Hiragana Flashcards

This is a learning app that can also serve as a tool to train your memory. That may sound like a strange distinction since learning itself relies on memorization, but some users might not aim to remember all 71 characters and instead approach the game more like a puzzle. In either case, the main mode is Challenge, where everything is introduced at a steady pace. Each challenge teaches five characters at a time. Every character appears on a tile that shows the symbol, its English phonetic spelling, and a few example words that use it. Afterward, you are tested on what you have learned. You are presented with a stack of random cards that flip over one by one, and your task is to identify the character either by typing the phonetic spelling or by selecting the correct option from a list. The list works well at the beginning, but once you learn more characters it becomes increasingly awkward to navigate. Your final grade does not really matter because all challenges are available from the start, so nothing needs to be unlocked. In addition to the learning challenges, there are review lessons and tournaments that include all the characters you have learned so far. The main difference is that tournaments contain many more cards to complete. If you want an even bigger test, there are also marathons that include all characters. Beyond the main mode, there is a practice section where you can choose specific sets to review, though I did not find it particularly useful. The final section is mastery, which tracks how many games or challenges you have completed for each character.

This game is helping me a lot with my Hiragana, its easy, relaxing and I would buy a Katakana version. Im playing on my steam deck and it works flawlessly.

The ability to customize my own practice sessions to focus on the characters I'm having the most trouble with is very appreciated. Also appreciate the animation for how to correctly write each kana, though I wish there was an option to view it slower so I could follow it easier. Maybe it could be in a separate menu or something? Idk. (EDIT: Thank you to the dev for letting me know there is actually an option to slow it down, which I completely missed! Sorry about that!) Also very happy with the new Dark Mode, it really helps with eye strain. Thank you for such a wonderful program! I am hopeful for a Katakana version to help me when I am ready to move on to it! Would be a guaranteed purchase from me.

Nice tool for practicing your recognition of hiragana, you are shown the symbol and you have to type the romanization. I felt the learning pace of the Challenges mode was okay, but you can also create your own decks in Practice mode if you find it too easy or hard. I have 2 suggestions for the developer that will turn this game from "okay" to "great": 1. It would be even better if the opposite can be practiced, starting from the romanization and voice pronounciation, then writing the hiragana (or just pick the correct symbol from a lineup). 2. I know this is called Hiragana Flashcards and not Katakana Flashcards, but it would be nice to also be able to practice Katakana. Maybe there can be an option to switch from Hiragana to Katakana, or show both of them on the same card.
