This was an absolute banger, great humour and an absurd storyline for such an unremarkable man. Having to deduct what happened to the victim was a nice touch as well, and showed how well I had been reading. I did have some issues progressing the story. Sometimes, there were little bits of evidence I hadn't found that were preventing the game from continuing. Other than that, this was such a hidden gem
The Shezmu Corporation is not a normal pharmaceutical company. Under their PR-friendly appereance, they’re hiding human experimentation, mind control, bioweapons. They consort with supernatural forces. Paul Shezmu Jr.’s greed and hubris will bring along the apocalypse. There are things science isn’t supposed to touch. There is power man isnt supposed to have.
A surreal detective tale where pies outshine the punchlines
Thanks to the dev for the free copy of Jason Maxx! Before I get into it, I want to be clear though: I didn’t particularly enjoy this one (hence reviewing without chasing all achievements), but that doesn’t make it a bad game. It just didn’t click with me, and I recommend anyone curious give it a shot to form their own opinion. But you can't put neutral / indifferent reviews on Steam though, so I chose “recommended” to support a small indie creator and to see if a potential sequel could be better. On the bright side, Jason Maxx is packed with quirky mysteries and absurd humor, letting you play detective in your own weird way. You actually get to present your own hypothesis at the end with zero pressure, which feels fresh and fun. There’s a variety of characters and plotlines, plenty of pie-related nonsense, and quality-of-life touches like conversation logs, a huge evidence menu, three save slots, and even a recap pointing out what you might’ve missed, which is a thoughtful touch. Unfortunately, most of the jokes fell flat for me, the ending was predictable and somewhat underwhelming, and overall the experience felt forgettable despite the quirky premise. And despite the really funny voice acting tease from the trailer, there’s no voice work in the game itself, which was a real letdown. Without that personality, a lot of the charm deflates. It’s definitely not at Duck Detective: The Secret Salami levels, but still fares better than Frog Detective 1: The Haunted Island. A middle-of-the-road experience: fun ideas, but not all the filling baked through. I honestly did not expect the mystery to be so good for such a short game. Fun to play and writing was hilarious, hoping the devs keep up the good work in the future!
I loved it - I'd say the price is a bit steep for maybe 1-2 hours of gameplay, but it's the funniest game I've played in a while. Can't wait to see more of this from the studio.
10/10 game, fun story and funny dialogue featuring chocolate chip glockies
Nice casual narrative game. Really fun dialogues and surreal happenings. The deduction part was stellar. Shines the most when you check as many interactions as possible
Fun, weird, unexpected. Perfect for a couple of hours chilling, laughing at what strange stuff you are gonna find out and keep surprising yourself up until the very end.
Game's probably about two hours or so if going at a meandering pace. I was playing it with some friends hoping to get a good laugh and we did! It's very funny! The deduction is surprisingly decent for a game mostly focused on its humor. I do like that they give you a stats screen at the end to show you the things you may have missed. If the idea of a overtly satirical police procedural featuring a guy loaded with absurd quips akin to something like Xavier: Renegade Angel and his straight man coworker sounds appealing, maybe give it a try.
The writing and humor is the best part. I wanna see more of the adventures of Mr. Maxx and his sidekick Shaggy. The low polygon art adds to the absurddiness of the plot. Here are some tunings to do here and there, but, an overall blast. I do wanna play it again to see where did I miss the clues and criticize the writer. Very good game for a 2h experience. I hope to see a sequel!
