ISOLAND4: The Anchor of Memory is a thoughtfully crafted point-and-click adventure that continues Cotton Game’s distinctive approach to surreal storytelling and cerebral puzzle design. As a later entry in the ISOLAND series, it does not attempt to reintroduce itself in conventional ways, instead confidently immersing players in a strange, fragmented world where meaning is uncovered through observation, experimentation, and reflection. The game feels less like a traditional narrative journey and more like wandering through a series of interconnected ideas, each space acting as a vessel for memory, symbolism, and quiet philosophical inquiry. The experience unfolds through first-person exploration of a variety of evocative locations that range from intimate interior spaces to abstract and otherworldly environments. These areas are linked together in ways that often feel dreamlike rather than logical, reinforcing the sense that the player is moving through layers of memory rather than physical geography. Houses, laboratories, forests, temples, and cosmic settings coexist without clear boundaries, and this lack of conventional structure becomes one of the game’s defining strengths. Rather than guiding the player along a fixed narrative path, ISOLAND4 encourages slow exploration and contemplation, allowing each environment to tell its own story through visual details and interactive elements. Puzzles are the central focus of the game and are designed to challenge both logical reasoning and lateral thinking. They draw heavily on environmental clues, requiring players to pay close attention to patterns, symbols, numbers, and subtle visual changes. Some puzzles are immediately approachable, offering satisfying “aha” moments through careful observation, while others are more opaque and demand experimentation or revisiting earlier areas with new understanding. This uneven difficulty curve can be demanding, but it aligns with the game’s overall philosophy of treating players as active participants rather than passive recipients of solutions. Narratively, ISOLAND4 is deliberately ambiguous. Dialogue is sparse and often cryptic, delivered through brief encounters with strange characters who speak in riddles or philosophical fragments. These exchanges rarely explain events directly, instead hinting at themes of memory, identity, time, and existence. The game draws inspiration from literature, art, and science, weaving references into its world without explicit explanation. As a result, the story feels interpretive rather than definitive, inviting players to construct their own understanding of what they experience rather than offering clear answers. The visual presentation plays a major role in sustaining this atmosphere. Cotton Game’s hand-drawn art style is immediately recognizable, blending simplicity with expressive composition. Each scene is carefully framed, filled with details that feel purposeful even when their function is not immediately clear. The use of color, lighting, and texture helps guide attention while maintaining a cohesive, dreamlike tone. The visuals are not designed to impress through realism, but through mood and symbolism, which suits the game’s introspective nature. Sound design and music are understated but effective, reinforcing the sense of solitude and introspection that defines the experience. Ambient sounds and gentle musical cues enhance immersion without dictating emotional responses. In the absence of voice acting or heavy exposition, audio and visuals work together to carry the emotional weight of the game, allowing moments of silence to feel meaningful rather than empty. One of the more intriguing aspects of ISOLAND4 is its approach to replayability. A second playthrough introduces subtle changes to puzzles, dialogue, and environmental details, encouraging players to revisit the game with a deeper understanding of its mechanics and themes. This layered structure reinforces the concept of memory as something that evolves when revisited, and it rewards attentive players with new perspectives rather than simply repeating the same content. ISOLAND4: The Anchor of Memory is not designed to appeal to everyone. Its abstract narrative, challenging puzzles, and refusal to provide clear guidance may frustrate players who prefer straightforward storytelling or constant direction. However, for those who enjoy atmospheric adventures that prioritize thought, interpretation, and artistic expression, it offers a deeply engaging experience. It stands as a confident continuation of the ISOLAND series and a strong example of how indie games can use minimalism and ambiguity to create something emotionally resonant and intellectually stimulating. Rating: 7/10
乏善可陳,互動物件之間的關聯性薄弱,解謎仰賴窮舉 角色都在講一些人生哲學之類的屁話,沒有實質劇情
This is the most non-linear entry in the series so far, and I really enjoyed that change. There’s no notepad this time, but the quick scene-travel system makes moving around much more convenient!
