Follow our curator page: IndieGems if you like and want to see more reviews like this one.
King of the World is a real-time strategy game that is easy to learn with the end goal as the game's namesake, to conquer the world. That part, is not so easy. The game has a single difficulty level with a few bug at this time, so it can be frustrating to play at times, and not so friendly to the casual audience.
Gameplay
The basic game plays in a real-time strategy format, with a single-player campaign and also multiplayer options. You can adjust your view with the keyboard, mouse, or minimap. You can zoom in and out to get better view of the overall game or the portion you want to focus on. In the beginning of the game, you will first locate your tower, with each player having a designated color. You can buy different units in your tower, with purchase queues available. Each unit takes both time and gold. Every minute, you get some gold, so that basically signifies what would be a turn in a turn-based game. By controlling more areas, you will earn more money and thus expand your forces. You can use click and drag to select multiple units, and you can direct your forces to attack enemy towers. Through this method, you will gain control of the tower should you succeed. This means more money. At some towers you can build boats to travel to other islands, in order to further your regions of conquest. By defeating the other player(s), you will win. On the other hand, if you lose all of your towers or if your baron dies, you have lost the game. Winning will earn you gems that can be used to unlock new armies. The game does feature a nice built-in tutorial that gets you going. The game is fairly easy to learn and so it's not a hassle to start enjoying the game. There are currently no difficulty settings, which is a pity. It would be great for the developers to consider adding this so that casual players can enjoy the game as well. Also, there appears to be no way to pause the game at the moment. Even going to a menu to save in single-player mode means the time will keep running. A pause function of some kind would be welcome here. In addition, saving does not work right now. The game tells you that the game is saved, but there seems no way to load your game. The save is empty.
Graphics
Average graphics, and sometimes the different units are difficult to see.
Music
The music fits the game.
Controls
Keyboard and mouse is the way the game is meant to be played.
Pricing
Price is a little bit high I think for the quality of the game. I would put this game somewhere in the €10 range.
Positives
+Quite fun gameplay +Nice tutorial +Easy to learn
Negatives
-No difficulty settings -Cannot pause at all -Save doesn't work
Conclusion
King of the World is a real-time strategy game that is fairly challenging but easy to learn. It's not for everyone and the few lacking QoL settings makes things a bit frustrating and would drive away some players, and that is a shame. Otherwise the gameplay is rather fun overall. I would score it 6.5/10
I received the product for free. I did not receive any compensation to write this review. I got very high expectations for this game, when i saw it for the first time. After i have played this game, its all the money worth. I think people should be it, so the community in this game will be bigger. I played 5 people in my first game (all vs, all) and it worked very very good. KOTW's gameplay is very nice, the graphic is good, its a simple game all can understand very fast. There are some small issues about the techical part, but i think that will optimated very fast - but the game still worked very fine. I looking forward to more people will play it, and the future versions. This game have a very very big potential to be one of the best games in this category. Thank you for a good game.
Very interesting game that brings me pleasant memories of warcraft 3, you can play fast games and is quite well optimized, recommended.
So this is going to be a lengthy one, the game is at the quality all Indie Early Access games should be at release! It is not perfect in any way but it is solid and playable! I will go through the different aspects of the game to cover them! Graphics: The graphics are good and i think this might be the first game where it looks better in-game than on the screenshots. The style is obviously toony but it fits well! The menu is also really cool! Gameplay: Okay so they got all the basics right here regarding combat, unit control etc. There is still room for improvement of course, but i believe that's also intended Performance: It ran surprisingly well actually, however some smaller FPS spikes and the likes did happen in the larger battles. Sound: The sounds and music are pretty good and fits well. Stability: There seemed to be a few units glitching out, a unit controlling a tower not in correct position, could easily be fixed by selecting another unit instead though. Also the units on the boats seemed to glitch a little. Recap: There's a lot of potential for this! And they have got the foundation totally right. However there's of course also still room for lots of new stuff and improvements! We played as 4 players and it ran well, i don't however know if it will for larger player numbers. Also the Developer that were in the game seemed nice and helpful. Recommendation: I will recommend this game! Especially if you're playing together with some friends i believe it's perfect for that! However if you're into competitive gaming i would say you should wait a few weeks or a month so they've got time to adjust and improve some of the things.

NOTE: My recommend is ONLY for the free to play multiplayer and only to those who enjoy RTS games. King Of The World is an alright game but it's clearly still unfinished and it sure feels like it when playing. There are a number of missing features that are a standard in RTS games, the biggest one I found was issuing orders to troops via the mini-map is not in the game. This is required in RTS games and I don't understand how it was not implemented. Other things like the tech tree says it's still in development as well, it really should have been in Early Access. The interface or presentation of the game needs more work, most of it feels like a placeholder that's just there until the finished product arrives and can be inserted. The font has bad spacing, the text boxes are too small and cramped, so much so that characters will spill out of them. The character names in the cut scenes can be the same color as the background and be nearly invisible. The first time I played mission 2 I didn't even know there was a mission because it was the same color as the road and I couldn't see it. As for the gameplay, it is a bit basic but at the same time I did have fun here and there. When things are working out for you it can be fun and I think that in a match against other human players you will enjoy the game a lot more. The A.I. is a bit 'extreme' in that they are either too easy and dumb or too overpowered. I think the A.I. needs to be tweaked so that it is less 'extreme' and more in the middle. I often got outnumbered by enemy forces and that was frustrating, the armies they build seem more quantity than quality. Having said that that, they are quite easy to trick. You can lure out sections of their armies and have them follow you back into a bottleneck trap where you can wipe them out. The enemies will also just stand there while you take over towers all around them and they won't help, not unless you come within a certain distance to them. Definitely needs more work with the A.I. This is going free to play on March 29th and that's great. I think people will have a bit of fun with the multiplayer but I wouldn't recommend the single player as of yet, there definitely needs to be more work done on certain aspects that mainly affect the single player. The multiplayer is okay, it's a bit strange though. You are thrown onto a map with 11 other players and given towers randomly around the map. I always liked the old style where you have a bit of land to build a base or have as a base and then venture out taking over the rest of the map. You don't really have a base in this game, you have towers which can build the units and each tower you control adds to your daily income which you then use to buy the units. The multiplayer was strange, I tried a regular 12 FFA match and then later a 1 vs 1 match. We were randomly placed around the map as was the case in the 12 person game, however, there are still 12 colors. When I defeated the A.I. player the game didn't end, I had to then go out and take over the rest of the neutral towers but they don't have armies, just the tower defense arrow, it felt like doing chores took away from the fun of the game. It was very strange, my opponent was wiped out and I still have to go around and capture all the neutral towers, very unusual.. I have no idea why it was like this, also though when I came close to capturing them all the game randomly ended. I would recommend that if people like RTS games they give the free to play multiplayer a try because it can be fun at times. You may want to bring a friend or two though, I couldn't find any human players at all so I was against the A.I. which has it's own set of issues. The single player campaign is neat how it has cut-scenes and a story, but it feels unfinished. I didn't even make it too far in the campaign and got this feeling. You can tell a lot of work and effort has gone into this but it's just not ready yet in my opinion, this game really should be listed as Early Access and does seem like it could be a good game one day but that day is a bit further down the road. I hope King Of The World gets some more improvements and would love to see it again when it's fully completed.
This is most certainly described as the Warcraft 3 custom game "RISK" turned into a full on game. That being said, I think they executed it really well. I don't feel like leaving a lengthy review, so I'll summarize best I can. -AI is surprisingly good, but not great. 7.5/10 -campaign was neat. felt very easy though, and i yearned for more at the end. 6.5/10 (after saying this, I realize it might be more important to put in context that I have been playing games like this for years, so I may be a little ahead of the curve as i swept through campaign, as opposed to someone newer. so it could be an 8.5/10 for newer players) -diverse army/unit types as well as a tech tree give this game's multiplayer some depth that's potential definitely hasn't been fully tapped into yet since the community is so, so small. overall, really great idea, although seems like it would be very tough to balance once players started to find "metas" and other strong strategies. sadly, the unfortunate trend of RTS games falling in popularity over the years give this game a small chance of ever really popping off, but maybe with a little self marketing, and now with the whole game being free to play, I don't see why this couldn't become a game with at least 1,000 players a week. Seriously best of luck to the devs. Personally, I love the game and wish more people would give it a chance, but I can very easily see why most casual gamers may be pushed away. If the devs see this, I'd love to help in any way I can. Love the game!
can't play for free.. only multiplayer is aviable and only by joining others..
This is not a bad real-time rendition of Risk. King of the World provides a fun experience to those who like to strategize and like to conquer maps. I think the board game Risk is a little more entertaining than this, but for a free game, this is definitely worth a look. If you have 12 friends that want to play at one time, this is definitely a game you'd like to consider. I should point out that the free version DOES NOT let you host games, which can be a bit of trouble if you’re playing solo. Queuing for a game can take a while (if you’re lucky to find some people to play with). There used to be a feature where you played against computers; that no longer seem possible which really sucks for new players trying the free version. King of the World is a real time strategy sort of game. The gameplay is pretty smooth and simplistic. Although simplistic, it provides a lot to think about in a short amount of time. The game starts out at a decent pace, but picks up quite quickly. The maps are different and provide different routes to different states/cities/areas. Each area produces a certain amount of gold. The more area /cities players control, the more gold they are rewarded with to build up their armies. Every city is capable of producing units. The army units span from simple rifle units, automated units, cannons, to tanks. It really depends what sort of unit types the player likes. There are three to choose from : medieval, modern, and sci-fi. Each unit has their own strength and weakness. Finding a good balance of units is (obviously) key to victory. There is a tech tree system that upgrades units, but I’m not sure how much it affects multiplayer game-play. I would be very wary of this system. There is also a map editor that is included within the game. The visuals and graphics are pretty good for what the game is. I think the Unity engine is a perfect match for this sort of game. There won’t be in-depth details of objects blowing up or terrain being deformed, though the basic animations are all there. The sounds and music are okay as well. Nothing too crazy or outstanding in this domain. Would be nice if this area was touched up! Overall, I’d recommend the full version. The free version seems very cheap and stripped. Even if all your friends downloaded the game, you’d have to rely on someone having the full version in order to host a game (that’s a full game feature). The campaign is also taken away in the free version, which I can understand, but I find they completely gutted the multiplayer since I first started playing this game. I’d purchase if I had friends to play the game with. As a game by itself, especially the free version, it’s AT BEST, okay.
