Kitten Squad is an arcade bullet hell visual novel about some kittens saving animals on farms, zoos and circuses from the cruelty of humans and machines with the help of their wise forest friends and a variety of firearms.
Kittn Squad is a fun game. It may not be the best-looking game. It may not be huge or hugely popular. It has it's bugs and limitations. It doesn't have a lot of content. But boy does this game have replayability due to the sheer quality of the gameplay.
I don't know if it's the emotional themes of the game (the cutscenes can get pretty gorey), the music or just the bullet hell simulation in an animal world with griever-like machine monsters, but the game really just gives pure childish videogame fun no matter how many times I play it.
I for one first played this game with my mother on my ps4 (it has local co-op), when I was 9. I really, really wanted to save those animals. My mother didn't have time to play with me much, but when I completed my first quest of rescuing Olivia the orca, I actually cried. I didn't even get a cutscene to see what happened to her after, but I was just so happy I saved her. To me, even now at 18, the robots look scary. I sometimes jump at the bosses or if I get stuck in a corner.
The game has a small lobby/safezone where the wise crow tells you fun (or sad :( ) facts about various animals' lifestyles, families, preferences etc. You can get main story quests and cutscenes from the old deer and daily refreshing bounty quests from the pug.
You can customize your kittens alot, some skins literally change what animal you are! You can buy all kinds of accessories and colours with the kitten coins/gold you get from completing bounties, quests or just beating up bots and crates.
The game features a wide variety of bots and wide variety of guns to counter them or allude to different playstyles. The circling hit and run tactic with the guns with better firerates and range usually work best though. The game isn't as hard as it is grindy. The bosses are hard, so are some of the stages, but the longer part of your playtime will be spent actually getting to those levels because there are no continues, you need to get through 20+ stages on average to get to the actual quest, and you die cuz of annoying weapons or obstacles a lot. Good thing you can repeat your daily quests as many times as you like so at least you're getting free money as long as you are in the appropriate questline for the bounty bots. (Zoo/Farm/Circus)
