Perfect to make, break a bond, or learn about CO-LLA-BO-RA-TION!
It Takes Two is the game that introduced me to Hazelight Studios, and I was really thrilled to play it—and eventually finish it. A lot happened in between: I burnt a computer, waited about two years, and finally came back to complete it!
You can play as either May or Cody, a couple going through a pretty rough spot in their marriage and considering divorce. Their only child, Rose, can feel the growing tension between her parents and, as only a child with a pure heart and zero understanding of adult relationships and complex feeling would, assumes somehow it's her fault.
After finding Dr. Hakim's Book of Love, she accidentally transfers her parents' consciousness into two clay dolls. Now, May and Cody have to endure Dr. Hakim's rather questionable lessons while making their way through different areas of their home, learning about CO-LLA-BO-RA-TION and hopefully making amends along the way.
The gameplay is thrilling, but your experience may vary a lot depending on who you play with. It might be easier with some people and a real test of patience with others. Coordination, communication and CO-LLA-BO-RA-TION are key.
At times, the game can also feel surprisingly nostalgic. There are plenty of fun references to discover, beautiful and creative environments to explore, and mysterious achievements to hunt down. If you intend to play it more than once, though, I would recommend switching characters so you can experience the other side of the puzzles and keep things fresh.
With It Takes Two, Hazelight Studios created a bright, imaginative game with a great storyline, exciting gameplay, incredible environments, and, most importantly, a lot of heart. It's specially memorable for those of us who love a rich story wrapped inside a genuinely fun experience that we can share with someone we care about.
Is it a perfect game? No. But I do think it's a must-play, especially if you enjoy co-op games. It has its flaws, and some parts might test your patience more than others, but the overall experience is so creative and memorable that it's absolutely worth playing at least once.
