It Sleeps Below the Haar

Sadly i can't recommend this game. Great potential to build something up, and nothing at the end. Devs need to understand how cosmic horror works, you can't just throw tidbits of bread crumbs and expect everything to work out in the end. Also jesus christ why is the game crashing thrice under 2 hours. Spoilers ahead, if they even can be deemed spoilers, I'd love for this game to have a "Day 1..." mechanic where it's getting more hectic day by day, and to have side quests (Optionals as the game states) every day that provides the character with something more to protect their insanity more & to also build other characters further. This would add to disappointing sleep cycles after the first one, where in the first you have the opportunity of going through a beautiful map with promising backstory, only to be followed up with "Fetch that" quests (Singular) per one sleep cycle, forcing you to loop a back&forth running cycle. You're not really "uncovering" what really sleeps below the Haar. If i didn't get the story, add me as a friend and explain please cause i have no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ clue. Also come on. You really showed us a cool, very scary skeleton of a penumbrified whale and did not think of a jumpscare or just a visual of that in an underwater segment? Please.

If you're into cosmic horror, the doric language and exploring a really interesting landscape full of intriguing landmarks and unique characters then absolutely give this game a go!! It Sleeps Below the Haar is a really interesting setting, a really intriguing premise and really wonderful writing!! It's absolutely a labour of love, and the care put into the project really shows through. I'm only a short way into the game and I can already confidently recommend it, I'm absolutely hooked, highly recommend!! Also the dev is absolutely lovely and she's super responsive to bug reports and very involved with community stuff. So another reason to give a very cool indie game a go! :) If you like this I also highly recommend the devs previous game which I think is only on itch, it's called The Black Iris and it's another interesting short cosmic horror game! :)

After finishing The Black Iris, I was really hoping for something that fit the similar needs that it did. This game does that and gives so much more; it makes every usage of being in the form of a game that it can. It does an extremely good job of inserting the player into the shoes of the research student, from the manual of how the local people speak to the open areas of land that the player can explore. Talking to the local people also really elevate the feeling of the setting, their dialogue and the reasons they're there are really interesting to read. On that note, the hints and bits of history left for the player to find around are so great, I love how things are explained and mentioned enough so that you can still be curious and speculate what is going on. Again, mentioning the atmosphere and art direction: the usage of the grain and dream-like sequences are so perfect for the setting and atmosphere. It's super awesome to see how this story is told and the ways taken to tell that story. I don't want to spoil the entire game, but it was really good at doing what it set out to do. Overall, this game is totally worth the money in my opinion. The atmosphere is perfect. I can't wait to see more from the developer.

I.S.B.T.H. slowly became an obsession of mine, as it incorporates two genres I absolutely love; PS1 retro vibes and cosmic horror. Explore a small village on the outskirts of Scotland and find out what hides behind the mist. I haven't finished it yet, albeit it's short run time, not because I don't like it, but, because for some strange reason, I don't want it to be finished. The great atmosphere and weirdness I expect from Arboreta. The map was bigger than I expected and there are a few side objectives you can choose to complete or not. Many mysteries to uncover on this foggy Scottish coast and you are the scientist tasked with it. Also if you like this game I would recommend their first game "The Black Iris". Not on Steam but Itch.

So interesting and atmospheric, in a wonderfully unsettling setting.
