It is in all intents and purposes, a fun take on the small child scary world dynamic that you see on steam, i.e Little Nightmares, INSIDE, etc. What we have here is some quality but I find 20 bucks to be extremely, extremely hard to justify for a game that you can knock out in less than an hour, even without mentioning the slippery control scheme that doesn't favor controller in the slightest, leaving me to tip-tap my keyboard awkwardly to the finish. Its VERY jank, very short, and probably not what I'd recommend for 20 bucks. If you really are interested regardless, wait for a 5 dollar sale or something, this is a very hard sell. As of now I only managed to beat it in 46 minutes on the first try through trial and error.
If you like games like Limbo, Inside, or Little Nightmares, STAY AWAY from this game. DO NOT BUY, even on sale. You WILL be disappointed. The game's a visual treat... but that's the only positive thing I can say about it. And even that one positive isn't without its issues -- while the art style is visually compelling, it does not read well at all in terms of gameplay. It's not at all clear what is just foreground/background and what is actually an interactable part of the environment, especially in the first couple areas. Controls are pretty much terrible, especially for a game with so few inputs. You press the joystick away from a ladder to jump off, but you press the jump button to jump off of a rope. Unless you're using keyboard; then you press jump to climb up a rope and you press the action button to jump off. There are very few tricky jumps, but the ones that do exist are frustrating, because the game doesn't seem to have coyote time and it's not clear when your character's hitbox leaves the platform. Do I have to jump before the midpoint of my character is past the edge? Before his trailing foot is past the edge? It didn't feel consistent, which maybe goes back to the art style being pretty to look at but getting in the way of gameplay. Maybe hitboxes of platforms just don't always line up with the art the same way. There are many blind drops where if you just move a bit too far (with no way of knowing what's "too far" and very little air control while falling) then you miss the landing area and die from fall damage. There are also many traps and other types of insta-deaths that are not really telegraphed enough to anticipate them. I think the game is trying to use these as "jump scares" to increase feelings of tension, but it just makes things boring and annoying. Run to the right until a spike trap kills you and reset; jump before that part next time. Way too many of the puzzles, especially early, are just things like "push an item to a ledge so you can make a jump" or "set an item on a pressure switch to disable a trap" -- if you've played a puzzle platformer in the past 25 years, you'll be bored to tears by these "puzzles". The underwater controls are unbearable, especially because the game eats inputs if you press keys too early, so the underwater escape segment is incredibly frustrating. That's about where I finally just quit playing because the game isn't worth it. I skimmed through some let's play -type videos on youtube to see if I was missing out on anything by not finishing the game, and it really doesn't seem like there's any meaningful payoff to suffering through the gameplay. Very strong Do Not Recommend from me on this one. It should have just been a 5- or 10-minute animated short on youtube, not a game. As a game, it's worse than most free experimental game jam products on itch.io.
Better than Little Nightmares. Interesting twist at the end. There is an Epilogue that hasn't been released as of the time of this review. Can;t wait for it. Controls are clunky but manageable so don't shy away. Not a 20 dollar game but i'd let 15 slide.
