Kana no Mado is a really simple educational game, but I actually like how focused it is. Instead of trying to teach me everything about Japanese at once, it concentrates specifically on recognizing and reading hiragana and katakana. I found that approach refreshing because there is very little unnecessary material getting in the way of the actual learning. The lessons introduce the kana with sound and visual examples, then let me practice recognizing what I am seeing. I can work through the basic hiragana and katakana lessons at my own pace, and the instant feedback makes it easy to notice when I have confused similar looking characters. I liked the relaxed structure because it feels more like steady practice than a test. The quizzes are probably the most useful part for me. There are separate practice modes for hiragana and katakana, along with a listening quiz that makes me connect the sounds with the written characters. That gives the free version more value than simply presenting a list of letters. I also like that the characters can be shown in different fonts, since real Japanese does not always look exactly like the clean characters used in textbooks. The presentation is very calm and colorful, which suits the purpose perfectly. Kana no Mado is not trying to make learning feel like an action game, and I think that is the right choice here. The simple interface makes it easy to focus on the characters, while the native Japanese audio gives the exercises a much more useful practical feel. My biggest issue is also what the game intentionally leaves out. The free version does not teach writing or grammar, so it is really only the beginning of learning Japanese rather than a complete language course. Once I become comfortable with the basic kana, I would naturally want to move on to more advanced material. The additional paid content adds advanced kana, vocabulary and more quiz options, but the free version is still quite limited in scope. I also think the experience is better suited to beginners than players who already know kana. There is not much depth here for someone who can already read hiragana and katakana comfortably. For a complete beginner, though, I appreciate how little pressure there is. I can repeat the quizzes as often as I like and gradually build recognition without feeling rushed. Overall, Kana no Mado is a focused and genuinely useful little educational game. I like the clean lessons, listening practice and especially the different font styles that help me recognize kana outside of a textbook setting. It is not a full Japanese course, but it does a good job of teaching the specific skill it sets out to teach. As a free starting point for learning kana, I think it is well worth trying.
