Quick Review
The good: + stetting (1920s Europe) + charming characters (especially the two protagonists) + interesting game mechanic (journal) + gripping story (more than a simple murder plot) The neutral: O Black and White (it’s an artistic choice) The bad: - short (3 h, I wanted more!) - no synchronization - almost no sound (where is the Jazz that was promised?) Conclusion: If you like atmospheric point & click adventure games, you’ll like this one.
Jennifer WIlde is a disappointing game. If you're like me, the graphics are what will hook you, and they're great. But within the first few minutes of gameplay things start unraveling, and in my case I eventually hit a hard crash that made progression impossible, so here's the thumbs down. This game presents itself like a point-and-click adventure, but it doesn't really have the complexity of dialog or any inventory puzzles, so a comparison to Blackwell doesn't fly. It plays more like a minimalist VN where you walk from one location to the next and click through a handful of dialog options to unlock the next location. There is an obscure mechanic where you need to match pictures in your inventory to unlock more dialog options, but it's really unintuitive to determine which picture the developers deemed to be "incomplete" and thus requiring combination because they're all just black-and-white line drawings, so eventually you just have to click everything on everything to progress. In any case, VNs really lean a lot on having great dialog and this doesn't have it. The concept is fine, but it doesn't really make sense how Oscar Wilde fits into it, and nobody has enough dialog to really build a strong character, and then eventually it crashed. I tried reboots, reloads, different video settings, even different video cards, and I could not get past one scene. Hard crash, black screen, the end. If the game was better I might have spent a bit longer trying to figure out how to get past it or restarted from the beginning, but eventually I realized I didn't care. The artwork is nice, but the execution really doesn't cut it.
I initially gave this a negative review due to mistaking a bug for just awkward controls. After completing the game I’m leaning more positive but I’m still rather lukewarm on the game. Ultimately the biggest problem this game has its utterly breakneck pace; scene transitions can be sometimes be utterly jarring and confusing, none of the characters are allowed to breathe so you barely get to know them, and the game’s tale of 1920's supernatural espionage isn’t allowed to shine due to this compression. Really I feel like the game’s stakes should have been smaller. I’m reminded of the Blackwell Legacy, which is of similar length to this game but in that duration Rosa and Joey were so well fleshed out as characters. Jennifer and Oscar Wilde lack that chemistry and camaraderie. Gameplaywise it’s unremarkable; some of the puzzles are awkward like one of the opening puzzles where you just sic the cops on some random schmo just so you can go the lunch and the controls are a bit weird in that to switch between Oscar and Jennifer you have to click and hold on them. It does get better as the game goes along but the gameplay never really stands out. Really the best thing about the game is the art. To conclude, I don’t regret backing this game, but I still really wouldn’t heartily recommend it. It’s just kind of a meh game in a genre where you can do a lot better, like the aforementioned Blackwell series.
Great wee adventure game. Wonderful, unique art style and writing. I would highly recommend.
Lots of suspense and world building packed into a bite-sized story. Some puzzles devolve into randomly trying find the order in which the developers intended me to click things, but how could I not enjoy a game with such a unique concept and art style? Now we have a ghost-detective duo to rival Rosa and Joey from the Blackwell series. I hope they'll be back in the future.
A very enjoyable point and click mystery game. Loved the settings, loved the story, and loved interacting with Oscar Wilde!
Started playing "Jennifer Wilde: Unlikely Revolutionaries" and finished it in 3 hours! This intriguing murder mystery is the interactive version of an Irish comic book series published by Atomic Diner. It features Jennifer Chevalier, a young woman in Paris, faced with sudden tragedy when her father is killed. The shock of this trauma wakes her dormant special powers: she sees dead people. And none other than the ghost of Oscar Wilde is adamant to help her uncover the truth! The beautiful black and white comic book style artwork pulls you into this game, a cool mystery story filled with murder, conspiracy and intrigue keeps you playing, and the gameplay, although there's not much of it, keeps you entertained while trying to figure everything out and reach the conclusion. There are two main parts to this game. First of all, you'll have to switch between Jennifer and Oscar as two playable characters, pretty much in the same way as you play the "Blackwell" adventure game series. Because ghosts tend to gain access to places physical beings can't (or at least not unseen...), and also they often have peculiar influences on their environments which could be used in your favor. Secondly, Jennifer keeps a notebook in which she gathers clues. You'll have to find some items to help you with some puzzles, but the main part is reconstructing events, putting clues together, through the sketches Jennifer makes (oh yes, she's an artist and can draw very realistically) to uncover what actually happened. The story will take you from Paris to London and finally to the great library of Trinity College in Dublin (I went there once, it really is awesome!) You'll spend a lot of time talking to living humans as well as ghosts, piecing everything together so you can figure out what the next course of action should be. There are a couple of tricky puzzles involving tarot cards, electric lights and morse code which you might not immediately figure out. The game isn't voiced since, well, it's essentially still a graphic novel, but luckily you can adjust the speed at which the text changes so anyone who fancies themselves an actor can go "wilde" with the French, British and Irish accents. It's a short game, there's really not much to it, it's more stylistic than a flashy adventure game, but it's good for 3 hours of fun in between some harder games. And it actually made me want to read "The Picture of Dorian Gray" again...
Sides Taken: Keats & Yeats - Yours Wilde - Mine If you're the kind of person who's gone out of your way to read Oscar Wilde at any point in your life just buy the damn game.
