Playing this sometimes felt like attempting to read an advanced scientific book despite only prior knowledge stemming from cartoons, while other times made me lose brain cells from chronically online humor, or just contemplate the concept of existence. This game is really well designed with an incredible visual presentation; the usage of diverse styles and unnatural colors provides the game with a highly unique, surreal and striking look! Moreover the solid soundtrack enhances the ambience greatly. The story itself is quite interesting too, it's generally rather silly yet explores intriguing and heavy topics, even delving into philosophical dilemmas at times. I found it impressive that even certain NPC interactions managed to be thought-provoking! Also the plot as a whole felt entertaining and immersive due to having freedom on the map and being able to discover secrets. Altogether I think it's a lovely captivating short experience and for a low price too!
Wait this ♥♥♥♥ is actually so peak I love it (by it i mean idolizer, the cutest bestest girl)
Be warned, this is a biased review, since this is my friends game and I did the sprites for it, but I'd like to share my thoughts regardless. Laments of a Platinum Rose is a nice and sweet 2.5 - 3.5 hour visual novel, depending on how it's played, and I love how the game utilizes it's time. The story is engaging, fun, silly, and exciting throughout, and the off-putting color scheme really helps with conveying those grittier or dark parts of the story in a way that is uniquely delightful. I really love how 20$13 managed to make such interesting characters, and I just couldn't help but get drawn into the world that they had created when illustrating the characters. The soundtrack is brilliant as well, and I'm so excited to have more avenues where 20$13's music is available >:3 Some of my favorites from the soundtrack are "Our Plucked Wings" (Club edit seen in... the club) and IDOLiZER's theme! I know I would have loved this experience regardless of me or my friends involvement, so I hope others do as well! :) Also IDOLiZER is hot
My friend got me this game, and it is well worth the play. The art is super cool! The saturated photobashed background and NPCs gives a real uncanniness to the world that made me eager to explore, and Lilith is so pretty. The music does a great job in setting the mood of a scene, especially the one that plays when you meet a certain someone. The humor can be odd, but it works well for the setting and still makes me laugh. It makes it worth revisiting locations to make sure I read everything. LoaPR just has good vibes, and if you, like me, love gay robots and social commentary you will probably agree.
It's not that often that I can say that a game actually moved me to the point of affecting my thoughts and actions even days after having played it, but this game did. It's a wonderful game full of really interesting conversations and ideas. The characters and art is super cute, it's full of fun easter eggs and hidden content for anyone who loves to be rewarded for backtracking and exploration. If you have a few hours to spare and you enjoy visual novels that provide humrorous and insightful commentary on real world topics through a fictive lens, please do yourself a favor and give this game a try!
Laments of a Platinum Rose, developed and published by 20$13, is a short but conceptually ambitious visual novel that leans heavily into philosophical storytelling, abstract worldbuilding, and player-driven exploration. Rather than presenting a straightforward narrative, it constructs a fragmented experience centered on a bio-mechanical protagonist navigating a world shaped by political tension, metaphysical questions, and the blurred boundary between artificial existence and something resembling divinity. It is less concerned with telling a conventional story and more interested in inviting the player to interpret meaning through interaction, choice, and reflection. The narrative unfolds in a non-linear structure, placing the player in a central hub environment where different characters, events, and fragments of the world can be accessed in varying orders. This approach gives the experience a sense of openness, allowing players to piece together the larger picture at their own pace. Conversations are the primary vehicle for storytelling, often layered with philosophical undertones that explore identity, autonomy, and the nature of consciousness. The writing is deliberately dense at times, filled with abstract ideas that may not immediately resolve into clear answers. For players willing to engage with its themes, this can be rewarding, as the game encourages interpretation rather than providing definitive conclusions. For others, the lack of clarity may create distance, making it harder to fully connect with the narrative. Gameplay is minimal in the traditional sense, as expected from the genre, but it incorporates just enough interactivity to keep the experience from feeling entirely passive. Movement between locations, selecting dialogue options, and choosing the order of interactions all contribute to a sense of agency. These choices influence how the story unfolds and which aspects of the world are emphasized, creating subtle variations between playthroughs. While the mechanics themselves are simple, they support the narrative structure effectively, reinforcing the idea that the player is actively uncovering the story rather than being guided through it. The presentation is one of the game’s most distinctive elements. It employs a mixed visual style that combines hand-drawn art, manipulated imagery, and unconventional design choices to create an atmosphere that feels both surreal and fragmented. This aesthetic aligns closely with the themes of the narrative, giving the world a sense of instability and ambiguity. The visuals do not aim for consistency in a traditional sense, instead embracing variation as a way to reflect the shifting nature of the story and the protagonist’s perspective. This can be striking and memorable, though it may also feel disjointed to those expecting a more cohesive visual identity. Sound design plays a significant role in establishing the game’s tone. The soundtrack leans toward ambient and atmospheric compositions, creating a subdued but persistent sense of unease. Music is used sparingly but effectively, enhancing moments of introspection and tension without overwhelming the experience. Combined with subtle audio cues, it helps maintain immersion and reinforces the emotional undercurrents of the narrative. While not overtly dynamic, the audio complements the overall design in a way that feels intentional and cohesive. One of the more noticeable aspects of Laments of a Platinum Rose is its limited length. The experience can be completed in a relatively short amount of time, and while multiple paths and endings provide some incentive to revisit it, the overall scope remains modest. This brevity works in its favor by keeping the narrative focused, but it also means that certain ideas and themes are not explored as deeply as they could be. The game presents a rich conceptual framework, but it does not always have the space to fully develop it. The abstract nature of the storytelling is both its greatest strength and its most significant barrier. It allows the game to explore complex ideas in a way that feels unique and intellectually engaging, but it also requires a level of patience and willingness to interpret that may not appeal to all players. Those expecting a clear, structured narrative may find the experience difficult to follow, while others may appreciate the freedom it offers in shaping their own understanding of the story. Despite its limitations, the game succeeds in creating a distinct and memorable experience. It does not attempt to compete with larger visual novels in terms of scale or complexity, instead focusing on delivering a concentrated exploration of its themes. The combination of non-linear storytelling, experimental visuals, and atmospheric sound design gives it a unique identity that stands out within its niche. In the end, Laments of a Platinum Rose is best suited for players who are interested in narrative experimentation and philosophical storytelling. It offers a short but thought-provoking journey that prioritizes ideas and interpretation over traditional gameplay or narrative clarity. While it may not resonate with everyone, those who connect with its approach are likely to find it a compelling and unusual experience that lingers beyond its runtime. Rating: 7/10
i absolutely love the visuals, the background, the 3d sprites (especially the 3d sprites, i LOVED the 3d sprites), as well as the hand-drawn sprites/cgs are so original. The plot is really thought provoking, and i feel like there is an amazing point being made on free-will, and what it means to be human. The ending was very moving, which really surprised me, given that i felt that the game would end in a more silly manner. I am really looking forward for more of this, it is an amazing game that feels raw and very human. I can only appreciate when I feel the creator's love being poured into their game like that!
