This was a fun game that's good but not great. But I honestly think that's fine as not every game needs to be (or can be) exceptional. I enjoyed my time with it and it's very competently made and I'd be happy if more games like this game came out between the heavy hitters.
Quick first impressions review: surprisingly well polished! Feels very professional. The movement and combat feel excellent. The homage to Castlevania is immediate and earnest. I'm looking forward to more.
I don't know JHT Games' mom, but I bet she's a wonderful lady if the Boy is willing to go through all of this for his own mother. --------------- This is just a preliminary review since I'm only about an hour and a half in, but I gotta say, I like this game. The handcrafted sprites and animations, the smooth combat (though it's a LITTLE unclear where hitboxes end and begin at times and it takes a little bit of getting used to), and the level design being built with just a dash of intended sequence breaks, it all works very well. This is turning out to be a fun, colorful and very well-made metroidvania. I think in terms of inspiration, it vibes like Hollow Knight more than anything else. I'm finding myself instinctively pogoing off of basically everything I can touch, and there's a few places where it's clear that if I was just a little more perfect I would get somewhere that maybe I'm not supposed to be but that would have a little reward if I got there. Each screen has your abilities firmly baked into them, and while I can't say I'm a fan of all the "crush you and put you back at the start of the section" traps in the first area, it's VERY forgiving with where it places you, again somewhat like how Hollow Knight knows you're gonna fail at stuff. I don't feel like I'm getting my balls smashed in a vice when I play, but it's also not exactly a cakewalk. First boss took me a couple tries to get down. I'm also playing with the Portuguese voice acting, and I really love the little self-aware lines that the characters have; I also pray for a day when my years of fencing come in handy. I knew I liked this game when Boy started complaining that he doesn't have the double-jump that most metroidvania characters get. I think maybe I'd call a game like this "handcrafted". Like, it's clearly for a very specific laser-targeted group of people who are at the cross section of loving passion projects, can forgive some minor flaws here and there in level design, and hate themselves enough to start a no-hammer run of Rabi-Ribi but care about themselves enough to not go through the CBT experience of finishing it. All told, pretty good at a glance! I hope it stays this good as I play.
This is a good metroidvania. It doesn't really do anything special or new (at least so far I've played, there's really no ground breaking mechanics yet). But, it is a solid game. The boss fights are tough, especially when you don't have platforming abilities like a double jump and dash/air dash. Once you get those (and you get them fairly quickly. I've only played it for a couple of hours) the game becomes slightly easier. Combat is not deep. Its just mash one button. You do pogo jump of enemies though if you can continuously hit them. Not really a big fan of the art style (I guess its ok) but one thing that surprised me was the game actually had voice lines (lol even though I skip them). The game sticks to its roots and just does what a metroidvania should do. Overall, its a solid 6.5/10
