standpoint. This game is good. Free or not. I'd pay for it. It's a smaller-scale, combatless Link's Awakening? Sort of. It's also its own thing. There's little handholding later on, and you're expected to intuit or stumble upon certain things; and the world is compact enough that even if you get completely stuck, bruteforcing a solution by going literally everywhere doesn't take very long. Which is not to say that there isn't plenty to explore! Also, take a look at the trailer. Did you notice? If you didn't, I'm sure the main menu will show you. Like I said, there really is plenty to explore. I admit, I got stuck one time, because one puzzle's solution is kinda unintuitive (
desert temple
). But there's a helpful guide, should you really need one. Games.

Gostei, me surpreendeu. Recomendo
I'm on the edge of giving this a no. It gets a yes from me because it's free. Basically, this is not the peaceful exploration game it claims to be. As such, there are a few additional objectives. There will be spoilers later down in this review, I'll mark where the major spoilers start. I'll start with the good: the sprite art itself is decent, the towns look good, and I like the concept and design behind it. But the execution is lacking. The game has a system clearly designed off of the Koroks from the newer Zelda games. The problem with this is, it is REQUIRED for the true ending, and the environmental design is... poor. Several of them are found in breakable rocks, which are easy to miss due to not standing out. There are also some minor moving grass puzzles that are not explained, you have to figure out they exist by just happening to notice that some screens have moving grass, and then realizing this isn't part of the environment design, and THEN stepping on them and realizing you have to step on them all in a specific order which can only be discovered by brute force. There's also no way to check which ones you've already gotten, so you end up running back through areas multiple times. In addition, there's no sprint, and no fast travel of any kind; while the map isn't huge it's still quite tedious. There's a significant amount of gold in the game; you can pick up a total of 4900 gold after losing 100 in a game and spending 1000 on one of the coins. You will end the game with this gold, as there is nothing else to do with it and you've wasted your time picking it up (you will always be given the 1000 gold to buy the coin as part of a sidequest for a different coin.) ************** SPOILER ZONE ************** Time travel exists in this universe. This is mentioned a grand total of once, for a throwaway plot point, and never brought up again. You have Silent Hill-esque travel to a hell realm. This is also never explained in any way. There are eldritch gods you have to kill. Again, no explanation at all. In order to kill these gods, you get a weapon that you can upgrade. At full upgrade (which you'll almost certainly have before fighting any of them) you can just stand in place and kill them before losing half your health. One of the dungeons is hidden in the desert. There is literally no clue or any other information anywhere telling you how to reach it or even that it's there. Overall, this game feels like an idea more than an actual fleshed out story. It's a lot of atmosphere but there's nothing behind it.
Excellent, well worth your time.
