This feels more like a classic Picross done right, in the manual sense, since you get to cross off every cell in a finished row/column yourself, no lazy auto-fill. A bit like in the puzzle books irl. Which I dig for that authentic feel... but man, a toggle for chill sessions would've been so nice on days when I feel like a lazy potato. And with no hint button, it also means if you’re stuck, you’re stuck until you see it, if you see it. It’s again one of those things I don’t mind that badly, but also at the same time kind of miss.
Overall, the puzzles are fun, but up to a certain size. When they get too big, it becomes really messy, and the side numbers are harder and harder to see. So, out of curiosity, I tried the 100x100 one, and no matter how much I zoom in, I can’t make out any of the numbers. So, I guess that’s going to be one I’ll be laying aside along with the other bigger ones. And yes, I sniffed around a bit in settings, but I didn’t really see anything that could help me with this, unless I completely overlooked it, of course. The ones that were enjoyable to me, often up to 30x30 or lower, were cool when you completed them, and they revealed the image. A small detail I appreciated and enjoyed.
But, I think this one shines the most in the (endless?) puzzle generator- which is the random button on the main menu, not to be confused with the editor, to be honest, rather than the over-the-top pre-made grids. You can stick to a size that feels most comfortable to see, with or without zooming in, which makes it so much more chill.
As mentioned above, there is also an editor where you can add your own picture and turn it into a Picross. Although I do have to admit that neither mode has a tutorial or an explanation. A little bit of a shame since I didn’t understand everything. Like the advanced button, for example, in the random generator. I saw a weird string of letters, maybe a code to share with a friend so they have the same puzzle? Like a seed? And under that a zero. But yeah, no clue what either is really for.
Another thing I absolutely thought was cool was that we could customise our theme. It’s such a silly detail, but such a good one. It just feels good not to be stuck with a certain colour palette and to be able to tailor it completely to your visual taste. And the music is pretty chill. Kinda nice you can mute it directly with one button if you wish.
So I’m very 50/50 on this one; it’s a bit of a fixer-upper, but it does have a few good things, and despite that, I gave a thumbs up because I don’t see enough reason to downvote it. I would say this is meant more as a neutral review. Truth be told, I’ve had better picrosses but I’ve also played way worse ones than this one.
So, it boils down to whether you find an editor and generator worth it if you’re considering this game.
An enjoyable size VS I really can’t read those numbers and it won’t zoom in more.
