The primarily reason one would want to play this genre of games is the puzzles, so let's quickly cover everything else to get them out of the way so we can focus on the puzzles. The graphics are a little above average for an indie game, though nothing spectacular. The environments are interesting, although a little on the noisy side which can make it difficult to tell when something is supposed to be interactable versus just decoration. The music is sufficient for the job, but nothing remarkable. The story is about average for this genre, a backdrop provided to barely provide motivation, but generally not worth paying attention to. Again, none of this is all that important, and a game can still be range anywhere from terrible to fantastic despite all of the above, depending on the puzzles. Unfortunately, In The Space Escape Room (ITSER)'s puzzle design is often very lacking. A lot of the puzzles involve giving you some visual cue (often just somes numbers), and then asking you to guess the answer, which is itself a sequence of numbers. For example, you might be given the clue "3827" and now your job is to guess the answer, which is itself a four digit number. There simply isn't enough information to figure out the answer. There's lots of different four digit numbers you could derive from 3827, for example 5535, or 5753, or 1946, and so on, and they are all reasonable, with no indication of why one transformation might be preferred over another. And so a lot of these "puzzles" are just trying the standard set of number-transformations that frequently get used in puzzle games, and seeing which one the developer happened to use for this particular puzzle. "Are they doing the thing where you look at
the number of letters in the English spelling of the number
? No? Okay, are they doing the thing where you look at
how many straight lines are needed to write the number down using a standard LED style font
? Are they doing the thing where each number represents a
day of the week and I have to translate the the English spelling of that day of the week
?" ITSER also reuses the same types of puzzles repeatedly, which feels like it's just padding out content. For example, there are multiple copies of the "sliding 15 tiles" puzzle; there are multiple copies of the "rotate titles to form a path" puzzle; and there are multiple copies of the "lights off" puzzle. The puzzles don't gradually get more difficult or have any variants thrown into them or anything. Once you've solved one of them, it feels tedious to solve another instance of them. (And in fact, these puzzles tend to be so overused in puzzle games that even the first time you encounter them in a game, there's already a sense of tedium). The "lights off" puzzles in particular, seemed to be designed in a very lazy way: Many of the switches that you can toggle don't affect any of the other switches, and so getting all the switches into the on position is often very trivial. There are also a couple of logic puzzles, like "Alice likes apples. The person who likes bananas is not Bob. Charlie is to the left of the person with the cat. etc.". However, they also seemed to have been poorly designed, often allowing for multiple solutions. Unfortunately, the game only accepts one of those solutions, so you'll sometimes find yourself devising a solution which the game simply does not accept, and you simply have to try to find a different solution that also satisfies all the statements provided in the puzzle. The one puzzle that stood out to me as well designed was the one where a girl had to grab a knife and get to the exit without being spotted. There are plenty of "find a path satisfying a constraint" puzzles out there (see, for example, The Witness), but this was the only one present in ITSER, and so it felt "fresh" in comparison to the other puzzles that the game made you play through. It was also one of the few puzzles that you could solve completely on paper independently of the game, and be confident that your solution was correct before entering the solution into the game (in contrast to those "Guess what transformation I'm applying to these numbers" puzzles). Overall, I found this game more frustrating than entertaining. If you're a fan of the genre, I would recommend instead looking at The Room series of games.
So far pretty fun puzzles, some repetition though but usually with harder difficulty. Seems like a pretty good deal on sale. solid 7.5/10 Gameplay https://youtu.be/TGizuAHev4k
Follow "First Person Exploration and Puzzle Games" for more games like this!
A single-player escape room game with some surprisingly good puzzles, brought down by a lot of lazy puzzles and a few broken ones. If this game looks familiar, that's because it's made using an "escape room toolkit" purchasable on the Unity store, and used by a lot of other Steam games (the best of which are created by mc2games). As mentioned, this game does have some great puzzles. Unfortunately, most of them are neutral to bad. • The worst example is the "digits" puzzles towards the beginning, which has literally no correct solution. The developer missed an important detail (the flat edge of some of the pieces) in their own puzzle. • Another puzzle (the "diagonal numbers" puzzle towards the end of the game) is extremely underspecified, to the point that I think you need to be clairvoyant to solve it without using a hint. • There are also several puzzles with multiple valid solutions. A logic puzzle involving shirt/pants colors has FOUR valid solutions; the puzzle involving a medicine bottle and a "beaker" (which is just a plasic cup, lol) has probably ten solutions; and the puzzle involving phases of the moon has at least four reasonable solutions. For all of these, only one of the valid solutions is "correct", and the only to know which one is by trying them all. For the moon puzzle in particular, the "correct" solution is the least reasonable one, to the point that the puzzle is just stupid. Solving it opens an empty cabinet (???) In addition to the above issues, there are a LOT of lazy puzzles: • Three puzzles are the same moving tiles puzzle • Two puzzles have lights that blink in a certain order, with buttons in front of them that you need to press in the same order • Four instances of "click one of these things that need to rotate, and multiple things rotate" • Three instances of "here are some equations involving things, figure out what number each thing represents" • Four very similar logic puzzles of "order the things" (two have multiple solutions and are mentioned above) • A LOT of puzzles where the answer is straight up printed in one place, and you just need to remember it and input it in another place, with no actual puzzle. If they removed the lazy and broken puzzles, I think this would be a great game. But it would also last about 20 minutes instead of 3.5 hours. Overall there are too many better options out there to give this one a thumbs up. [Edit] I just discovered that two of the puzzles in this game are exactly the same as puzzles in an earlier game by another developer that uses the same "escape room" toolkit, Sotano. Not just the same riddle, but the same models, textures, UI, everything. While it's possible it's stolen, I think it's more likely these puzzles come with the toolkit and were just lazily included in both games as-is. Either way, that's another mark against this game.
Poorly designed puzzles, often the puzzles are too easy (shows answer on 2 screens, asks you to enter it) or they are layered behind incomplete logic. There were puzzles that appeared to not have enough info or even an incorrect solution even looking at the intended solution after the fact as well as a lot of puzzles that require strange assumptions to guess the answers they were intending. The puzzles were often so vague that I ended up trying a few theories as shots in the dark since I got the gist of what to do but it was ambiguous as to which way the intended interpretation was. There is also way too much repetition, such as the "flip all switches down" puzzle which was used over 5 times at least. A lot of the puzzles were also poorly designed, which very minimal steps required for the final solution. The graphics as well are clearly trying to copy the look and style of a game by "mc2games" even using some of the same assets, sounds, and GUIs. however it feels more like a prototype version of it as all the textures are flat and can be hard to spot what is and isn't a puzzle. puzzle elements also seem arbitrarily spread around the room. for example you solve one puzzle and it plays a cut-scene of a paper coming out of a wall on the other side of the room, often taking a min to find where and what just opened. Several texture and sound bugs found. If you're looking for an escape room style game like this, I'd recommend any of "mc2games" escape rooms over this clone.
