Is this game buggy? - Oh yes it is, really buggy Does this game look good? - If you like PS2/GameCube Graphics, yes then it looks fine. How is the animation? - This is the point where I have to say...horrible. Models are floating above the ground and animations are terrible. Voice and sound? - Its fine, nothing groundbreaking but gets the job done. Replayability? - After roughly 60min you are done with the story. Then there is the arcade mode where you run from point a to b and shoot stuff. Couldn't realy play because after the finish line the game won't go back to the menu. Music? - Fits in some parts in some not so much. So with all this critics, why a positive review? - Because the only thing that kept me forcing through this really rough mess was the story and the trippy locations. What will I see next and what the heck is going on? Beside the terrible mechanics the clunky controls, and laughable animations of the human models, RainSoft manged to keep me curious whats happening next. So thumbs up and can't wait for episode 2. Oh...I am sorry to say this, but only get this game on a sale. There is so much things that need to be fixed/optimized and with 60min of story its hardly worth 10 bucks.
Our wild journey as John Lazerus begins with a wild shootout in a nightclub. As an observer, we watch in Bullettime as we escape behind the bar's counter. From there, however, we have to actively intervene in the action and get rid of our attackers to booming dub beats. In the end, we still lie dead in a bathtub, completely destroyed and pumped full of drugs with slit wrists. How did it come to this, what happened to make this happen? We experience John's life from toddler with mysterious abilities to homeless junkie looking for nachos ... John Lazerus Episode 1 Dead Man`s Origin is an insane string of different VR experiences, on par with 2018, that`s how old the game is. That said, by today`s standards the controls are a bit choppy, and unfortunately the game has never been properly patched, so it`s still full of bugs. We move through these surreal worlds either by arm swinging - yes, that was totally hip back then, or, fortunately this patch existed, by free movement. The graphics are surprisingly good for such an old game, but mostly only sufficient, the madness of the storyline distracts well from that. However, you should understand English well, there are no subtitles in other languages. The dubbing and especially the music are again first class. Therefore, John Lazerus is an experience that you should have seen if you like crazy stories and weird worlds. A playable drug trip with demons, underwater cities, aggressive garden gnomes and many other strange things and findings. Coal helps against nasty boobs, for example. Once we have survived the story mode, there is an arcade mode. Here we run through the different levels and can shoot at various enemies from the game. A high score is supposed to provide replayability value. According to the developers, more episodes were to follow, but nothing came in the last few years and the website is also offline. It's a pity that I would have liked to know what John's supernatural powers are all about and who is ultimately to blame for everything. But I guess we will never know. Therefore, there is an informative in the short review and here a thumbs up, because the trip is so good and you can quietly strike in the sale. Fast players need less than an hour. Just what I'm after in VR a horror/puzzle/shooter/story/ corny awesomess personified. A little buggy atm but I'll put up with that for this kind of story, got kind of an Alan Wake, Max Payne kind of feel obviously without the budget of those though. It's corny as hell at the start and a little John Wickish story like, but then the story begins and WTF I can nod or shake my head to answer my mother, who by the way is just enough slutty mum to make her cool. Then I get to go to the bathroom, see myself in the mirror and it's refecting my image and movement, nice touch Devs. Then the real story begins, I haven't been this excited for a small Indie game since forever. It's not for everyone but it is what I've been waiting for. Ok update have now finished episode 1 took about 1.6hrs and it was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome. Highlights
The whole trip, the giant worm, the worms arsehole, the climb, the ending of ep1
Nice work Dev I really like what you've done, can't wait for episode 2.
This was a game that really caught my attention and I had high hopes for. A nice break from a near endless amount of VR wave shooters, and poor excuses for games aka "experiences". Its an oddball world, with different elements, you dont know what to except from one scene to the next. This should have been a breathe of fresh air for me, and if not for the bugs, it would have made an appearance on my personal top 20 VR games. But bugs are lurking around every corner. If the game was in EA I could at least have gone in with my eyes open and just hold out hope they would get patched eventually. And its not like I am trying to summon devs back from the dead on an ancient game, this is a 2018 full release title and my thread on my bugs made nearly a week ago https://steamcommunity.com/app/776040/discussions/1/1696044439574055049/ has gone unanswered. Not even a vague "we will look into it". It pains me to rate it down, as this is the type of game that I would want to encourage. But when the bugs get so bad I cannot progress (character appears to have no controls (ie hands), can pass through solid objects, cannot interact with items or enemies in the world), I feel I should warn others. *My system is more than capable of running the game and my setup doesnt encounter these problems in other games. I made the mistake of giving it time as it was newly released when I purchased it 4 weeks ago, my refund request was denied. Despite game breaking bugs and no support, Steam CS doesnt believe this warrants a refund! *UPDATE* 23Apr After being denied a refund, I tried fiddling with my setup and trying the game again. Honestly I spent more time trying to get this thing to work than I did play it at this point. And somehow things are getting worse :S Last week: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1368444537 Today: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1368444746 Area I cannot get passed isnt even bothering to load in properly at this point! Its coming up to 2 weeks since I posted my problems without any word at all from the devs. Seriously this isnt refund worthy?! *UPDATE* 25Apr Devs reached out. Gave reason for no response as they were on a break. Said they would look into the issues raised.
Played on Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
This is the trippiest VR game yet. In essence, it is a mostly VR cinematic narrative-driven experience. It's also a shooter. It's also a puzzle/escape room game. It's also a melee and throwing coal game (yes, coal). It's also the stuff made of your worst mushroom trip. One of the missions is to get nachos at the convenience store. I kid you not. Spoiler alert:
you end up not getting nachos ... honestly it was the worst part of the game because I really wanted nachos
You do move around your arms to swing and I recommend that for locomotion as this game was just built for that movement. Once you play the game you'll see why you need arm swing locomotion. However, I would definitely change the speed of locomotion in the settings; spoiler alert
the worm boss will be very difficult at the default slow speed setting and he's very easy at max speed
. You can turn on snap turning and I suggest you do if you don't have a full roomscale setup. Lastly, make sure you can pick up items off the ground before playing the game. I really liked this game. But it does have some flaws. First of all, the long loading screens. At one point I thought the game had crashed, but nope it was just a really long loading screen. Second, a lot of the interactions felt very iffy. Climbing up a rope should not be that long and precarious a proposition. I just had to go very slow to make sure I didn't fall, not because of fear of heights but because of fear of losing tracking. There were several graphical issues including frame rate problems at times. The sound mix was really bad. I had a hard time hearing character voicing at time due to the background sounds. That's really sad because the music was amazing in this game. I now have a new passion: reggae music. Playing this game made me think what if Max Payne had been directed by David Lynch inside a VR puzzle horror escape room game during a drug fueled bender. I think you would get this episode of John Lazarus. I think this is a must download just for the unique experience. I just hope the game gets patched up so that it is nicely polished so we can just enjoy the weirdness and not the bugs ... and yeah there's actual bugs in the game that you throw coal at which you make from making a fist with your hands. It'll make sense after you play the game .... Rating 7/10 note: game also has arcade mode, but honestly it's not really worth trying out though .. just go story mode and it took me about 90 minutes to complete (probably should only take 60 minutes if you don't go slow like I did)
Almost to the end of the first episode and I am enjoying it over all. Its a game that can use alot of work on the interface side but I felt it was worth a little work getting use to it. You are thrown into scenes that each are very different. Spacey man real far out. I look forward to what is to come.
Punkte: 7/10
i cannot reccomend as is. Animations feel broken.
