Kanova is a simple, easy to use, VR enabled, 3D sculpting application. It uses the patented 3D Adaptive Distance Field (ADF) technology developed by Foundry. Clay-like materials can be manipulated to create 3D assets on both the desktop and within a VR environment.

It's early access, but this app is slow and cumbersome, even on fast hardware. If this is all Foundry managed to do with ADF over the past years, then colour me unimpressed. At Foundry's dev speed (these guys are sloooow at doing anything) it'll be years before this will be usable for any serious work, if ever. Mischief was abandoned. As a customer I haven't forgotten. I'm also a Modo users and things aren't looking hot, with minimum effort development from Foundry. All I'm saying is to be careful with Foundry, their track record isn't great for anything that isn't their main money maker; Nuke.
This is kind of hard to write, I see the potential of this technology, but in its current state , couple with the lack of direction from the developers , not to mention their other ADF technology(Mischief) has not seen any updates in a few years. For those reason I can't recommend this app, at least in its current state. 1. Dedication to this app is an unknown right now, Mischief had alot of hype about development then it got zero updates and worse no word from Foundry about its future. Kanova devs don't even know if they want this app to be targetted at professional or just keep it a consumer VR sculpting app like Tilt Brush. This uncertainty is lame, how can you not know where you're headed with a piece of software? I say go for broke, aim at the professional. 2. All brushes are 3d geometry, this can be great for hardsurface sculpting but it's a limitation for more organic sculpting(no way to control brush falloff, no way to modulate brushes with alphas) where you'll need brush that just affect the surface detail and not the underlaying ADF data. Zbrush has this down. You can see this limitation in 3DCoat which uses voxel volume for sculpting, the developers of Kanova will hit the same limitations and walls as voxel base sculpting app. 3. In it's current alpha state, its really rough and probably take a few years to be production ready. The strokes are kinda slow and lumpy, strokes need to be fast and smooth(not lumpy). Performance isn't great either, Performance will get better but the lead dev has alot to prove to every consumer who's interested in using this for serious work. I'm more concern with points 1 and 2 but the technical programming challenges will be rough. I'll update my review in 3-6 months.

The project is no longer worked on by the developer. It has a decent sculpt mode and more tools than its competition on steam, but it struggles with performance after a few minutes. Too bad, it could have become something good.
No longer in development, missing keybinds settings and more.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
I'm really disappointed by all the negative reviews. This is a very good free app that works in both VR and desktop mode. I probably have very little use for it because I have Medium (Oculus) and Tilt Brush. But after playing around with it, it's a pretty powerful tool. It has all the tools you need to create 3D assets. This is a goldmine for anyone interested in creating for VR or anyone who is artistically inspired. I did notice that it was a little sluggish at times, especially when I moved the brush really fast or when trying to do edits there was like a second or half second delay. On the other hand, it does undos and redos an insane amount of times. I did notice that when i was saving it opened a save option on the desktop but not in VR. But after saving in desktop, it will then save automatically to that named file. You can export to Sketchfab. That's another free app/ free website where you can view your creation or creations from other users. It would also be nice if some examplars were added in the app itself. Just a little step my step tutorial for something simple to create. As far as the desktop mode, I couldn't find a way to operate it independently from Steam VR. Steam VR always launched and I would like an option to work from the desktop without the need for Steam VR to be open, it just creates unnecessary lag. Pen input is supported, but I did not try that feature (but I will need to since I do have a Wacom tablet). I hope they put add an option to listen to my music from within the app in VR. I mean I like to create while listening to music and I think most people, even professionals, would like that function. Anyways, great job devs! Thank you for bringing this app free to Steam for anyone to create! Rate 8/10.
Way too laggy when making models. Ya'll need to make clean strokes.
This is pretty darn great. The UI is much easier to navigate than Medium, and the resolution options are very nice. Worked very fast and seemed quite intuitive for my first session. This could be a very good replacement for Medium if it gets some of the features that Medium has too, but overall, totally not disappointing for a free app, for sure.
Жена сказала если на этом обзоре будет 50 лайков и 5 наград , она купит ящик пива, мужики выручайте! My wife said if this review gets 50 likes and 5 awards, she will buy a case of beer, guys help me out
I'm only two hours in and absolutely loving this - have already modelled a creature and 3D printed it! I had bought Gravity Sketch but spending more time with this as it's so much more fun. I've always shied away from ZBrush type software 'on-screen' as I never liked the 2D plabe interacting in 3D....but in VR it just feels so natural. And all for free! Devs: Hopefully you have a number of tweaks in the pipeline but my immediate asks are: 1) Scene - Reset (re-orientates the scene vertically etc. back to scale./orientation at startup) 2) Tool: Push - a way to push surface inwards, conforming to the brush shape, without cutting/erasing 3) Tool: Bend - a way to bend all geometary around the pivot point of the controller, options to include or exclude geometary outside the controller radius 4) Scene: Import Reference - ability to bring any number of 2D images into the scene for reference (I know you can load a background but that seems to make the image too large and skewed). 5) Remove bounding box - is this necessary? Frustrating to start your design then realise you haven;t allowed enough space in the bounding box to complete it... would be great if this could be removed. I am not complaining though - great program and so far has stopped me going and buying Oculus Medium (and using via Revive).
