While it's obvious the developer spent a lot of time on the art, Just Take Your Left is sparse enough on other details to make me wish I'd gone right.
I adore point-and-click games, and I adore detective stories, so putting those two together is a surefire way to pique my interest. Although Just Take Your Left sounded like it checked both of those boxes, in reality the game experience was too short and random rather than the advertised fun and humorous. I completed the full game in under 45 minutes, and I honestly think it could have been less time if I hadn’t been looking for more.
Art Style and Graphics
The art style is where Just Take Your Left really shines, with over 3,000 hand-drawn animations according to its store page. However, as will be detailed in the following sections, the problem at the end of the day is this is meant to be a game rather than a movie.
Game Universe
More details of the story’s premise and the main character are given on the store page than is given in the game. Unfortunately, I also believe English may not be the developer’s first language, and it doesn’t seem he invested in a translator. From the store page, I know that the plot is meant to be funny, but for me it was mostly confusing and felt very random. Who is the rat character? What are his motives in preventing the detective from getting the diamond? Unlike in many point-and-click games, there is no dialogue or comments from the main character to help you in solving the puzzles. When there is dialogue that maybe is meant to be a clue, it is so poorly phrased that it’s uncertain it is a clue, so it definitely isn’t particularly useful. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2314594100
Gameplay and Mechanics
The gameplay experience mostly amounted to randomly clicking things due to the aforementioned lack of clues. As an example, there is a door knob that the player is meant to click on three times to get it off, but the character doesn’t say, “This knob seems loose,” or “Maybe I just need to pull harder,” or anything that could potentially clue the player in that it needs to be interacted with further. The lack of clues to aid in solving puzzles led me to expect that the game might take longer to complete, so I was very surprised when I completed the full game in under 45 minutes. Some of this may have been due to puzzles that were really more like quick time events, where the character just keeps dying until the right object is clicked fast enough. One of the reasons that the gameplay experience being so short is very off-putting is that there were indications that there was more to explore and do. For example, there’s a door that is labeled “Seven Door” that never leads to anywhere or serves any role in the game. Why was it included at all? This isn’t to say that point-and-click puzzle solutions always make logical sense, but generally what makes them work is the in-game dialogue from the character. Lacking that made it all seem very random without anything to make it humorous. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2314594886
Audio
There are a couple of notable music tracks. There is a particularly chipper song that seems like it belongs in a jaunty retailer commercial, and the song that plays when ghosts are encountered is nicely on-brand. Sound effects are minimal, but what is there makes sense. There is no voice narration.
Verdict
Despite being cheap ($3.99 at the time of review), I still would say to give Just Take Your Left a pass for those looking for a point-and-click adventure game. While it had no technical performance issues, the game lacks the mental engagement level I’ve come to expect from point-and-click genre puzzles, and there are no achievements, trading cards, or other bonus materials to extend the experience. This game is extremely small and lacks proper dialogues and monologues, but it's very cheap, it is quite funny, it has a great art style, and it is made with love, so that's enough for me to give it a positive review. Keep it up. Till next time, don't forget to point & click!
I super wanted to give this game a positive review, but it's not quite ready for prime time yet. Even though I ultimately felt I had to give this game a thumbs down, please still consider supporting the developer by picking it up, perhaps on sale, especially if it looks like the kind of game you might be into. Just take your left is a very short mouse-driven game by Mehrdad Rezaei, who seems to be a solo Iranian developer. Your character is an agent of some sort who is sent to steal a diamond from a castle, but is antagonized along the way by a small mouse who is determined to stop him. Just Take Your Left is a short game that can be played from start to finish in about 15 minutes. The game uses an autosave system and most of the puzzles in the game involve sierra-style player death; your first playthrough may take up to 30-45 minutes as you work through the puzzles as dying does tend to reset your progress a bit in some cases. The game also has several QTEs with a short window that will kill you if you are not quick enough. The star of the show here is the animations. The game is packed full of hand-drawn antics that evoke the feel of some of the old Tex Avery or Tom and Jerry cartoons. The Steam trailer showcases some of the best of these. I only wish the rest of the game had risen to the quality of the animation. Since it is such a short game, my expectation is that the experience will be polished. Unfortunately, the music doesn't quite fit in some scenes, and in other scenes, the backgrounds feel a tad unfinished. The game's text feels as though it was run through a google translate a few times - it gets the point across, sort of, but the text is full of strange phrasing, odd translations and misplaced punctuation. If I were making a game that I was planning to charge money for, and I were going to release it in a language I was not very familiar with, I would definitely run it by some native speakers for feedback - it feels like that was not done here. It detracts from the game's charm. There are also some bugs. In some cases I managed to create artifact sprites of my player character, and I also accidently broke one puzzle trigger by hitting escape at the wrong time; I had to reload the save to continue. I had a lever that hung around in my inventory even after I put it in the correct slot. Also, oddly, there is no custom text for object interactions. Using the incorrect inventory item on an object has the same effect as clicking that object. If you are willing to overlook some flaws, and are looking for a short, hand-animated point-and-click, this is a decent candidate worth picking up. If some of the issues are addressed in an update, I will likely change this review. However, for the time being, if you are looking for a more polished hand-animated experience, I would point you instead towards TSIOQUE, Luna: The Shadow Dust, Feria D'Arles, or Theropods.
I'm going to begin with saying that this game is DEFINITELY WORTH PLAYING. Not only because of it's MASTER level art and animation, but because overall I think it is worth to spend a few bucks on supporting indie developers like this. Many of the greatest game designers whom work I adore also began with short games like this. On the subject of game itself, I think it is not without issues. Music tracks are not always suitable for the scenes and there can be, from time to time some audio glitches. The narration is acceptable. You can -to some extent- develop a connection between characters but you might have a little problem cursing the game's puzzles. To be honest, I think the game needs a little bit more attention. I'ts free of bug (though you might find one or two along the way) but the experience is not that smooth because of some technical issues. BUT something that really shines in this game is it's Animation and Art. It is fantastic, beautiful and dazzling. Animation is smooth and well drawn and the scenes look marvelous and funny. Especially the scene that has a few ghost character inside of it (funny AF). I definitely RECOMMEND this game and I hope to see more from the developer. Peace

Cutely drawn and animated. The text is basically gibberish, and the puzzles are terribly obscure. Also, very very short--took about 20 minutes for me. So you're paying about $0.25 per minute of play at the $5 price point. Not a great return, that.
Incredibly short game, about 30mins to complete.
Easy trial & error problem solving. The music is annoying and repetitive without separate volume control to the sound effects. Overall I'll give it a thumbs up because of the excellent animation and dry humour.
point-n-click try-not-to-die simulator full of quicktime events. no thank you
I picked this game up because I enjoy playing point and click adventure games, and the fact it had a really interesting art style, was an indie game, and had a few awards drew me to it. After playing and finishing the game (in just 25 minutes, and I had to look up the solution to only one puzzle), I can say the art style is pretty much the only thing this game has to recommend it. I don't know if a lot (or at least some) of the issues are because the dev is Iranian, but in that case, it just really goes to show that trying to find people from other countries willing to help out (and there are a lot out there) for cheap, or even for free would help this case a lot. Okay, the plot. You're Detective Morris, being forced by your boss to go get a diamond from a haunted castle. Is this how police work in Iran, they just... break into places and steal stuff? I mean, there's no mention of a warrant, or why you would go there for actual detective work. Maybe the person t hat stole it left it in an abandoned castle? It really could use some more set up. Also the mouse antagonist is a very odd choice. Why a mouse? Is this another joke that didn't translate well? I'm assuming because you can turn the tables on the mouse in a couple sections, and they didn't want to show you injuring another human... but they never really say why the mouse is there, besides hinting it also wants the diamond. Speaking of which, the translation is bad. Not in a funny way, or even in a 'This doesn't make ANY sense' way but in a very obvious 'This is missing a lot' sort of way. I know humor is very subjective, but I'm not sure what could have been a joke in here, it was mostly just statements. There's also very little text in general, which makes puzzles MUCH harder to solve. Morris going 'hmm' at things isn't helpful, a 'I don't want to break the glass with my gun, I only have one shot' would have been helpful. Of course, where you use the gun doesn't make any sense either. Which brings me to my next problem; the puzzles are VERY nonsensical, and VERY heavy into 'guess what the dev was thinking' territory. Up until some at the end where it's just 'use what you last picked up, it's that linear'.And there's QTEs in the game. One of which made me stuck on a puzzle, because you need to notice a thing in the background for a hint of the puzzle, but you have a quarter second before death. And that' not even a QTE, that's a 'death until you solve it' area. This also causes another issue; there's no saving. There's autosaves the game does, but that means you might get dumped several screens (and a few puzzles) behind where you died. And you can't save right before the QTE, so you need to do the puzzles over and over until you get the QTE right. Lastly, the music REALLY doesn't fit. It's a very short loop that's way more cheerful sounding then I would expect, or want. It could be free music (which is fine) but it does not fit for a haunted castle, even for a comedy haunted castle. Either something slower in a minor key, or just in a minor key in general would have helped. I'm sure there's better free music that would have fit out there, this is just so out of place. All in all, while I wouldn't recommend this game, I would be interested in seeing something by the dev if they made the game longer, and got some other people to help (mainly on translation and writing). I'm not angry, just disappointed.
