***AN UPDATE IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS REVIEW*** "IOUA: The Forest" is an experimental puzzle game in the style of an abandoned RPGMaker story. The gameplay mostly consists of travelling from room to room, with each puzzle increasing in obscurity and difficulty. However, IOUA makes a fatal flaw in it's design when constructing these puzzles, as you're given little to no help or information in terms of actually understanding the puzzle or beating it. To the point that it only serves to actively annoy and irritate any player attempting to traverse it. This is not an overexaggeration, I challenge anybody doubtful to this fact to progress to the end of the game. I assure you, you will not make it. This is fairly interesting to me, as someone who grew up on RPGMaker games and playthroughs. There were many games that were very vague and only loosely guided the player on their journey. In this way it almost comes off as a self aware ode to this era of games, and one that I would like to appreciate, if I could simply see more of it. The Developer, "JACK!" uploaded a guide which has since been permenantly removed from youtube. While they seemed adamant on helping players complete the game at first, they have since entirely stopped and will likely block you if you attempt to make contact with them, which is what happened to me and my friends when we tried to do so. The unfortunate part about this is that IOUA is not only an interesting concept, but a fairly well executed one on an aesthetic level. The visuals perfectly execute it's premise, the music is droning and haunting, and each room gets more unsettling than the last with escalating horrors. Every component of this game, other than the puzzles themselves and Developer support, is excellent for a first try at developing a game, and I genuinely hope to see more from JACK! as they show great promise. As for this project however, steer clear. You will gain nothing other than headaches from playing this game, and The Developer is completely uninterested in ensuring players will actually get to see the culmination of their hard work. It's incredibly sad that apparent love and passion went into a project with a secret ending that nobody will ever see. Should JACK! reach out to me, respond to the discussion board posts begging for help, or reupload the guide, then I will be more than happy to change my thoughts on the game. For now however, stay far far away from this project. It simply isn't worth your time. UPDATE: Since this review was written, the Developer has began supporting the game again and reuploaded the guide. Apparently it was due to their channel getting taken down which is out of their control and understandable. Furthermore, a second chapter to the story is being teased and the game will hopefully see some improvement in it's new content. Again, I think this game is a very solid attempt for a first try and could be genuinely great if it's simply more playable. I think riffing off of a poorly designed RPG Maker game as a concept is very interesting, but difficult to pull off without just making another poorly designed RPG Maker game. JACK! chose a difficult concept as their first try and I think that by itself is a commendable effort. I wish nothing but the best for the next chapter of IOUA.
Before I played IOUA, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
Really makes you think
Unutulmuş RPGMaker bulmacalarının çarpık kalıntılarında geçen sonsuz bir işkence oyunu.

I feel so disheartened, because I love the concept of this game, but without much (if any, at times) guidance in game and the removal of the developer's guide this game has become next to, if not, impossible to finish which also makes it next, if not, impossible to recommend. 2/10 I want to update this review since the developer remade a [https://youtu.be/MRiCLzCBPhM?si=DzV1QkqhbYGCG3bd] YouTube guide . It is impossible still to beat the game's convoluted puzzles without it, but I appreciate the effort to create the guide and possible future game updates to make the game (more) playable.
RPG Maker strikes again! "IOUA" is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. Notably, the "developer" couldn't work out how to use RPG Maker to make a JRPG (the only thing it can do, and it's terrible at it). Instead, we have an "I'm thirteen and meta is clever" plot around this RPG Maker asset flip being the product of a bunch of other RPG Maker asset flips, and you have to do 2D adventuring and solve puzzles while reading, yes, you guessed it, the high school anime club dropout fan-fiction cringefest of writing that makes up this RPG Maker asset puke. At least it's not about the developers imaginary anime girlfriend. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers. The game is really simple and unambitious in terms of implementation, more of a tech demo or one of those cases where an amateur developer spends $100 to publish something on Steam Direct to see if it's possible. Yes, obviously it's possible. A proof of concept, tech demo, or something that's less than a little blip on the radar isn't offering anything truly valuable to gamers. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
Throws you into a bunch of puzzles for which there are no clues and you're on your own. Not for me.
this game has no real way to solve the answers
